Tariffs are simply taxes. Conservatives once united against new taxes. Taxing trade will mean less trade and higher prices.

I have listened to @SenMarcoRubio's Senate Confirmation Hearing for his new position. Whether one agrees or disagrees with him, the soon-to-be confirmed Sec for State is eloquent, well-prepared, and has clear ideas about US interests around the globe. What I am not sure of is his familiarity with the African context notwithstanding his middle-of-the-road answer to questions about Africa by @SenBooker. The new Secretary's Africa policy could be undermined by his staff. If the suggestion that Peter Pham, who has proven to be a lightweight and controversial in African affairs, becomes his point person for the Africa Bureau, then much will not be expected in the next four years. However, if a heavy-weight person who can prime US interest in Africa beyond a narrow lobbyist's interest is selected for the Africa Bureau, then an active Africa policy can be formulated. The previous Trump Admin walked on the continent's affairs carefully and skillfully utilized several Enovy's to learn more about the local conditions. It may be a prudent policy to employ envoys as was done in the past. Otherwise, the next four years would be wasted. I wish the new secretary a productive engagement with Africa

I want to express my heartfelt gratitude to @CMTammyMorales for her years of service to the city of Seattle, and especially her unwavering commitment to the South End. Tammy and I joined our respective councils at the same time, and from day one, she has been a powerful ally and advocate for our shared constituents. We worked together on addressing gun violence in Rainier Beach and Mt. Baker, enhancing pedestrian safety in the Rainier Valley, and advancing equitable development initiatives to ensure that longtime residents can thrive amid growth and change. While I’m sad to lose Tammy as a city partner, I know she’ll continue to make a positive impact in whatever comes next. Huge thanks to her incredible staff—people like Evelyn and Alexis—whose hard work has been instrumental. To the next District 2 city councilmember: you have big shoes to fill, and I look forward to collaborating with you to continue building a South End and King County where everyone can thrive.
