Eric Staal post-game, when told there is photographic evidence of him wearing a pride jersey in Montreal:
“I haven’t before. I never have. … I haven’t worn a pride jersey before.”
(Staal wore No. 21 with the Canadiens during the 2020-21 season.)
Mind-boggling stat from the NHL: The Panthers were in a playoff spot for only 28% of the regular season (54 of 190 days). They are the only team in the NHL’s expansion era (since 1967-68) to reach the Final after spending less than 30% of the season in a playoff spot.
P.K. Subban on Wayne Simmonds:
"I know him personally, and throughout my career, whenever the trade deadlines come, I was always hoping, whether in Montreal or here, that we’d be able to add a guy like him to the team. Finally, we have him."
Regardless of how you feel about P.K. Subban, the Predators greatly benefited from his presence. He brought visibility to the franchise that never would have existed without him.
I’m sure you saw the video of P.K. Subban offering encouragement to a 13-year-old boy named Ty, a black hockey player who has been the target of racism.
Ty is Ty Cornett. This is his story.
I asked Filip Forsberg if he’s ready to play tomorrow if the decision were solely up to him.
Forsberg: “I’ll ask you. How did I look in practice?”
Me: “I think I saw you score a goal between your legs.”
Forsberg (smiling): “That’s what I do. ... It feels good.”
Peter Laviolette should really stop making bets with his players about sweeping Western Canadian road trips.
Last season, the coaching staff had to wear Christmas suits on the bench. This season...
After all that has transpired this season, here’s a sentence I didn’t expect to type (and one you didn’t expect to read, admit it):
The 2018-19 Predators are Central Division champions.
Ryan Johansen: "It wasn’t like we snuck away with one or weaseled a game out or whatever you want to call it. We controlled the game tonight. With our backs against the wall, we went out and we controlled the game."
Viktor Arvidsson assisted with a marriage proposal. He put the ring in his glove as he walked toward the ice for warmups, then handed it to Conor Payne. Arvidsson is fiancée Morgan Landsberg's favorite player.
Hard to believe that this ends my third full season on Predators duty. As always, thank you for following along with me. Regardless of your feelings toward me on any given day, I appreciate your readership.
I’m excited to share that I’ll be freelancing for

this season, working primarily with

The Predators, down 2-0 and 3-1, having lost six in a row overall and 10 in a row on the road, come to D.C. and are going to defeat the Capitals, who had won 16 of 19.
The answer? Moms. No one wants to disappoint Mom.
If the Predators would've lost to the Blues in regulation:
Predators - 75 points
Blues - 73 points
Because they won:
Predators - 77 points (55 GP)
Blues - 72 points (59 GP)
Huge swing.
The Predators traded their second-leading goal scorer (Niederreiter) while already missing two top-six forwards (Forsberg and Johansen). It *finally* seems that they have come to terms with their situation.
Can we submit Rocco Grimaldi as one of the better values in the NHL this season (at least compared to players in comparable roles)? He's been fantastic at league minimum.
News you crave: Rocco Grimaldi did not score with “Frankie” tonight. He joked he gave “him” a break because he had an emotional night Saturday. It was “Emerson” tonight.
Today was my last day at The Athletic. Thank you for your support over the past four years. I’m looking forward to figuring out what’s next.

11/3/11: Pekka Rinne signs a seven-year contract and records a shutout on his 29th birthday.
11/3/18: Pekka Rinne signs a two-year contract and records a shutout on his 36th birthday.
Rocco Grimaldi: "Growing up, when you fall and you get a boo-boo, who do you run to? Mom. We're on a six-game losing streak. We're kind of hurting and banged up. Who do we need to come running to help? Mom."
If Malcolm Subban starts tomorrow, then it’ll be the first time that he and P.K. have opposed each other (outside of their childhood pickup games). Father Karl will be there, too. It’s the Knights’ fathers trip.
Craig Smith said this is the angriest he's been at the end of a season: "It sucks. ... I don't think that we were playing our best for the last couple months, if we're being honest. It sucks right now. I think guys are losing sleep over it. I'm losing sleep over it."
The Predators surpass the Jets for first place in the Central Division and Western Conference. Since Nov. 1, they are a league-leading 13-3-1 and are averaging 3.64 goals per game.
Maybe I'm a cynic, but I'm in full believe-it-when-I-see-it mode with the Predators. They deserve credit for not folding after the early deficit, but they're way too up-and-down to expect them to get into a groove before the playoffs start.
Matt Duchene says he’ll be net-front on the Predators’ power play. Based on what Peter Laviolette said last night, the team’s “PP1” appears to be Duchene, Forsberg, Johansen, Arvidsson and Josi.
