I recently sat next to Christian Wakeford MP at a dinner in the East India Club. He proudly told me that he won due to the support of 95%+ of his town's large Jewish population, who hated the thought of a Socialist government. I wonder how they feel about his double standards.
I was canvassing in a working class part of "my" ward last night. The sense of anger and betrayal over Brexit was overwhelming. Not just directed at government, but all politicians. "You b*strards have stolen our dreams." 1/2
Kenneth Carke has stood and lost the
#Conservatives
leadership three times:
1997: 44%
2001: 39%
2005: 19%
But now wishes to replace Boris Johnson (elected with 66%) and overturn the votes of the 52%.
When will these people realise; they are the problem, not the solution!
Seeing people who campaigned alongside me to get Boris elected leader just 2 years ago now turning on him is a sad reflection on loyalty. Thatcher and Blair hit poll ratings sub 30% and recovered.
The scale of his 2019 victory has surely given him the right to try and recover.
And it's over.
#Conservatives
hold all three seats in Labour's second target East Wickham, a ward they won 2:1 in the Sidcup parliamentary by election.
Conservatives have HELD London Borough of Bexley!
🥳
If you are a Labour troll flooding social media claiming to be a "lifelong Tory ex para won over by Corbyn's manifesto" at least have the brains to delete your pro Corbyn tweets from 2017!
I'm getting a little bored with LibDems claiming their "success" is reflective of a "mass anti Brexit movement". The reality is they polled 19% (7% lower than 2010). In a perfect storm when many hard Brexiteers abstained and every Remainer could protest, they still came THIRD!
As one of Britain's longest serving Agents with 9 Gen Elections and over 2,000 local elections under my belt, I know a thing or two about winning (and losing). And I know a winning leader when I see one
That's why I have just voted for
@trussliz
#ConservativeLeadershipContest
Today
@DanielJHannan
and
@sayedzbukhari
hosted an important meeting of parliamentarians from North America, Europe, Africa & Asia with
@ImranKhanPTI
. They were joined by leaders of prominent think tanks, special advisers and analysts. I was honoured to be invited to join.
I am backing
@BorisJohnson
to bring home the 8 million
#Conservatives
who didn't vote Conservative on Thursday 23 May, to deliver Brexit, reunite our country and defeat Jeremy Corbyn.
#BackBoris
As of tonight:
Biden/Harris 75,677,793 (51.5%)
Trump/Pence 71,264,360 (48.5%)
Delighted to see so many UK Remainers celebrating Biden's 'decisive' victory.
🤔
Yes. Facing your local activists who have stood by you through thick and thin, raised money to pay your expenses, tramped the streets to get you elected only to be betrayed by you when your sense of self importance became greater than your sense of loyalty. That must be bleak.
On the day
@DominicRaab
resigned I wrote an article which concluded, "next they will come for
@SuellaBraverman
, then they will come for Brexit."
I didn't expect to be proved right quite so soon.
"No-one should travel more than 20 minutes to a testing station" says
@Keir_Starmer
Has he ever left North London? It takes me longer than that to drive from one end of my council ward to the other. In that one sentence he has confirmed his limited appeal and outside the M25.
The public have made great sacrifices to make lockdown work. They deserve to be part of an adult conversation about what comes next.
We are engaging constructively to protect our country and, to that end, I offer a series of considerations for the Prime Minister in my letter.
Renowned broadcaster and journalist
@IainDale
says Penny Mordaunt "ticks all the boxes" and is uniquely qualified to unite our country and end the psychodrama.
I couldn't agree more.

One chap in his 50s shook hands and smiled when I told him the role I had played in Vote Leave. Then said, "the trouble is fella if I vote for you, the chances are you'll turn out like the rest of them and let us down too."
For what it's worth, I add my name to this letter in today's Sunday Telegraph, signed by the entire leadership team of the voluntary party, calling on all sections of the Party (especially MPs) to unite behind
@trussliz
and the government.
ONE extra Conservative vote in each ballot box across the West Midlands would have won it for Andy Street. Just ONE.
Next time a
@Conservatives
Councillor or activist says "GOTV doesn't matter" tell them they are wrong
Not without thought and with no malice to any other candidate, I have decided to back
@PennyMordaunt
We are fortunate to have so many outstanding candidates, but for me the ability to reassure our traditional base while having the ability to reach beyond it, is absolutely vital.
I am very sorry for many good
@Conservatives
councillors who will lose their seats today, through no fault of their own.
We must not blame the opposition parties, they are as entitled to success as we are. Nor must we blame the voters. We only have ourselves to blame...
It is a travesty of justice that this man now sits in the House of Lords after his niw proven lies and smears destroyed many lives. Thinking today of Leon Brittan, Lord Bramall and their surviving families and, of course,
@KHarveyProctor
.
His 'elevation' is a stain on
@labour
When media want me comment on a 'scandal' they phone twice an hour and set immediate timelines.
When I am telling a positive story such as local charity distributing 1000s of gifts to nurses/carers, they don't respond to call/email (2 days now).
Sadly indicative of priorities
At 32 Carrie is old enough & intelligent enough to make informed choices. She also had the courage to testify against John Worboys and waive her anonymity to campaign against his early release. Real courage comes from what you do, not what you type from the safety of a keyboard.
On this day in 1990, Margaret Thatcher left Downing Street for the last time.
Brought down by pygmies, traitors and feeble men, with more ambition than talent.
Never defeated by the people.
She was, and remains, better than every single one of them.

