Today is
#WorldLionDay
. Lions are today extinct in 26 countries on the continent where they once roamed. We should come together to protect the king of the jungle. 🦁
Very excited to be among the namers this year for the 18th edition annual
@Kwitaizina
Gorilla Naming Ceremony in
@MusanzeDistrict
. It is indeed a pleasure to witness the onset of a new generation that speaks to the great conservation work being done by
@RwandaGov
@RDBrwanda
Congratulations, Ethiopia! May this extraordinary achievement inspire similar action across the continent. we can green Africa again, one tree at a time!
#Africawewant
Super green. Ethiopia tries to break world record by planting 200million trees in one day. Ends up planting 350million. Ethiopia is determined to reclaim lost forests, which covered 35% of country in 1900 but only 4% of country in 2000.
After the naming ceremony, I embarked on a quest to put a face to the name & to describe this discovery as anything less than breathtaking would be an understatement. I am happy to present to you -Indatezuka, delicately cradled in her mother's arms!

#KwitaIzina
We have lost the last male Northern
#WhiteRhino
, leaving only two of its subspecies alive in the world.
#Sudan
's death is a very good example of
#Africa
losing its heritage. How did we get here? How will we explain this to the next generation of Africans?
#Only2Left
#RIPSudan
We have only
#OneEarth
, therefore, to conserve this
#biodiversity
and ensure we have a shot at seeing the next four decades – to achieve the various goals, as conservation organizations and as a whole,
#Africanleadership
should be at the center. Happy
#WorldEnvironmentDay
There is growing consensus that we, as Africans, must lead in how the continent manages its relationship with nature. We must be united in setting a global agenda that invests in
#Africa
, holds us accountable, and allows us to enact policies that benefit our people and nature
Rwanda is the continental leader in conservation. Countries around the world should follow
@RwandaGov
lead and celebrate their wildlife the way Rwanda does.
#KwitaIzina2018
I spent last week in the field - amazing to witness some of the successes from
@AWF_Official
and partners' work in
@OlPejeta
and Amboseli ecosystems. It was also great to see community lodges & increased benefits from the wildlife economy here in Kenya.
#TheAfricaWeWant
We may not all get a chance to go on
#safari
to exotic destinations, but that does not mean we cannot enjoy Africa’s iconic wildlife! The very best wildlife images are currently hanging at the National Gallery of Zimbabwe courtesy of

#MkapaAwards
Getting ready to reveal the name
@AWF_Official
and
@RDBrwanda
have for the baby Gorilla. A name that resonates with our vision as an organization towards ensuring #
#Africanconservation
success! With over a population of over 2300 gorillas, we must protect this species.
#KwitaIzina
In order for conservation in Africa to work, it has to be led by
#Africans
. We need more African participation in the sector and more African-driven commitments and investments in conservation. Governments, private sector and industry all have a role to play in this
#AfricaWeWant
Today, I join the world in saluting park rangers in recognition of their efforts to protect our natural resources for present and future generations.
#WorldRangerDay2018
At
@AWF_Official
, our work is mostly advising and assisting national governments and
#Africans
in navigating the transition towards economic modernity and social transformation, they aspire to, with a significant and representative complement of
#wildlife
and wild places intact.
As Africans, we should be proud of our
#wildlife
, our vast
#landscapes
& our continent’s uniqueness. We need more leaders who recognize the value of wildlife to the communities, economies & are willing to make the right decisions for
#Africa
.
#Mountaingorilla
#Conservation
Mountain gorillas are the only great apes with a growing population. Proud that
@AWF_Official
played a major role in creation of IGCP - in negotiation of Great Virunga Transboundary Collaboration Treaty. A great achievement when NGOs & Governments partner.
Delighted to share that the mountain gorilla population has surpassed 1000! Incredible news for conservation and much needed wonderful news for Virunga, home to over a third of the worlds endangered mountain gorillas.
Leading discussions on the current economic model being used in Africa and why we need to consider a change of mindset on 'Reclaiming and Reframing economics' at the

