Thinking of building a new barn or expanding an existing one? Lots of important considerations touched on in this interview. We are very fortunate to have Greg as part of our knowledgeable team!

Lots of brown/purple wheat between tile runs this fall. We assessed some fields after a few days of drier weather and things definitely look better up close than from afar. We are a long way from spring but we will stay cautiously optimistic!

Our team has been busy soil sampling between rain and snow. We dry and grind all samples before submitting them to the lab to ensure a uniform sample. Sampling this time of year also helps to identify problem weeds and get a head start on next year’s chem programs!

Checking out dandelion control in this grass hay today and couldn’t help notice incredible differences in grass species susceptibility to rust. Late season management added to next year’s checklist ✔️

It sure has been a tough fall to get wheat into good conditions! Many fields that received over 4” of rain are coming along and have respectable stands. Some of the heavier clays have more drowned seedlings. Good time to scout wheat stands.

A big thank-you to those in extension and industry evaluating tar spot control options! We had the opportunity to tour trials in Rodney today and “seeing is believing” when it comes to the devastation it can cause. Hybrid selection, scouting, and proper fungicide use will be key.

Checking to see how good our N management was this season in this impressive field of corn silage. We’re taking soil and stalk nitrate tests here.

We’ve seen lots of rust in grass hay fields lately. Don’t forget about the fungicide pass on your forage oats!

It’s been a busy season but we are taking some time to evaluate varieties in preparation for winter crop planning. We are appreciative of all of the great research done in Ontario!

Well the rain may have put a pause on harvest but we have had some beautiful conditions for soil sampling! Great way to scout for weeds as well and plan a burndown.

Aphid pressure sure has been field specific this year. This particular field was the worst we have seen with several “hot spots” like this.

We’ve been called out to quite a few fields with poor soybean emergence. Most often it is a moisture issue, but sometimes it’s something more. Heavy corn seed maggot pressure in this field has significantly impacted population. Good reminder on the value of seed treatments!

This has been a week for the cows! We’ve been checking new seedings for herbicide timing, soil moisture availability after rye, and assessing alfalfa plant health.

Agreed, Ken! Lots of powdery mildew and septoria in the canopy. Fungicide pass definitely worthwhile even if we get too late for a herbicide.

Cold & Damp isn’t helping the cause either, numerous reports of Septoria pressure increasing rapidly this week. Should see a nice benefit from fungicide applications between now and next week #headlineamp

Earliest wheat in West Perth/Huron has reached Z31 (1st node). PGR timing on this wheat targeted for this weekend/next week once temps rise.

Lots of questions on winter forages this week. N is your friend when targeting yield and protein. Less lodging risk with triticale than rye - gas pedal down on the triticale but abide the speed limit in rye. Double cropping? We’d love to hear what you’re trying this year!
