It was amazing to present the synthesis of my work with @uramakri and @BarbaraMable1 at the #SMBEsmallpops at Princeton. Since most species face bottlenecks and small populations are prone to extinctions, I ask how so many species are found in nature? @NCBS_Bangalore @UofG_SBOHVM

@NCBS_Bangalore @WWFINDIA @WCT_India @BiodivCollab @WCSIndia @BLiSC_India This tiger inherited identical copies of a mutant gene from both its parents. This led to the broadening of the black stripes. This and other unusual conditions can arise if the parents are related. Such situations arise in small isolated populations often for example, Similipal.

@NCBS_Bangalore @uramakri @WCT_India @BiodivCollab @WCSIndia @WWFINDIA @BLiSC_India Tigers are top predators in an ecosystem. The presence of tigers in a forest means the presence of their wide variety of prey species which in turn indicates the presence of a wide variety of plant species and other small animals. Thus tigers symbolise a healthy ecosystem.

@NCBS_Bangalore @BLiSC_India @TIFRScience If we maintain the tiger populations we have currently the population will increase. We need to make sure the habitats are connected and ecological information is considered while developing infrastructure for human use. Then, eventually we will have a healthy tiger population.

We show that though geneflow from both natural dispersal or translocation from captivity can increase heterozygosity and reduce inbreeding, the individuals born out of translocation have higher deleterious allele loads.
