The Gambia must confront its lack of will to implement critical recommendations from the 2019 review. Draconian laws like criminal defamation and false news still silence voices, while attacks on journalists go unpunished. It’s time to act! @UPRinfo @gmpressunion @globalfreemedia

➡ Drop the charges against Darbo. ➡ End the criminalization of journalism. @salieutaal @JobartehMadi @gmpressunion @Presidency_GMB @Gambia_MOJ @UNGambia @_AfricanUnion @AfrikParliament
#Gambia Journalist Darbo should celebrate the #IDUAI- International day for universal access to information-in his editorial staff and not in a remand center. Journalist *Justice Darbo* has been unjustly detained since Thursday, charged with "false publication and broadcasting" under *section 181A* of The Gambia’s Criminal Code. This outdated law, a remnant of the draconian speech repression through *Jammeh-era*, should not continue to be used to stifle press. Darbo is accused of publishing a story claiming inter others that President Barrow is no longer interested in being President of the Gambia and he has identified a successor /Election to happen in 2026/ It's time to *REPEAL* these repressive laws, once weaponized by the former regime, to protect journalists and the right to freedom of expression. As we mark *International Day for Universal Access to Information (IDUAI)* today, we call on President *Adama Barrow* to show his commitment to democracy: ➡ Drop the charges against Darbo. ➡ End the criminalisation of journalism. ➡ Foster an environment where journalists can inform the public without fear of detention, in thourough commitment to ethics and deontology. ➡ Continuous flow of information and tolerance of critics and independent opinions on public figures Civil alternatives—open debate and public discussion—should be prioritised over criminal sanctions to support a free and vibrant press. @gmpressunion @Kerrfatou @Presidency_GMB @UNGambia @standardgambia @Gambia_MOJ
