Unlike humans, virtually all animals are incapable of conscious malice, which is the thr moral justification to meet cruelty with cruelty. Even if you want to take a religious argument, we may have dominion over thr Earth, but we're also supposed to be good stewards of it. Even if you don't think the beetle has any emotional awareness of suffering, the fact is people torture animals due to some aspect of cruelty in their nature. Maybe she overreacted, but she's also not wrong to find someone enjoying an animals suffering disgusting.