"I first understood service when I stood at Portsmouth Harbour with my parents and saw the ships set sail for the Falklands. Witnessing that, alongside Mrs Thatcher's resolve, made it clear the need for our country to stand up to bullies."
I am delighted that
@BegumNadiya
has been recognised in the New Year Honours. She might bake great cakes, but this woman has done more to promote tolerance than 100 government quangos. Well deserved Nadiya 😁
Losing hurts.
But Conservatives blaming Reform or their supporters for our defeat is the arrogance that got us into this mess.
As
@PennyMordaunt
said, "democracy is never wrong".
We are in this mess as WE did not give conservatives a reason to vote for the Conservative Party.
If Labour lose Hartlepool tonight it will be down to the simple fact that they still see politics as something done TO people, not empowered and driven BY people.
Hi
@bbcnews
Watching 'Days That Shook The BBC'..when you reported William Rees-Mogg's role as Governor you referenced he was
@Jacob_Rees_Mogg
's father. But when you spoke of Alasdair Milne's 'independence' as DG, there was no mention of him being father of Seumas Milne. Strange!
I've worked alongside
@tracey_crouch
for over 10 years. I chaired the panel that selected her, then as her Campaign Director and now as her constituency Chairman. I am immensley proud of what she did today. To resign from your 'dream job' on a point of principle takes courage.
I want to say a huge TY to the NHS, the British military and the government for building the Nightingale Hospitals. I don't give two hoots that they haven't been used. In fact I REJOICE that they haven't. Would the critics prefer them full of sick and dying people? Grow up.
Those
#Conservatives
members who feel like that should have stood up and been counted when they were needed. It was a pretty lonely place defending
@trussliz
in those last 48 hours when most of your parliamentary colleagues were too busy plotting or hiding under their desks.
Talked to Conservative members yesterday about the Autumn Statement. Some were stunned and some angry about the tax rises. Many critical of wasteful public spending. They want a stronger growth strategy.
I have been
@cmackinlay
's friend for almost 20 years, and his election agent at every election he has fought as a Conservative (bar one!)
He is a man of unmatched political principle and personal courage. I will be proudly his side again this time.
Bring it on!
What a ghastly and racist post. I might not agree with their politics, but every one of these men were born here. They are as British as I am. Shame on you.
We lost this election far more than others 'won' it.
For the second time in this cycle (2019 and 2023) out of touch leadership in Westminster has undermined our local efforts. Under Theresa May we had the worst result in a generation. Under Sunak, it's just got worse.
I would just like to pay tribute to the men from the Queen’s Company First Battalion Grenadier Guards, who were Her Majesty's pallbearers.
What a tremedous physical (and emotional) burden, with their every move in the global spotlight.
Well done chaps. Outstanding service
On Wednesday 16 April 1997, John Major made the following appeal to his party and country. What a tragedy he now seems so wiĺling to bind Boris Johnson's hands in his negotiations with Europe.
Politics is about change. You don't quit. You stay and you fight for the outcomes you want. The conservative movement does not belong to one party or one leader. It belongs to us all. The leader is a temporary custodian. The party is the vehicle.
I am so proud to be backing
@PennyMordaunt
Despite the lies and bullying of angry men, she and her team have remained respectful and dignified throughout.
No tit-for-tat.
No blue-on-blue.
It's time to restore dignity and honour to politics.
It's time for change.

Earlier today a friend (a Kent County Councillor) kindly praised my work in the community during the crisis. This attracted a comment from someone who has never met me. "Is this being paid for from the £10,000 extra for office expenses?"
On the very day Natalie Elphicke defected, her latest MP newsletter was landing on the doormats of Dover via Royal Mail Door to Door.
Headlines include🫣:
"Rishi's plan is working. Let's stick with it."
And...
"Labour will take us back to square one."
😀😀😀
Poll after poll puts
@PennyMordaunt
ahead.
AHEAD in the Red Wall
AHEAD in the membership
AHEAD against Keir Starmer
AHEAD of Labour
If you are a party member in a

I am starting to see posts along the lines.... "if [insert name] wins, I am resigning.
Please don't.
This party belongs to you as much as them. They are just the temporary custodians.
Battles are won by those who turn up to the fight. Walk away and you are out of the game.
I am desperately sad that
@trussliz
has resigned, but who can blame her? I have absolutely no regrets backing her. Given the chance, she could have made an outstanding PM. But we must now unite, and I believe only
@PennyMordaunt
can do that.
Congratulations to
@RishiSunak
and his team. Whether we like it or not, he won fair and square. I appreciate many will be hugely disappointed, but remember the alternative is Keir Starmer.
As leader of the
#conservatives
and Prime Minister he deserves our support.
Reading people laughing and celebrating the fact Barnier has Coronavirus is repulsive. I don't like, support or believe in anything he stands for. But laughing at someone for catching a disease that could end up killing him is truly appalling.
Those of us who fought Labour's Liverpool Militant Tendency in the late 1980s are well aware of Frank Field's amazing courage and personal dignity. My 2015 blog post pays tribute tobthis truly remarkable man.

