This feature is conserved between NRCs and ZAR1, but to a lesser extent in most other sensor NLRs, underscoring a distinct evolutionary trajectory of this feature among NLRs specialized in different functions.

Through a mutation screen, we identified several hydrophobic residues in the coiled-coil domain of the helper NLR protein NRC4 that are critical for its function. Some of these residues cluster together in the structure of the coiled-coil domain, forming a hydrophobic core.
