I live in wonderful Portland, Oregon. Retired after 12 years serving on the Portland City Council. I post items I find interesting.
Portland, OR
Joined May 2012
The entire Portland City Council stands with @tedwheeler in pushing for a statewide Stay Home order, and supporting him in Cities/Counties/Metro leading if the state doesn't. In times of crisis, solidarity and recognizing which government entity has the most authority is crucial.

The awful weather showed we can get 1,000+ folks from outside into shelters if beds are open. We pay $$$ in taxes yet @multco doesn’t use the money to get people out of the cold and rain. I hated being without power/heat/water for even a few days. Do better @JVPforOregon @multco!.

Ahem. Succeeds rather than replaces, please. @carmelitapdx is nobody’s replacement. She will forge new territory as the first Latinx City Commissioner and perhaps the 9th woman, 2nd woman of color on the Council. She will make City Hall even more open to all, as I have.

I wasn't allowed to endorse due to leading the @OpenPortland program, but now I can express delight that my successor will be Commissioner-elect @carmelitapdx! I know @CommishFish would be similarly elated. Also very happy so many candidates were empowered by public financing.

👉The very morning our editorial pushes for an exploration of a free, public transit system, a @StreetRoots vendor was issued a citation. Please read this thread to learn more, and then find a vendor to read the whole editorial.

So glad to have @JamieforOregon to vote for enthusiastically as Dem nominee rather than “meh, better than the R but marginally as so many bad votes”. National now says toss up from lean Dem so let’s get her in!.
I'm honored to be elected as Oregon’s Democratic Nominee for Congress in OR-5. From Sellwood to Sunriver, Oregonians never stopped believing we can protect our families, our climate and our civil rights. Oregonians — this is your victory.

My son's apt words while I am sitting at my computer staring at my friend's photo and struggling to choose mine. I will make a statement tomorrow. Tonight is for remembering the past twelve years' adventures with Nick, and for sending loving thoughts to his awesome family.
Very sorry to hear about Nick’s passing. He was a good man and I fondly remember his help on my mom’s campaign as well as various soccer related activities we took part in together. My prayers are with his family.

Come to Portland @KamalaHarris and @Tim_Walz! You probably win Oregon anyway, but still you can help @AndreaRSalinas @bynum4thewin take back the House, and counter the orange man’s assertion Portland is burning. We are not, we are rebuilding after the Trump attack on our city.
I was in Portland in 2008 and I'm not misrembering. Obama drew an estimated 75,000 to the Willamette waterfront. Harris and Walz may well draw crowds this big when they move their rallies outdoors.

As needed restrictions on public gatherings multiply, I am especially grateful to @trimet drivers who help us get to health care, child care, social services, essential jobs, and other necessary destinations for those of us who don’t/can’t walk, bike or drive there. Thank you!.

I am angered by the number of @MikeBloomberg ads on TV tonight. Hasn’t put in the time to participate in the Dem campaign til now, doesn’t have a clear vision and plans like @ewarren yet buying ads on multiple stations to use his wealth to try to get into the race.

Yes!! Corvallis went fareless and increased transit use 38%. If Portlanders really want to move the dial on climate disruption and sustainability @PortlandBPS, we must ask the state to fund all public transit including @trimet at no cost to riders.

Most Portlanders live in safe US House districts. I live in CD 5, where @bynum4thewin needs all SW Portlanders' votes to help flip the House. I hope everyone votes despite researching 19 Mayoral and 29 District 4 candidates being time-consuming.

Sad to see this. I’ve been happy that @trimet drivers have welcomed all regardless of ability to pay or carrying bags of cans or belongings. Most riders including those with big bags pay and are no problem to rest of riders. You’re not improving my customer experience @trimet.
We’ve been working to improve the customer experience through increased security efforts and cleaner vehicles, platforms and transit centers. To support those efforts, we will be doing more enforcement of our existing rules for riding beginning July 1. This includes more fare.