Yes, we need more and better people, but the angry mob, indignation by proxy, factual inaccuracy and arrogant and self-righteous inability to admit error are some on the reasons good people refuse to enter public life. And that is a tragedy.
Every day when I deliver her meal a delightful old lady in Blue Bell Hill gives me "two bob" (10p for you youngsters) and tells me to "buy something nice for my wife".
I now have £6.20 which is enough to buy a bottle of hand sanitiser.
All I now need is a wife.
Just NO
@Conservatives
NO!
This morning tens of thousands of us woke-up physically and emotionally exhausted. 100s of MPs (many personal friends) and 1,000+ staffers have lost their jobs. We have a Labour government. Many of us have a Labour MP, in the case of my constituency
Most of last year I managed to cope quite well and remain positive, but I have found the last few days really hard. I feel the light at the end of the tunnel has dimmed, though not gone out. This is tough but I still have health and a husband who loves me. I am luckier than many.
I look forward to the 1000s of angry twitterati who piled into
@BorisJohnson
or
@RobertJenrick
now joining me in praising
#Lewes
MP
@mariacaulfield
for returning to the frontline in nursing. Or perhaps that won't sit comfortably with their aggressive narrative.
Thank you , Maria
I have always considered myself an Agnost, but tonight I am praying. I don't know who to or why, but I am praying for the continued health of my husband, my family, my friends, for humanity. For our PM. For whoever is inside every speeding ambulance and for those as afraid as me.
I am sorry
@AngelaRayner
but neither you nor the Labour Party have a monopoly on poverty. I grew up in abject poverty with my chronically sick mum in a Liverpool council flat. Your class based gaslighting is vulgar and undermines you.
Now I am not one to rub salt in Labour's wounds, but if the Gravesham Westcourt result were to be repeated at a GE,
#Labour
would be down to 63 seats. EVERY Labour MP in a Leave voting constituency take note. You will not be forgiven if you block Brexit.
I am "grateful" to the resident of
#ditton
#kent
who accepted my leaflet, looked at the photo, looked back at me, and said, "lockdown hasn't treated you well, has it?"
Many friends and colleagues have asked if I am tempted to vote Reform.
As Vote Leave's regional organiser, and an unavowed Thatcherite, I can see the temptation and I understand why many are considering doing so.
But it would be a massive error.
Like most other councillors, I received an email yesterday from Cllr James Giles from Kingston-upon-Thames, inviting me to sign his open letter calling for a ceasefire in Gaza.
Two points.
"Councillors afraid of the reaction of colleagues can sign annonymously."
BUT...
for the first time in 100 years.
And what is the first email we receive? Another begging letter asking us to "chip in".
"Chip in" so the people responsible for this disaster can keep going.
This total lack of emotional intelligence is why so many are comtemptuous of CCHQ.
A short personal tribute to Tracey Crouch MP, who has announced today that she will not be standing at the next election.
She has been an outstanding MP and many (of all parties) will miss her.
It has been a tremendous privilege to have been part of
@PennyMordaunt
's campaign team, and worked alongside some truly amazing people. This time it was not to be.
Good luck to
@RishiSunak
and
@trussliz
.
Last week
@PaulBrandITV
did a podcast with
@tracey_crouch
during which she said her favourite meal after chemotherapy was chicken pie. To celebrate her final chemo and to say "thank you" for being an amazing MP, I made her a chicken pie, complete with Mungo & Basil decoration 🥳
Delighted for my friend and colleague (and fellow Boris Johnson Regional Organiser),
@gregsmith_uk
on his selection in Buckingham. It will be great for this town to have a
#Conservatives
MP again. Goodbye Bercow. CON GAIN.
Having been disenfranchised over the election of
@RishiSunak
#Conservatives
members should have a vote for the new Party Chairman. Two names put forward along with "none of the above". We could have an online hustings followed by electronic ballot. A step toward democracy!
The Reform Party have sent an email to every Conservative Councillor in the UK seeking defections. A number of colleagues have asked if I am considering defecting. The answer is simple. No I am not.
Under FPTP there is no room and no hope for another party on the right.
I first wore a badge reading "Set Britain Free from the EEC" at CPC in 1984, 35 years ago! I have been campaigning to leave longer than Farage. I led Vote Leave in Kent. My plea to friends and colleagues
