This is a really good question, I wish more people would engage.
How to build a self sustaining city on Mars? That's quite a puzzle! A good warm up program is this variant instead. Given one large container ship (24000 TEU) filled with anything you want, it is beached in Reykjavik harbor, at which point all of Iceland is subjected to an indefinite blockade. Your mission is to maintain a modern tech stack and quality of life for all ~350,000 Icelanders for as long as possible. What do you pack? While tough, solving this problem indefinitely is far easier than on Mars, where there is no breathable air, no grass, sheep, or fish to eat. On Iceland, a technology regression may stabilize at medieval quality of life, since that was present for about 1000 years until modern times. On Mars, a technology regression leads to swift and certain death.
