This Earth Day 🌎 we'd like to remind you that the technology and infrastructure to move millions of people with low to no emissions already exists. It's literally not rocket science.
CSX says that running 2 daily Amtrak trains on the Gulf Coast would impair freight service on “a very busy corridor.” 😳 So we set up a livestream in Bay St. Louis, MS to see if the route is as busy as CSX claims.
Count along with us on Twitch!👇
🚄🎉 Ridership soared over the past year with over 28MM passengers in FY 2023! 📈 Our journey towards a new era of rail continues with expanded services and infrastructure investments nationwide
Thank you to our dedicated employees and federal, state, and host railroad partners!
🚨CSX and NS are fighting to block Amtrak service restoration in the Gulf Coast🚨
You heard that right. The same freight railroad companies that block roads with 3-mile-long trains want veto power over passenger rail expansion.
How did we get here and what's at stake? 🧵
When frequent and reliable passenger rail service is available, people choose to take the train.
Yet some of our fastest-growing communities don't have that option. That's why we're working with states and
@USDOT
to deliver our first major passenger rail expansion in 50+ years!
"The state of Ohio is “strongly considering” applying for federal dollars that could lead to expanded passenger rail service throughout the state, including the establishment of a new route connecting Cleveland, Columbus, Dayton and Cincinnati."
Want to learn more about our plan to improve passenger rail service, reduce carbon emissions, and connect America's largest and fastest-growing communities?

We have exciting news coming out of Ohio!
@GovMikeDeWine
has raised his hand 🙋 to learn more about our plan to bring more trains to Cleveland, Columbus, Dayton, and Cincinnati via the 3C+D corridor.
The governor has asked the Ohio Rail Development Commission to work with Amtrak “to determine the feasibility and cost” of several routes identified by Amtrak in a massive expansion proposal.
Yesterday, we streamed CSX's "very busy" tracks outside of Bay St. Louis, MS, and counted 4 trains from 8 AM to 5 PM. Their spokesperson didn't like that we focused "on one point of a line."😔
So here's a timelapse from last week! Different point. Different time. So not busy.🤠
CSX continues to claim that their track is just too busy to accommodate two (2) round-trip passenger trains on the
#SoNotBusy
Gulf Coast. We took another look (and we’re not the only ones with the receipts). 🧵
More Amtrak Airo trainsets are on the way! Amtrak has ordered 10 additional trainsets (83 total) as demand for passenger rail travel exceeds expectations. Debuting in 2026, these modern American-made trains will serve routes throughout the country!
@EdwardTMorris
Enhanced service generally means more round trips! For example, the Cascades Corridor would go from 4 to 13 round trips between Seattle-Portland and the Pacific Surfliner would expand from 13 to 33 RTs between San Diego-LA.
It also includes shorter trip times and extensions!
Let's get the facts straight:
1. Amtrak has the right to access any US rail line.
This was put into law 50 years ago when Congress created Amtrak to relieve freight railroads of their obligation to provide passenger service.
Gulf Coast service is NOT an exception.
Amtrak is one step closer to a new, modern Long Distance fleet!
ICYMI: Amtrak recently issued a formal Request for Proposals for new Long Distance trains, which will transform the customer experience and meet growing Long Distance ridership.

