I keep coming back to this 2022 study after years - quite lovely! "Number of growth days and not length of the growth period determines radial stem growth of temperate trees" https://t.co/CF4qfutl2T
onlinelibrary.wiley.com
We analysed daily radial stem growth dynamics of 160 individuals of seven temperate tree species at 47 sites in Switzerland measured over 8 years with automatic dendrometers. We found that trees...

Ecologists should read this, and giggle at how similar these problems are to our field. Though, data in economic research seem (=almost certainly are) vastly superior that in Ecology in accessibility, standardization, replication, and resolution.
Conjecture: econ academia is very far from the optimal architecture for data research. The optimal architecture is much more centralized. Half the researchers work together, or in large teams, to build clean and efficient datasets. The rest work in smaller teams to analyze data

Excited to share our paper in @PNASNews with @AldoCompagnoni and Tom Miller ! Climate change may push dioecious plants toward female-biased sex ratios which will impair seed production. Ignoring this feedback underestimates range shifts.
pnas.org
Global climate change has triggered an urgent need for predicting the reorganization of Earth’s biodiversity. For dioecious species (those with sep...

We are still looking for a MS level student to help populate the @PadrinoDB! This is a position for someone eager to transform their R skills, and to obtain extensive training into statistical and population modeling. Position is based at the @idiv. https://t.co/8tThQIlfTQ

These confounded and selection damaged large sample observational studies are possibly doing more harm than good at this point
Yikes. New study in Nature (N = 180,000) links a "vegetarian-type diet" with "anxiety symptoms, depressive symptoms, mental distress, psychotic experience, self-harm and trauma and a relatively lower well-being score." Worth a read.

Feeling full of gratitude right now 🥹. Thank you everyone who has made these past few years the best I could have asked for - especially my amazing supervisors @Rob_SalGo and @iremsepil . So grateful for all the inspiration, growth and friendships built over the DPhil.
Congrats to Dr "no-corrections" @sam_gascoigne. Thx @EJMilnerGulland & @CJEMetcalf for assessing his DPhil & to @iremsepil for her mentorship and input into his work @OxfordBiology @PembrokeOxford

Just switched from rstan to cmdstanr for fitting ODE models in @mcmc_stan in R and MCMC now runs >3x faster! 🤯

Is it my impression or querying ERA5 data is consistently (very) slow?

To my horror, today I realized that the fist of these two not only does not work, but doesn't throw an error message either!!! parse(text='demo <- c(1,2)') %>% eval eval( parse(text='demo <- c(1,2)') )

Trees grow their stem mostly at night to avoid high vapor pressure deficits. Quite a surprise to me - never miss the link to physiological processes! https://t.co/SHyOf3obhs
nph.onlinelibrary.wiley.com
The timing of diel stem growth of mature forest trees is still largely unknown, as empirical data with high temporal resolution have not been available so far. Consequently, the effects of day–nig...
