I just found out my residency program schedules primary care appointments for interns during orientation week to establish care. Is this a common thing?? Or am I just like the luckiest human ever to have matched at

Starting my M4 gratitude project! Before graduating, I want to let everyone that had an impact on me during med school know how important they are to me & how I wouldnt be here without them. Planning letters for everyone from security to faculty

If you were/are an applicant using social media as part of your process for deciding what residency programs to apply to, what things are you looking for? What would you like to know about programs?

Med students from small/new medical schools, from underserved backgrounds, applying to competitive specialities, or with "red flags" on their applications have relied on away rotations to show their skills to programs.
I know it was important for my application as an MS4.
I agree, but can’t minimize the importance of understanding the background/communities of your patients in these hospitals. They’re not just there to teach us. Centuries of racist policies have created these disparities & it’s on us to recognize that too.
If you are a med student considering where you next wish to train, I'd suggest a tough, inner-city, low-income hospital. You will see much more, and do much more, than if you choose some swank, country-club like place.

Find yourself a chair of surgery that knows your dietary restrictions and makes sure you have safe, labeled options at the holiday party. Thank you Dr. Tseng!!

As a queer woman of South Asian descent living w/ chronic illnesses, the "House of Surgery" didnt always seem like a welcoming place. Grateful to my mentors,

I may be a surgical resident but I’m also a patient with Celiac Disease. Thank you

19 (!!) years ago I was diagnosed with Celiac Disease. My Celiaciversary is a day that I always take to reflect on my journey as a patient and a physician.
And what better way to celebrate than with a

I’ve been seeing some misconceptions about

and

on social media and I just wanted to take a moment to dispel a big myth.
If you have a celiac, and are appropriately following the gluten free diet. You are NOT immunocompromised.
Ugh my family is the BEST. They sent balloons and a teddy bear to the hospital as an early birthday present. It’s the little things that make such a difference 💜

Spending the day today with a long white coat on, being called doctor (even just for a shadowing day) felt like a dream come true. I have a long way left to go but today felt like a huge step 😱 Wish me luck for the official start of intern year on Monday!

Am I the only one having a tough time in this transition between med school and residency? I see lots of talk about excitement & some nervousness but I’m feeling pretty sad about moving away from my family, partner and friends. Anyone else?
Our paper was just published in

Gender disparities during the transition into practice of newly trained surgeons: Are female surgeons left behind?
I had a GREAT day today in the OR with an amazing surgeon who was such a fantastic teacher.
But it got me thinking- are there programs out there that have courses to teach attendings how to teach effectively?

If you’re in academia and you’re not reading through the

hashtag, you need to get over there ASAP.
Our Black colleagues are sharing what people in our institutions put them through EVERY DAY. Please be open minded, listen, and learn.
I’m sorry what…? I don’t know or really care what the intention of this slide was but in my opinion these kinds of thoughts don’t have a place in the future (or present) of surgery. How disappointing

So please tell me more about how medicine has changed when a president of a whole surgical society chose this as his hill to die on… let me go find some bootstraps to pick up

and my co-fellow Emily Nes. Thank you for all of the support and guidance in this first year of research!
Only my mom could do a podcast all about poop 💩Check it out for answers to all the questions you were too embarrassed to ask your doctors!
And yes, growing up we did talk about poop at the dinner table 😂

You know you’re not white when everyone at the coffee shop gets their order called out by their name.
And I get a minute of looking at the printed label on the drink and a “iced latte?”

Spending a post-call afternoon in the kitchen 😍
Nothing like calling my grandma to ask for a recipe and for her to give me the “little of this - little of that” kind of recipe. Hope it turns out half as good as hers!
Finishing up my last week of nights for this rotation at the VA with the greatest crew! We put in a-lines AND make plans for dismantling systemic racism 👏🏽

Happy Thanksgiving! Especially to everyone who also spent the day with patients instead of being home with family and friends. I know it was tough for me to be away from family today but I’m thankful for

family who made it a little better 😊

I think if you’re passionate about helping an underserved population, you should go there and you will learn a lot. But if it’s not where your heart lies, please don’t send overly privileged doctors to learn medicine from a community that they won’t try to understand
Food allergy/celiac friends: anyone else really struggle with understanding what is happening to their body sometimes?? My stomach is KILLING me and I’m like- is it gluten? Is it one of the nuts that im allergic to but don’t have an anaphylactic reaction to?? WHAT IS HAPPENING

My newest superstition is that if I take my scrub cap off before the end of the shift, I'll immediately get called for a trauma. It's basically my own personal Q word and now even the intern working with me won't let me take it off 😂
It is rare to find a level of vulnerability in medical providers like what I just heard in this podcast. Thank you

Today is my 17th Celiaciversary!
Most people probably don’t celebrate the day they were diagnosed with a disease but for me, celiac changed everything. I decided to go into medicine, got involved in research and patient advocacy all because of a diagnosis when I was 12!
I have the best seniors EVER. Today when they realized I was getting late for a flight, they jumped in and started placing orders and literally kicking me out the door so I could get to the airport.

Today is my last day on clinical rotations as a medical student and I am on a complete rollercoaster of emotions. Excited and sad that it’s over, anxious for what’s to come, and feeling quite a bit of nostalgia

To people who did dedicated research years in residency: What are the best skills you learned during that time? And what are the skills you wish you had taken the time to cultivate?
I’m doing some personal goal setting and am looking for ideas!

Happy Diwali to all!
I’m so thankful to be on my research years so I can come home and celebrate with my family. Look at these beautiful thalis my dad put together!!! 🪔 🎉
Good luck to everyone entering
#ERAS2020
cycle! It’s an exciting & scary time so just remember one thing.
You deserve to be here.
You’ve worked hard. You’re going to meet a lot of impressive people on the interview trail but YOU BELONG just as much as they do. Go rock it!
I think it simply breaks down a barrier to networking that happens in real life. There’s no hierarchy on social media. Im not afraid to tweet at an attending or the chair of a department if I have something to contribute to a conversation! Just be authentic 😊
