Eh, the variance of single-gene trait is high so selection gives a big win; the variance of a trait with 1000+ genes is low so almost always all your embryos are going to be near the average. Flip a coin 1000 times and you get close to 500 heads.

The chilling effect of fuzzy boundaries is a good point. The more important point is that it allows you to selectively persecute the outgroup while being lenient to similar misdemeanours from ideologically aligned members of the in-group. It allows for discretionary enforcement.
