Funny enough that was my takeaway from watching the show. It didn't lean so much into megacorporate warfare as a theme but rather how cybernetics and trauma caused David to slowly lose his humanity. Despite being a good kid, Night City destroyed him like everyone else.

You just described Puente Hills Mall, the location used to film the parking lot scene for Back to the Future. It’s only being kept alive by the AMC movie theater and Round 1. This is the nerd relic used to attract curious visitors.