Portland must unite in opposition to 45’s thugs. Can most of us agree on that?.
My friend @SMeieran — a Portland ER doctor and County Commissioner — was tear gassed by Donald Trump’s occupying army for peacefully protesting. If you’re not terrified by what’s happening in Portland right now, you’re not paying attention.

Unfortunate that @Oregonian paywall doesn’t allow everyone to read this, but the headline is telling - OR 5 @LChavezDeRemer refused to sign on to call for peaceful transition of power.
Oregon leaders urge calm in Portland ahead of next week’s election. "The signatories also included all Oregon members of Congress who represent portions of the Portland metro region with the exception of one: Rep. Lori Chavez-DeRemer.".

Eww. Not what @OpenPortland small donor elections is for. Ok for voters to support multiple candidates, not ok for candidates to trade contributions or contributors.
@sophiegreenleaf Some city council candidates appear to have tried to game public financing, swapping donations (apparently illegally, experts say) to leverage matching taxpayer dollars. But @sophiegreenleaf is on the case.

Coincidence that perhaps the three smallest Portland stores? I stopped by two of them in past year and didn’t find what I needed.
This Saturday, Target will begin shuttering three of its Portland locations—citing threats to employee safety and organized retail crime. “We recently had an individual in one of our stores that was peeling off his face with pliers in the bathroom.”.

It's nearly five years since @sfritz2994 was killed in a crossover crash on I-5. I'm grateful the median barricades installed due to the Fritz-Fairchild Act have saved another life. Pretty sure this section of I-5 didn't have median cable barriers 5 years ago. Thanks @PDXGovRel!.
Well Beaver Nation, all I can say is that I'm extremely thankful to have walked away from this at MP 241. As my car spun out on I-5 south, I had some doubts. My thanks to the EMT's, Trooper Mike Wahlberg, Lyle from ODOT, Micah Smith. OK!

Stay home Portlanders! We’ve made it this far. We can endure more isolation so we can live until there’s a vaccine. Get take out from restaurants and grocery stores to keep workers employed. Thank you workers who have to be out. The rest of us can stay home to help keep you safe.
There's been a seismic shift in the location of Oregon's coronavirus cases:. A majority are now in the densely populated Portland metro area. Multnomah County is now seeing higher case rates than any major county on the West Coast. @andrewtheen w/ deets.

Oregonians need to continue social distancing despite increasingly good weather. It will be warm and sunny in June and July. Let’s help everyone make it through til then. Health care providers are depending on us.
Some major revisions to the @IHME_UW model tonight. Assuming restrictions to movement continue through May, Oregon is projected to *easily* be able to meet peak load of ICU/ventilators. Very encouraging signs.

This is one reason so many Oregonians seek help in Portland. We need statewide and nationwide solutions to provide housing for Americans experiencing hard times.
CORRECTION: a rep for the city reached back out later today & changed her answer. Salem officials now confirm, of the 140 promised shelter beds, they've opened zero.

If you also wear a mask when outside in public spaces, it shows you remember we’re in a pandemic & that you care whether old people like me/your loved elders/other vulnerable people live or die. Let’s make face covering the new normal until MDs like @SMeieran say it’s OK to stop.
Starting June 24, residents in seven Oregon counties, including Multnomah County, will be required to use a face covering when indoors in a space shared by other members of the public. Follow the thread for important information and considerations about this new state mandate.

This strike changed my life. It inspired me to run for City Council, to be the voice of folks unable to speak up due to repression and inequalities. Respect Nurses. We care about the people and things that truly matter.
Throw back to our strike at OHSU in 2001. 56 days long. Our solidarity is rooted in our history✊✊🏿We are back at the table bargaining again next week. RT if you think our OHSU members deserve a fair contract! . #WeAreONA #ThrowBackThursday @OHSUNews

@alex_zee @JoeStreckert People say all kinds of erroneous statements in testimony. It’s considered rude to embarrass them by saying, “actually, that’s not true”after they speak. Council members trust viewers/listeners to fact check rather than believing everything anyone says.
