I got pulled out of a zoom meeting to see a train in the Sky by my 8 year old. I asked him why is this not plane. He said, very matter of factly, planes don’t have compartments. We then spent a while imaging things happening in the train.

My parents hoist a flag at their home in Mumbai every year. It is the flag my grand parents hoisted in their home at Tiruchy on 15th Aug 1947. Among the few possessions my grandmother carried to Mumbai, her 2 sarees stayed wrapped in this flag till the day she died

After having sat in PhD and iPHD interviews for the last few weeks one piece of advice to all students…..
Always look up websites for the institute and labs of interest when attending interviews. Does help to know what your interests align with and it’s rather easy to do.

. Have always found their pH sensitivity fascinating. Acidic soil, with a pH lower than 6.0, yields blue or lavender-blue blooms. pH between 6 and 7, the blooms turn purple or bluish-pink. Alkaline soil, with a pH above 7.0, promotes pinks and reds.

Welcome move, though the percentage hikes could have been better. The concern for many students also seems to be "will the fellowship come on time". Can we also make sure that disbursement happens on time. This is really vital for any hike to be effective.

75 yrs ago on 15th Aug 1947 my dad who was then 10 had a flag raised in his home in Golden Rock, Tiruchirappalli. Such a privilege for him to be able to raise this flag with his grandson who incidentally turns 10 on 15th Aug 2020.

There is a interesting backstory for how this article originated when I was a postdoc in Martins labs. Still something I recommend to my students. Will suggest reading it once every year during your PhD. What you get from the article will change every year!
I remember breaking down to my Ph.D. advisor about how stupid I felt while troubleshooting a problem in my project when she handed me this paper. Years later it is still relevant to young students starting off in Science. It's ok to feel stupid, we all do on a regular basis.
