It’s that time of year again!
The sound of European bee eaters can be heard day and night from my bedroom window.
This small noisy flock landed above my balcony this evening and showed incredibly well, feasting on bees and hornets!👌🏼
After several years of trying without success, finally managed to catch up with the elusive wintering Wallcreeper! 💥
The bird preformed well for half an hour, spending most it’s time feeding upside down

Just found this smart Desert wheatear on the beach @ Mandria + 3 Isabelline, 3 Northern wheatear, Yellow wagtail, 20+ Red throated pipit and 2 Black redstart.

Some bad weather this morning put down this flock of 7 migrating Demoiselle’s, always a great sight to see, especially in spring!

Autumn mission to find a Crested Honey buzzard complete ✅
This dark morph male circled over us at Lady’s mile, a stunning bird that really did stick out like a sore thumb. 2nd record for Cyprus!

The Red fronted serins at Kouris dam put on an amazing performance, showing down to a mere 10meters. Stunning little things and nice to now see them in adult plumage!

It’s been another fantastic year exploring Cyprus, many highlights and spectacles observed.

This Asian desert warbler popped up next to the car today at Cape Greco. An unexpected yet welcome lifer, a smart little bird.

An unfamiliar call had me looking up to find this smart White tailed lapwing dropping in @ Akrotiri marsh + Little Crake, 3 Tem stint and Pallid swift.
Nearby, 53 Turtle dove feeding together alongside 70+ Yellow wag and 3 Short toed lark and 32 Bee eaters over.

Thankfully, yesterdays stunning sum plumaged male Caspian plover hung around, a VERY welcomed lifer !

2023 Eleanoras falcon survey complete ✔️
357 adults across 4 colony’s.
Witnessed a Common Redstart escape within an inch of its life but a Willow warbler and 4 migrating Spanish sparrows weren’t so lucky.
Also a dead quail noted in a nest.

Despite inseparable plumage, 3 birds were being fed, constantly calling, begging and chasing so I have no doubt they bred and fledged young this year!
Would be the first successful breeding of this species in Cyprus!

Caught up with the Bar tailed lark today, alongside the female Menetries warbler, many years since I’ve had 2 lifers in a day!
The lark performed superbly, too close for optics most of the time, a very smart bird.

Highlights: Seeing 300 Turtle dove in an hour and watching a Bonellis eagle hunt a White stork.

Despite seeing thousands each spring and autumn in Cyprus, this morning I finally caught up with my UK bogey bird: European Bee eater. Long overdue! 😂🫣
3 birds still present, courting the female with some visits to a potential new nest hole.
Today I watched a Long eared owl eating a European bee eater...not something I thought I would ever witness 🤯 (That trumped the 21 Golden Orioles, 28 Turtle dove and Eleonora’s falcon that I saw just before the owl).
Over 100 Eleanoras falcon at one colony this morning during surveys + Peregrine, 3 Honey buzzard and 30 Shag.
Nearby; 200+ Honey, 2 Long legged and a single Steppe buzzard, 1 Levants and 5 Eurasian Sparrowhawk, 10+ Red foots and 1500+ Bee eater all out to sea.

Paphos forest is vast and very under watched.
A Humes warbler outside my accommodation (2nd Cy record) was a real treat, what else is hiding in the forest?! 👀

18 Barn swallow Larnaca sewage works… a sign of things on the move + 8 Little gull.
65 Black necked grebes nearby at Larnaca salt lake + 16 Black winged stilt and at least 10 Slender billed gull.

Very quiet around Paphos, it seems migration has paused for now but caught up with 2 male Finsch’s wheatear and found 2 day roosting Cyprus scops owls.

Brief look @ Akrotiri marsh late PM produced some nice birds.
12 Blue cheeked bee eaters showed well as did 2 Baillons and 2 Little Crakes and 2 Great snipe gave a brief fly around.

Grey headed woodpecker was a welcome lifer
+ Goosander (50+), White tailed eagle, Rough legged buzzard, Black, Middle spotted, Great spotted, Green and Syrian woodpeckers, Dipper (3), Great grey shrike (8) and Hawfinch (6)… not bad!
Sometimes putting in the effort pays off 💥
An hour spent scrutinising a large mixed flock of finches came up trumps in the form of a Red fronted Serin, a welcome lifer!
