The world has lost another Apollo era legend. Ken Mattingly, the Apollo 16 and Shuttle astronaut left us on October 31. Ken’s contributions to the field of spaceflight were nothing short of extraordinary. Our most sincere condolences go out to his friends and family.

JAN 29: #OnThisDay in 1955, Neil Armstrong graduated from Purdue University with a Bachelors of Science in Aeronautical Engineering. Armstrong was on a naval scholarship at the school and had paused his education several years, serving in the Korean War.

SEPT 14: It was #OnThisDay in 2012 when Neil Armstrong was laid to rest off the coast of the North Atlantic Ocean. Armstrong, a veteran of the U.S. Navy, was cremated and his ashes were scattered off of the USS Philippine Sea.

Congratulations to retired US Air Force Colonel Buzz Aldrin. The 93-year-old will receive an honorary appointment to the position of Brigadier General on May 5th at Los Angeles Air Force Base. Aldrin graduated 3rd in his class at West Point in 1951 and served in the Korean War.

Today marks the 120th anniversary of the Wright Brothers first successful flight! Dayton natives Wilbur and Orville Wright conducted the first successful tests of their motor-powered airplane. The first flight itself lasted 12 secs, flying 120 ft at a speed of 6.8 mph.

Today would have been Judith Resnik’s 75th birthday. Born #OnThisDay in 1949 in Akron, OH, Resnik broke barriers in 1984 aboard STS-41-D as America’s second female and first Jewish-American in space. Though she left us too soon, her legacy as an astronaut and engineer lives on.

SEPT 14: It was #OnThisDay in 2012 that Neil Armstrong received a private burial at sea service off the USS Philippine Sea in the Atlantic Ocean. Earlier, Armstrong’s family had been offered a state funeral, but declined, citing Armstrong’s humble and modest nature.

It was #OnThisDay in 1921 that astronaut & US Senator John Glenn was born in Cambridge, Ohio. Glenn made history on both of his space missions. The first in 1962 aboard Friendship 7 as the first American to orbit Earth & again in 1998 as the oldest person in orbit at age 77.

It has been 60 years since losing President Kennedy on that tragic day in Dallas. Kennedy was one of the biggest driving forces for our space effort to land humans on the Moon. Simply put, without John F. Kennedy, our museum would likely not exist. We remember him today.

DEC 4: #OnThisDay in 1965, Jim Lovell and Frank Borman lifted off aboard Gemini VII. The mission lasted nearly 14 days and conducted the first inflight rendezvous with another craft. The mission remained the longest crewed spaceflight in US history until Skylab 2 in 1973.

SEPT 3: #OnThisDay in 1951, 21-year-old Neil Armstrong was forced to eject from his F9F-Panther after having 6 ft of his right wing get clipped off by enemy cable line. Armstrong flew back into friendly territory & ejected over Pohang Airfield, where he landed in a rice paddy.

FEBRUARY 20: #OnThisDay in 1962, Ohioan John Glenn became the first American to orbit Earth aboard his Friendship 7 Mercury spacecraft. Glenn made 3 orbits before splashing down in the Atlantic Ocean. The mission lasted a total of 4 hrs and 55 mins.

This #FeatureFriday we highlight this work done by artist Pat Rawlings. The piece was commissioned in 2004 when Neil Armstrong was awarded the National Space Trophy. After a year on display with @SpaceCenterHou , the work was given to Armstrong who then donated it to our museum.

Today marks the 45th anniversary of Armstrong’s record-setting Learjet 28 flights! On February 19-20, 1979, Armstrong set five aviation world records, mainly near Kitty Hawk, NC. Today, this record-setting jet is on public outdoor display at the Armstrong Air & Space Museum.

DEC 27: #OnThisDay in 1968, the crew of Apollo 8 safely splashed down in the Pacific Ocean after becoming the first humans to orbit the Moon. For their heroic efforts on the mission, the crew was named as @TIME ’s “Men of the Year” for 1968.

SEPT 26: #OnThisDay in 1960, Neil Armstrong piloted the F5D Skylancer for the first time, taking off from @NASAAmes in California. Today, only two Skylancers are left in existence, with the one at the Armstrong Air & Space Museum the only one that Armstrong flew.

It’s Halloween, which also means we have a famous birthday! #OnThisDay in 1930, Apollo 11 astronaut Michael Collins was born in Rome, Italy. Collins was chosen in NASA’s third astronaut class in 1963 and served on both the Gemini X and Apollo 11 missions.

“Okay, Houston, we’ve had a problem here.” #OnThisDay in 1970, Apollo 13 experienced a serious malfunction mid-flight when a service module oxygen tank exploded. @NASA spent the next days finding solutions for battery usage, carbon dioxide removal, and water consumption.
