I’m surprised that there isn’t more coverage of the stark difference between Canada and the US on Covid19. With about 10 times the population US has 32 times the number of deaths. Is this because our governments acted more quickly? Because we have better health care? Big story.

It’s hard to escape the feeling that Canada’s place in the world is much diminished. No more energy leverage with USA, no seat on UN SC since 2000, a pathetic response to pandemic as we pull back vaccines from the charity bin. Economy will lag recovery of others by months. Blame?

I'm perplexed. Canada is facing issues boarding on crises in health care, housing and inflation. We have a minority govt which most CNDs despise. Yet Jagmeet Singh checks out as an influencer on these policy issue in exchange for a promise on dental care which will never happen.

Alberta has decided to move on transgender issues in schools including notification to and consent from parents on pronoun changes. On this issue, our Canada wide polling from several months ago shows massive support for notification and about half of parents with kids in school

Canada doing much better than US & UK on Covid death rates. For that we can thank the provincial health authorities who closed/ open and CNDs who generally complied. The Feds really only had 2 jobs - control border and get vaccines. They have failed at both.

The worst experience I've ever had with the fed govt happened today at Vancouver passport office. There were 100+ people waiting for processing but only five of the 20 positions were actually occupied by passport officers. Were the rest working from home?

CBC “ at issue” is so Ontario centric it lacks any credibility as a national show. The major analysts rarely even discuss the vast area to the west and when they do it is with little credibility. This show has become a symbol of a tired broadcaster that has lost its way.

PCR testing is OTT for vaccinated CNDs returning to Canada. My son, his wife and two kids had to pay $1500 C$ to get tested. More than cost of flight. Plus finding test centres in US is increasingly difficult. This needs to change. Now!

What our survey on Keystone really shows is the disdain Quebecers feel towards pipelines. Obviously we should have an energy east corridor to compliment the TMX thru BC. Very sad that the Feds lack the authority and/or courage to make it happen. A real threat to national unity!

The feelings in the West are part of what psychologists call the “frustration-Aggression” complex. Most people in CDN still driving cars (even in Quebec), were buying a lot of Saudi oil yet no outlet for our own product. Can’t really blame folks for being angry and bewildered.

The biggest responsibility for the tragedy of residential schools rests with the federal government. They enacted the laws, underfunded schools, & refused to return deceased children. The churches provided cheap labour. Some bad people for sure. But this was the Feds program!

This makes me sad. Just as Quebec is shutting down bilingualism, Trudeau with support from other parties is amping it up. The requirement that every member of supreme court be completely bilingual disenfranchises most lawyers in English Canada.

Why $2000? I understand the need to tamp down international travel given COVID variants. But many snowbirds who went south are seniors who live in trailers in places like Florida. Ok - have them quarantine for 3 days but for many $2000 is a huge burden. Super 8 is $70 per night.

Where is CND strategic policy? For vaccines we rely on the goodwill of suppliers elsewhere. On oil and gas which are critical to home heating and autos we rely on pipelines through hostile territory like Michigan. No energy east, no vaccines. We can’t seem to get our act together

Russia sends about 2.5 MM brls of oil to Europe each day. Global consumption is about 100 MM brls. Russia oil exports can be cut if the rest of the world uses less and production is increased. Canada should step up. Short term : Oil may do more to save the world than destroy it.

In 1967 when PET came to power Quebec was 29% of population and the West 27%. Now the West is 32% and Quebec 23%. There is a big power shift working it’s way to the surface of Canadian politics. Wake up Ottawa!

The point is simply that part of the problem in Canada is very limited hospital capacity. We score badly on most global measures. Health care is the number one issue for CNDs over 50. Yet many continue to believe the myth of our superior “system”.

We need random sample testing in Canada and big samples in individual provinces to establish the real rate of covid 19 infection.Without this we are flying in fog.The published incidence is meaningless. Until we know the denominator, epidemiological forecasts are of little value.

About 2/3 of CNDs believe that increasing acceptance of Transgender is a sign of social progress. Yet a majority of these want to know about pronoun changes for their children. The attempt by some politicians to label these people as anti Trans is simply wrong.

My own POV? The criminalization of decent CNDs who travel is regrettable. Many are seniors with homes/ trailers in US sun belt & who are now vaccinated & whose return poses no threat. Others are dealing with family issues in far off lands. Get them tested but don’t detest them.

Nothing in my last post is meant to imply an anti- French bias. It’s just that our pool of potential national govt leaders is relatively small because of the bilingual requirement. 90% of lawyers in English Canada aren’t bilingual and have no chance to ever be appointed to SCOC.

The issues being raised by premiers in Alberta and Saskatchewan aren’t just rhetoric. Household level job anxiety is highest in both provinces. Ironically, Quebec, one the the big recipients of equalization, has the lowest level of job anxiety. Trudeau needs to listen and act.

Some advice for Mark Carney. I was a pollster for the ill fated John Turner campaign - 40 years ago. Turner lost, in large part, because he failed to put distance between himself and PET. Joining JTs cabinet will insure Carney’s defeat if he eventually becomes Liberal leader.

I don’t doubt that Moreau will be a great Justice in Canada’s Supreme Court. But there is no justice in the policy which now requires that all members be fluently bilingual. This disenfranchises over 90% of lawyers and judges in western Canada. Unfair!

Canada has the largest Ukrainian heritage population in the world outside of Russia. 1.3 million. Yet our level of hard military assistance seems quite puny. 100 anti tank launchers and associated rockets. Earlier we sent a plane load of machine guns and rifles. Not enough!!

Somewhat unsettling to watch Trudeau’s newsy last week where he dismissed the vaccine shipment problems. US has received 4x the vaccine per capita as CND and in coming weeks the gap will grow. This is a disaster.
