A @SoilAssociation and @ASOAntibiotics study found that 16 of 20 leading UK restaurant chains have an antibiotic policy, but many of these policies were very weak. More details here

Welcome progress has been made over the past decade, but it is disappointing that use in pigs increased by 18% in 2023. Improvements to husbandry are urgently needed. The VMD should introduce mandatory antibiotic-use data collection, as there is still no good data for ruminants.
It's day 2⃣ of #WAAW2024 & @vmdgovuk are pleased to announce the publication of this year's UK Veterinary Antibiotic Resistance Sales and Surveillance 2023 Report! Read the report👉 📺Find out more about this year's results by watching this video below👇

"The growing hunger for meat is increasing demand for livestock and use of antibiotics – some of which are used to treat animals that are not sick, sometimes as a substitute for keeping them in clean conditions, Davies said." #farmantibiotics #AMR

This new book includes a chapter by Cóilín Nunan of @ASOAntibiotics on intensive farming and the antibiotic resistance crisis.
On #WorldFoodDay we reflect on our broken food system & the urgent need to transform it. Our book, ‘Regenerative Farming & Sustainable Diets’ explores the power of dietary shift & farming reform in creating a food system that benefits all. Find out more:

RT @humaneleagueuk: New report by @ASOAntibiotics shows supermarkets are failing to comply with new laws making it *illegal* to prop up poo…

@DomThePig I've repeatedly explained that the main concern is with resistant bacteria, not residues, but that residues can also be a concern. I have never claimed that food is full of antibiotics.

@DomThePig Misrepresenting someone's views is not civil. Refusing to withdraw false claims is not civil. VMD testing proves that some UK food has antibiotic residues above legal limits, as does some imported food. This does not mean that UK or imported food is "full of antibiotics".

@DomThePig I've already said that the main concern is antibiotic-resistant bacteria on/in food. Respecting withdrawal periods does not get rid of these. I've also said that residues are still a concern. I've NOT said that imported food is "full of antibiotics" as you've falsely claimed.

@DomThePig @BiteintoBritish I've not said the Dutch are better or that the EU will be. I've said that statutory antibiotic-use data collection is better. The Dutch have it, the EU will have it soon, the UK is against it. It does not follow from this that I believe that Dutch farming is better than UK's.

@DomThePig No. We did not say that they could be. If farmers respect withdrawal periods, then the foods will not be "full of antibiotics". We have not said that foreign farmers are breaking their own countries' laws. It's possible to overuse antibiotics, and respect withdrawal periods.

@DomThePig Antibiotic-resistant bacteria in/on food is the main concern, not antibiotic residues. Residues can also be a concern, but we said nothing about residues in this report and have never said that imported animal products are "full of antibiotics".

@DomThePig Supermarket policies have helped reduce UK farm antibiotic use by nearly 60%, which has in turn reduced the incidence of antibiotic-resistant bacteria in the food chain. Should do the same for imported food.

@DomThePig We said nothing about residues. It's possible to produce food with irresponsible antibiotic use, and to have no residues in the final product. It also doesn't say that imported food is produced with irresponsible use. It says that supermarket policies do not prohibit this.

@DomThePig @ciwf @marksandspencer @waitrose You may claim this. But it leads to non-subjective differences in disease and antibiotic use.

@DomThePig @ciwf @marksandspencer @waitrose The Alliance to Save Our Antibiotics was founded by the Soil Association, Compassion in World Farming and Sustain. We do not hid this fact. All UK organic, including OF&G, who are not Alliance members, have higher husbandry standards than Freedom Food, not just SA.
