Short 2 year update: Which companies I work with changes from year to year. And in some sense DeFi has forced me to accept that mass adoption of blockchain technology is still far away. That being said, I still passionate about developing open platforms for safe transactions.

Over the past couple of weeks a lot of people have asked me what it is I'm working on. It's kinda difficult to explain because all the projects I work on share themes, but if you're not me, it would probably be difficult to see the thread. Following along won't be easy.

I got into blockchains because I was interested in using cryptography to create robust equitable virtual economies and I only care about monetary policy in service of this goal. This makes me an extreme outlier on Crypto Twitter, I don't have any monetary fixations.

I had to stop paying attention to MEV because even though I like many of the researchers and their previous work, no one could explain to me why they aren't working to simply eliminate MEV instead of "democratizing" it.

The problem with Ethereum dapps is "The Deep Stack Problem" It took decades of nerds making systems for each other to get to the stack complexity that made web1.0 possible. We are trying to make a categorically more complex stack, with categorically less skilled people.

How is it possible that we've switched from Yield Farming to NFTs so quickly? Why is the attention span of The Ethereum Community so short? How could it possibly be this short? I feel like I'm missing something basic.

@iamDCinvestor @omgnetworkhq We should just stop talking about sidechains. There are L2s, and L1 with trusted bridges to other L1s, if we have L1/L2 language, there is no reason to even talk about sidechains anymore.

I've been playing with DeFi stuff, but using strategies where almost all of the risk is in gas fees or in a very small subset of well tested/audited contracts failing. I think people like DeFi because they like gambling. Investing, trading/speculating, and gambling are distinct.

People don't understand how much the Ethereum pre-mine will forever effect the governance of any chain forked from that genesis block. People don't understand that early Bitcoin culture is not transitive and can't be duplicated. This why there are no @ln_zap like teams on ETH.

The more I read, "NFTs are a scam", the more I'm convinced that the problem isn't NFTs or "crypto", it's people believing that there is some 20th Century or later social activity that _isn't_ a scam. If it involves money changing hands between strangers, it's probably a scam.

This sort of hacking shares a lot of DNA with 80s/90s hacking. It's nearly impossible to have all of the domain expertise required to safely execute a "large scale attack", it's also nearly impossible to recruit enough defection-resistant partners.

It's funny how many times I've moved markets in crypto given that I'm broke.

I'm at a party with GameCube fans. Sadly, no Mario Kart.

Yo. Just because good devs are difficult to manage doesn't mean difficult to manage devs are good.

One of the best ads I've ever seen, I have no idea if these people are good at their jobs.

Why aren't billionaires working harder to reforest the world's deserts?

People who met me after 2006 have a more difficult time appreciating that I really quite strongly dislike money. I was designing cryptoeconomic systems to escape money, not accumulate more of it.

So, you want to reinvent insurance on the blockchain? Cool, you must first create a new metaphysics for cryptoassets, then locks, then modern financial instruments, 6 months tops. Actually only 4 months since your team of 25 year olds is energetic and unburdened by experience.

@bennjordan THERE IS A PALM PILOT IN THIS IMAGE. Did you actually find this layout productive?

My time in the crypto space is limited. Dealing with so much sociopathy and ignorance is extremely taxing. I feel like I'm in I Am Legend (the book not the movie). Sometimes I look at IT job postings; I don't see a way of developing the required patronage for my art.

I have inadvertently become a subject matter expert in the engineering efforts that create permissionless blockchains. It's an unfortunate side effect from me selecting projects almost entirely based on personal interest, as opposed to more reasonable things like upside potential

I've been saying this for years. The validator set must be strongly aligned with the issuer of the asset in ways that are not currently possible on any smart contract chain. Cosmos Hub is the closest to realizing this ideal, ETH1 + Optimism is in second. Who else is in the race?

If you're launching an asset consider picking your favorite platform: Elements, Ethereum, etc and launching your own chain, instead of waiting on Ethereum 2.0 (or many of its competitors with the same idea). Assets are centralized around the issuer you don't need decentralization

Providing communities with the agency to create their own economies is what I'm working on. Ideally, blockchains help a lot with this, but because of data availability issues, it's nearly impossible to meet that Ideal. End-users who wish to transact directly need watchtowers.

Why did I buy a bunch of source code and problems instead of a lambo?

Guess what, the protocol engineers who wrote TCP would not be useful in writing a react app, and vice versa, they aren't transitive skills. People had been hacking on cryptocurrencies for decades before Bitcoin. We should expect working PoS to take decades, not months.
