Why is French fertility comparatively high (TFR = 1.84)? The large number of migrants? No. Even though 1 in 5 births in 2017 were to immigrant mothers (143,000 out of 760,000), this barely raises the TFR by 0.1. It's mainly because fertility among native-born women is high.

@AporiaMagazine Eh, the variance of single-gene trait is high so selection gives a big win; the variance of a trait with 1000+ genes is low so almost always all your embryos are going to be near the average. Flip a coin 1000 times and you get close to 500 heads.

The chilling effect of fuzzy boundaries is a good point. The more important point is that it allows you to selectively persecute the outgroup while being lenient to similar misdemeanours from ideologically aligned members of the in-group. It allows for discretionary enforcement.
