@britainmorris Good reminder. The Church publishes a list of hymns and children's songs in the public domain that should be safe to use, but good to keep in mind

@realdeseretbro The Church isn't hemorrhaging members. And what increase there is is departures among US members is due to apostasy and laziness, not any supposed directional change in the Church.

@Tower_Overwatch I don't speak to open dissenters, my target audience is those good members in the middle who feel pulled by the voice of dissenters only because they don't understand.

That's an interesting question. I would offer three thoughts: First, even if the devil can hear our vocal prayers, obviously the benefits of prayer outweigh that concern. "The devil trembles when he sees the weakest Saint on his knees." Second, while it's obvious the devil has known the purpose of someone's prayer and tried to respond in imitation of God (think of the Temple), I don't see scriptural justification that this is the norm. In fact, the quote I shared above specifically states God prevents Satan from fully exercising his power, and I suspect that includes preventing his unfettered access to our communications with God. I think God wants us to treat prayer as if it were "end-to-end encrypted." Third, note what Elder Lawrence says we should avoid-- it's the negative communications like murmuring and backbiting. Those are sinful communications and ought not be in our prayers to begin with.

Story time: I had strong feelings for the girl I was dating and enjoyed being with her. But I was a teenager; I had no idea whether this was lasting love or just infatuation. I was at her house on New Year's Eve before my mission. She got sick and started vomiting. As I sat by, trying to help as best I could, I realized I would happily spend the rest of my life serving her even in unpleasant situations like this. That answered my question. We were married right when I got back from my mission. This isn't her favorite story. "So how did you know she was the one?" "Well, you see, she was throwing up..." 🤣
When you're trying to decide whether to marry someone, ask yourself, "Is this someone I can see myself cleaning puke up with in the middle of the night?"

I used this quote last week in our lesson on repentance. I love that Pres. @NelsonRussellM used the word ennobling. We often see repentance as "lowering" and "humiliating." As if it were a punishment to break us down. This connotation is engendered by Satan. Repentance doesn't abase us, it elevates us. Noble means royal. As sons and daughters of God, we are royalty-- youth of the noble birthright. Repentance exalts us from the indignity of sin to live up to our true, divine identity. I wish everyone could catch the attitude of joyful repentance President Nelson tries to instill in us. This is why my old Twitter handle was "JoyfulRepenter."
“Nothing is more liberating, more ennobling, or more crucial to our individual progression than is a regular, daily focus on repentance. … It is the key to happiness and peace of mind.” -President Russell M. Nelson

Words of wisdom from Elder @BednarDavidA. Elevating our language to center on our Savior elevates our worship to center on Him, too.
When we refer to the temple as the house of the Lord, we focus more purposefully on our Savior Jesus Christ. We focus on our covenants, which connect us to Him and our Heavenly Father.