The Hudson Tunnel is one step closer to getting built, thanks to $6.88B in CIG funding- the largest federal transit investment in US history!
We applaud the Biden Administration,
@SenSchumer
, and Congress for their commitment to investing in America's infrastructure.
2. Twice-a-day Amtrak service would not 'unreasonably impair' Gulf Coast freight service.
The route is far from its capacity. CSX ran ~11 trains per day there in 2017. That's a far cry from the 2,000 trains Amtrak dispatches on the Northeast Corridor. Every. Single. Day.
3. The Gulf Coast has been loud and clear: they want their trains back!
They've passed resolutions, testified before Congress, and turned out for an inspection train traveling east to Mobile for the first time since '05. They even brought a marching band!
🧵 The
@USDOTFRA
has awarded Amtrak nearly $10 billion to modernize the Northeast Corridor! This historic funding will support 12 Amtrak-led major infrastructure projects through the FRA’s Federal-State Partnership for Intercity Passenger Rail Program. 🚆🎉
The Gulf Coast has been w/o Amtrak service since Hurricane Katrina devastated the region in '05.
Tomorrow, the Surface Transportation Board will consider restoring New Orleans to Mobile service, after 16 years of bad faith efforts by CSX & NS to keep communities disconnected.
🚄 In case you missed our Twitch stream, we rode with
@LouisianaGov
from Baton Rouge to New Orleans on a KCS inspection train.
He says he wants Amtrak service between the two cities as soon as possible. We agree and will work together to make it happen!
📈 Colorado's population increased by 15% since 2010, at twice the national rate!
With a forecasted 35% population growth by 2045, we're proposing more Amtrak service for the Front Range to create new transportation choices, cut carbon emissions, and get cars off our roads.
Today we celebrated the Frederick Douglass Tunnel project kick off with
@POTUS
and
@USDOT
in Baltimore.
Now we're ready to work with
@mtamaryland
,
@MDOTNews
, and
@NABTU
to replace the 150-year old B&P Tunnel, improve service speed and capacity, and create 30,000 jobs! 🚆👷🇺🇸
More trains for more Ohioans! 🚆👨👩👧
We look forward to working with
@GovMikeDeWine
and the Ohio Rail Development Commission as they apply to the
@USDOTFRA
’s Corridor ID Program to study new Amtrak service in the Buckeye State.
🚧 Amtrak has selected Kiewit/J.F. Shea Joint Venture to build the brand new Frederick Douglass Tunnel!
This puts us one step closer to replacing the existing 150 y/o B&P Tunnel and unlocking the biggest passenger rail bottleneck south of New Jersey.
Welcome to Day 1 of the Gulf Coast STB hearing! 🥳
After 3 traffic studies and 7 years of failed negotiations, enough is enough. CSX has yet to prove that restoring twice-a-day Amtrak service in the Gulf Coast would 'unreasonably impair' freight service.
@SecretaryPete
is right! Americans deserve more from their passenger rail system. The Corridor ID Program puts us on the path to modernizing our network and reconnecting America. 🚄
⏱ CSX and NS say it’s “standard practice” to demand half a billion dollars in taxpayer dollars for Gulf Coast Amtrak service without looking at even a single minute of schedule changes.
Make it make sense! 😵💫
5. CSX & NS are demanding $440M to allow twice-a-day Amtrak service between New Orleans and Mobile, far beyond estimates by the Congressionally-established Gulf Coast Working Group.
Unsurprisingly, CSX & NS refuse to share how they got that figure.
Last week CSX parked a train in Mobile for hours longer than Amtrak intends to be there... yet the Port stayed open!
We're ready to make needed investments to bring Amtrak back to the Gulf Coast but we won't waste taxpayer dollars to fix problems that have nothing to do with us.
4. Funding to invest in CSX's infrastructure has already been committed.
Gulf Coast States and Amtrak have won and matched federal grants of more than $60M for targeted upgrades to CSX infrastructure.
CSX & NS know the STB's decision could set a precedent for passenger rail growth in America funded by the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law.
Communities are closer than ever to receiving the rail service they deserve. That’s why they’ve gone all out just to block 2 daily trains!
We’re live from Baton Rouge, LA where we’re working with our partners
@La_DOTD
, Kansas City Southern,
@CanadianPacific
, and
@USDOTFRA
to launch Amtrak service between LA’s two largest cities!
Let the STB know that it's time to reconnect America's communities!📢

Yesterday,
@POTUS
and
@USDOT
announced nearly $300MM in funding for the Gateway Program’s Hudson Yards Casing project.
Thanks to the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, we’re one step closer to replacing the Hudson Tunnel and building a faster and more resilient rail network! 🚆🇺🇸
Hey Gulf Coast! CSX thinks the best trains are ones that arrive a few times a week in the middle of the night. We think you deserve better. It's time for a fair deal.
#YallAboard
Ridership on Amtrak's state-supported Virginia routes is HIGHER than it was pre-pandemic ↗️🙌
Thanks to increased service to Roanoke and Norfolk and the resumption of an additional roundtrip to Newport News, more Virginians are choosing to take the train over driving!
Inflation's bad, right? Today CSX and NS once again raised their price for Gulf Coast Amtrak service. This time by $84M‼️
They're asking for $540M to get their 2-mile-long freight trains out of the way. That's nearly $4M per mile from you and $0 from them.
#NoGoldplatedRR
it's mode shift monday! 🚗➡️🚆
the transportation sector creates the largest share of US GHG emissions (~30%) but rail only makes up 2% of those emissions.
any serious climate change solution will require a fundamental mode shift from cars to passenger rail and mass transit!
We're thrilled about the soaring demand for intercity passenger rail and are committed to delivering more trains for more people!

Live from Pascagoula, MS... it's day 2 of the Gulf Coast STB hearing!🚄
Did you know: CSX and NS clogged their self-serving RTC study with hundreds of nonexistent trains while refusing to share data and assumptions- even though Amtrak and the FRA were paying for the modeling!
If you said the US... you would be right! At ~140K miles, we have the largest rail network in the world. For scale, our interstate system is ~50K miles.
We have the most robust freight rail network in the world- and we can, and should, utilize it to serve more passengers too! 🌎
The Gateway Program will create over 81,000 jobs & generate $20 billion in economic activity, while improving the US rail network’s capacity and reliability! 👷🚆

Phoenix is the largest US city without Amtrak service and now's our chance to change that!
@RepGregStanton
and leaders from across Arizona support our vision for frequent rail service between Phoenix and Tucson. Let's create more transportation choices for Arizonans 🛤️
Expanding passenger rail to Phoenix will strengthen our economy and reduce congestion and emissions on our highways.
The Bipartisan Infrastructure Law provided historic funding for Amtrak — now I’m focused on working with
@SecretaryPete
to put those dollars to work in Arizona.

"Death by delay must not become the order of the day."
**mic drop** from Mayor John Robert Smith
@T4America
at the STB hearing on restoring Amtrak service in the Gulf Coast.
Delays drive up costs and create uncertainty for communities that would benefit from Amtrak service.