Huge opportunity for
#China
to evaluate and develop a system to monitor
#wildlife
trade. The idea of consuming bushmeat in this century is fundamentally wrong on many fronts. It’s time for China to rethink the role of wildlife - it can't only be for food.
Great partnership with Governments and the dogs are fantastic. Can not wait to see the team next week when I visit. These our resources, our heritage
#Africa
- this is our fight!
I came to
#Rwanda
& added a 3rd born, female baby gorilla who was born on 13th of September-21 from the Mutobo family to its mother Igitangaza and her name is INDATEZUKA, which means
#resilience
. In true attribution to the nature of
#Africanconservation
.
@Kwitaizina
#KwitaIzina
On behalf of the whole of the
@AWF_Official
family, we are deeply saddened by the sudden demise of one of Kenya's iconic conservationists, Dr. Richard Leakey. It is a true loss to the entire community and our thoughts are with his family and friends. May his soul Rest in Peace.
Most of
#Africa
’s wealth is above the ground, therefore the chosen development pathway should be underpinned by the reality that our lives and economies are embedded in
#nature
and
#biodiversity
and ecosystem services. That the current conservation model has proven ineffective.
Africa has 30% of the global
#biodiversity
that the rest of the world relies on and 1/3 of the world’s fresh water. That means the world cannot fix the ecological problems without
#Africa
. We must make important decisions to safeguard this precious ecosystem for a better future.
It's not a question of conservation versus development - we need both of these economic sectors to thrive, but not at the expense of the environment & wildlife. We must find the right balance.
#AfricaWeWant
#MyAfrica
@AWF_Official
This is great news coming from West
#Africa
- a region that has experienced significant biodiversity loss compared to any other region on the continent besides the Sahara.
This
#WorldGorillaDay
, we are starkly reminded that these are our closest cousins with whom we share the planet. If nothing else, let us all rise and protect our closest relative.They are only found in Africa and therefore are as African as any one of us.
#sustainableconservation
Happy
#WorldWildlifeDay
! Let's remember that wildlife defines our heritage, culture, the brand of
#Africa
and our aspirations as a continent. These iconic species do an excellent job at defining our place on the global stage. They need your voice.
#AfricaWeWant
#AfricanVoices
As the world celebrates
#WorldLionDay
, the recent report by
@IPCC_CH
discloses the extensive impact on species habitat as a result of human influence. It further reveals the urgent need for the 🌎to recognize that
#Africa
is an ally in the
#climatechange
response.
#DoBetter
Collaborative engagements and partnerships with African governments, communities and the youth are a key determinant of the success of conservation in Africa.
#AfricaWeWant
@AWF_Official
The correct path, on which we have to challenge ourselves is in helping with how the continent should embrace the future and create an
#Africa
that makes wildlife and wildlands a centerpiece of
#sustainabledevelopment
‐ recognizing its unique and inherent value to our heritage.
We must agree that conservation must change if we intend on seeing our grandchildren enjoy the breathtaking beauty of the new Africa, that is being shaped today by Africans through the decisions that are economical, political, and social.
#SustainableDevelopment
The population of
#giraffes
dropped from over 157,000 in 1985 to around 97,500 in 2015 – a 40% drop in 30 years, thanks to
#habitatloss
&
#poaching
. It’s time that we stick our neck out for this iconic animals before a complete wipeout.
#EndangeredSpecies
#Africa
's economic future has never been more promising and its natural heritage has never been more at risk. We must wake up to the realization that
#Habitatloss
,
#climatechange
, and
#IWT
are deteriorating
#Africa
's magnificent
#wildlife
and wildlands at an alarming rate.
Today we have officially handed over a very important property to the
@RwandaGov
as represented by the
@RDBrwanda
to be incorporated into
@PNVRwanda
. This is a great milestone signalling new commitment by the Government to ensure
#conservation
benefit every citizen.
The Pandemic report released by
@IPBES
highlights the important role wildlife and biodiversity conservation can play in inhibiting the occurrence of future pandemics. This role needs to be played by all of us because it is our health at stake.
#OneHealth
On the first-ever
#WorldFemaleRangerDay
, we take this opportunity to appreciate the global effort and selfless sacrifice these ladies make in ensuring that our
#wildlife
is well protected. We want to assure you that the important role you play is never forgotten! We salute you🤝!
At
@AWF_Official
, We believe that the key to ensure conservation success in a changing
#Africa
is guaranteeing that
#Africans
relationship with wildlife and wildlands is strong and that wildlife is part of our core assets that can drive growth on the continent.
African countries are speaking with one voice to call for the restriction of the international trade in giraffe hide and bones. This wildlife is our heritage and we cannot stay silent as it goes extinct.
#africawewant
Today as we celebrate
#InternationalWomensDay
we congratulate women who've promoted conservation and
#sustainabledevelopment
in Africa. Africa must address and fight for
#equality
and empower women (who're managers of the largest percentage of Africans - the youth).
The mounting pressure on wildlife and wild lands posed by Africa’s accelerating growth requires African conservation practitioners at all levels of society to understand, innovate, lead, make decisions, and/or exert influence on the future direction of development.
#AfricaWeWant
Great to read stories of
#African
conservation heroes like Jeneria from Northern Kenya! Communities living adjacent to wildlife must be actively involved in conservation.
@tusk_org
@EwasoLions
A brilliant read by good friend
@JohnEScanlon
highlighting the need for significant country policies & regulations in order to fight
#illegalwildlifetrade
head on. It is our individual responsibility to protect and safeguard our wildlife.
Our
#wildlife
has lost a grand champion, again
#DaphneSheldrick
. Her determination, courage & commitment to
#wildlifeconservation
are qualities that should be replicated in her honor to ensure that Africa’s wildlife survives. Our sincere condolences to the family and to
@DSWT
.
At
@AWF_Official
we have worked with these gorilla communities for decades and we have witnessed the familial cohesion demonstrated by these species with each other across these borders. As they reopen, I hope we treat this as a lesson to live together in harmony.
#Rwanda
has announced it will re-open its borders with
#Uganda
as part of the efforts to give a fresh momentum between the two countries.
Rwanda will reopen Gatuna Border Post on Monday January 31 to allow easy movement between the two countries.
Happy
#WorldRhinoDay
! This incredible species highlights the urgency for the world to understand the significance of Africa’s wildlife in a modern continent and to decide what role this unique wealth gets to play in shaping our future. Let us aim to do more and protect them!
