Tomorrow I’ll vote thinking of recent interviews. Suicidal kids who can’t get on a camhs waiting list. Hungry kids with no beds. 16 yr olds in care alone in travelodges. I’ll think of heads who cried on phone as they can’t fix this. Or keep staff. And Ofsted may crush them anyway

No one knows more about how brave you have to be to close your door on Ofsted than @FloraSCooper . If Oliver doesn’t offer “real action” she says “he will have heads who will either resign or stand together in solidarity to try to make change happen.”

40 MPs and peers call on Huddersfield uni to close its masters course in Bahrain, following evidence that prisoners are being tortured in the same building. This was a painful and shocking story to write.

This made me shout into my kids’ pancakes this am. No one has debated anything for a year due to restrictions. Students are paying thousands for accommodation they can’t use. They want to talk rebates. But suddenly free speech is the most pressing issue?

Inadequate to outstanding in four months! Well done to this early years provider for disputing another Ofsted single word judgement that was clearly utterly spurious. How many careers - lives - are ended for no reason?

On Jan 10, 2024, two senior HMIs from the EY team re-inspected the (0-3) settings, following a disputed inspection of the same settings in Sept 2023. The report from this re-inspection states that the provision is Outstanding. Read the full statement -

A few thoughts in response to anger from some quarters about my piece on crackdowns on absence today. No one is saying schools shouldn’t visit home (in fact one tragedy is many cash-strapped schools I talk to are having to cut family liaison workers when they need them most.)

Ofsted bows to pressure and halts inspections. Big news with big questions. Halting until all inspectors have done the token 90 min session on stress? Or until there is the total culture shift that is needed?

Revealed: UK govt keeping files on education critics. But if they wanted to silence these women they are failing…”Discovering they have been monitoring me makes me fucking furious..They should know I will speak up like this until I am dead,” says one.

As we wait to hear if Braverman will go, worth revisiting my story of a lecturer at a top UK uni who lived in a tent for 2 yrs as she couldn't afford rent. It was cold. She showered secretly at uni. It wasn't a lifestyle choice.

When I first wrote about the brutal emotional toll Ofsted was taking on heads, following Ruth Perry’s death, Ofsted tried a similar line on us, saying journalists like me were pushing teachers to edge with “negative” stories. Wake up! It’s not the exposure that is the problem.

Look! Women get a free apron with every reform vote. Very revealing on their desire to have all mums staying at home and wearing those twirly 1950s dresses and smiling more at their husbands. FFS.

Schools in England face years of chaos as government stalls on Raac concrete repairs. Consultants close to DfE say response “a shambles” and schools being fobbed off. Surveyors warning waiting schools not to expect anything to happen before 2026.

Amazing Tees Valley Education trust does “deep social listening” to understand how poverty impacts many of its families. Like the mum with raw hands from handwashing uniforms. A home with five jobs but no washing machine.⁦ Schools are now the frontline.

The brilliant Jonny Uttley on the families doing their best to survive poverty with no post covid catch up for their kids & collapsed services. Equally shocking is fact that he is even having to make point that hungry, impoverished children should be at heart of election.

This was such a poignant story to write. The UK unis connecting every week with bombed unis fighting to survive in Ukraine. They call the UK amidst sirens, with staff and students dispersed across Europe. It’s heartbreaking. But it’s also about hope.

Raging that Jeremy Hunt talked about not “cancelling” Hester today. Like it’s a tiny storm in a woke teacup. Like the big issue is Hester’s freedom to speak his nasty racism &fantasise about shooting female MPs. Never miss a chance to stoke the narrative.

Someone argued that the pregnant 14 yr old girl in piece is proof she needs to be in school. I agree she is manifestly unsafe out of school. But point is mum knew she was being exploited &fought for help & there was none. Prosecuting mum doesn’t fix core problem.
