Google the International Union of Operating Engineers for your area, and apply to the apprenticeship program. You'll start out at 50% of scale, so around 30$/hr in the Washington locals, and get a 5% raise every 6 months for the 3 year apprenticeship.

When I finish a building and dismantle the crane, I could be waiting for a few weeks or months until my next crane goes up. Head out on a one way ticket until the boss calls. Unemployment eligible, as I'm "laid off" after every job wraps up.

Our union covers everything from forklifts and elevators, to cranes and oil refineries. Mechanics, operators, etc.

I fired a slightly corroded 7.5mm French from my 1936 MAS rifle. The cartridge burst from the side, the bullet barely left the barrel, and the hot powder blew through the bolt and into my face. Thank God for eye protection.
