VICTORY: A judge struck down Pueblo's ban on syringe exchange programs.
These services can continue operating in city limits without fear of criminal charges.
‼️BREAKING‼️:
@GovofCO
has signed
#SB217
into law. Colorado becomes one of the first states in the country to END qualified immunity as part of this historic comprehensive police accountability bill.
This law emerged from the power of protest and a community that demanded change, from the boldness of Black and Brown leaders at the legislature, and willingness on both sides of the aisle to trust and listen to our Black and Brown leaders.

No one should have to endure what Ms. Sanchez did. Someone who is 8 months pregnant should not be in solitary confinement and should not be forced to labor in pain for hours without medical care.
We recognize and thank the families, survivors, advocates, protesters, non-profit organizations, businesses, and law firms who united to demand justice and change in our community. We will continue to fight this fight with you.
VICTORY: Boulder just became the 7th jurisdiction to win the right to counsel for fighting mass evictions. All people — regardless of their circumstances or background — should have access to safe and stable housing.

All abortion bans — whether in Alabama or Colorado — are political attacks. They are not about health or medicine. They are about controlling women and taking away decision-making power.

The Diversity Immigrant Visa Program gives a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for immigrants to build a future in the US.
However, Trump upended their lives after they had beaten the odds. These are the stories of four people still waiting for justice.
Dear Colorado Legislators and
@GovofCO
,
It is in your power to pass The Law Enforcement Integrity and Accountability Act intact (
#SB217
) and end qualified immunity.

Here are all the Colorado families and organizations that have united in support of this bill:
We are devastated and angered to learn of the five lives lost and the 18 people injured in a mass shooting at Club Q, an LGBTQ+ nightclub in Colorado Springs.
BREAKING: Today we released an investigative report detailing the inhumane conditions inside the ICE detention facility in Aurora. The report highlights several stories of death, abuse and medical neglect. Read the full report here:

It seems the only plan
@MayorHancock
and
@GovofCO
have come up with when it comes to our unhoused neighbors is to sweep them away every Wednesday. Last week the Capitol, this week Morey. This is not a plan — it's callous and violent. Do better.
I’m outside Morey Middle School in Capitol Hill where city officials just swept a large homeless encampment that had been here for months. Protesters are here sitting on the street, which is blocked off, in front of Denver police officers.
Denver’s school district has an opportunity to end the school to prison pipeline. Colorado students deserve more counselors in their schools, not police.
@TayAndersonCO
Following nationwide protests of racist policing, the Denver school district is expected to begin a conversation about the role of police officers in Denver schools — with some district leaders pushing to remove them entirely.
BREAKING: Today we sued Denver for police violence against protesters. No one is above the law. Police will be held accountable. For more on our lawsuit:
Prop 115 is an intentionally confusing ballot measure to ban abortion later in pregnancy with no exceptions for health or individual circumstances. It allows politics to dictate personal decisions that should be made by a pregnant person, their family, and doctor. Vote

BREAKING: Records reveal
@MayorHancock
,
@DenverSheriff
and
@DDPHE
collaborated to cover up the spike in coronavirus cases inside the Denver jail. The Mayor and Sheriff must be held accountable for misleading the public and putting lives at risk.
Remember in May when 316 covid cases in Denver's main jail disappeared from public reporting after local media reported on their outbreak? (thredd below icymi)
Newly released records show the Mayor's office & Sheriff coordinated the call for the change.
The passage of
#SB217
includes:
• The end of qualified immunity
• Requires officers to intervene to stop excessive force
• Outlaws chokeholds + use of deadly force on someone fleeing police
• Decertifies bad officers
• Protects protesters from police tear gas and projectiles
BREAKING: We’re suing Colorado Springs, Colorado Springs police officers, and the FBI for obtaining unconstitutional warrants to search the Chinook Center, a local nonprofit, and housing activist Jacqueline “Jax” Armendariz Unzueta.

BREAKING: We will be live at the Capitol at 4pm as legislators introduce The Law Enforcement Integrity and Accountability Act, which we hope will keep all law enforcement accountable to the people they are entrusted to serve and protect.

The harms of eviction run deep. That's why we're fighting alongside the No Eviction Without Representation campaign and housing justice advocates to challenge unjust evictions. With or without a global pandemic, fair access to housing is a legal right.

passed out of the legislature and is now headed to

's desk. Once signed, it will make Colorado the 22nd state in the U.S. to abolish the death penalty.
On June 1, Aurora Police shot and killed Jor'Dell Richardson, a Black child that had just finished 8th grade.
His family struggled to get details and body cam footage. As they mourned the death of their child, APD dragged their feet.

BREAKING: We filed a lawsuit on behalf of unhoused Boulder residents, taxpayers, and

challenging camping bans that prohibit the use of blankets, tents, and any cover other than clothing, no matter the weather conditions.
UPDATE: A Boulder district court judge denied Boulder’s motion to dismiss our lawsuit. It now moves forward.
In the lawsuit, we’re arguing that the state constitution prohibits police from enforcing the “camping ban” against unhoused people unable to access indoor shelter.
VICTORY: The fight for reproductive rights and justice is successful when we stick together. Thanks to your efforts, health needs will continue to drive important medical decisions — not politics. Read the full release:

Colorado needs stronger data privacy laws to ensure state data isn’t shared or purchased by ICE. We must also hold institutions accountable for perpetuating a climate of fear among our immigrant neighbors when trying to access our justice system.

NEW: Polis said his office will examine what the state can do regarding the investigation into the death of Elijah McClain, a 23-year-old killed by Aurora police last year in a case that has drawn national attention
In 3 months, jail populations dropped to levels not seen in almost 30 years. COVID-19 jail depopulation proved we know how to quickly, dramatically & safely free thousands of people behind bars. The time to build a better CO is now. Read our report:
Colorado is expanding access to driver's licenses for undocumented residents. All DMV offices will now offer free appointments to get one.
This is a good step forward. Our ability to drive shouldn't depend on our immigration status.
In a final ruling, Judge Eric Bentley barred El Paso Sheriff Bill Elder from jailing people beyond their release for ICE. Ruling confirms that CO sheriffs have no legal authority to enforce federal immigration law. CO sheriffs swear an oath to the Constitution, not to ICE.

Every year, more than 9,000 Denver families face eviction and the potential of becoming homeless. The
@NEWRDenver
campaign is working to help Denver families stay in their homes by ensuring equal and fair access to legal representation for those facing eviction.
Apologies are insults without systemic change. Aurora's culture will be reset when we divest from law enforcement and reinvest in the Black and Brown communities they unjustly target.
Prisons are overcrowded with people who pose no threat to the community. Ronald Johnson is a 62-year-old grandfather who changed his life after being convicted of non-violent offenses related to substance abuse. He should not die in prison. No one should.
In the midst of a public health crisis
@SenatorHick
has voted to block stimulus payments to undocumented immigrants. This is particularly cruel, given how many immigrants have put their lives at risk for us — including the 1.7 million immigrant medical and health care workers.
Once again, Coloradans have made it clear that private medical decisions should be made without political interference. There is nothing reasonable about restricting access to essential medical care — not now, not ever.
#NoOn115
After more than three years of litigation, the federal district court in Colorado agreed with the ACLU that ICE has been repeatedly violating the Freedom of Information Act (FOIA).
Thank you, Colorado Senators and Representatives, for passing the Law Enforcement Integrity Act with strong bipartisan support.
Thank you, Colorado, for taking action and demanding justice for the Black and Brown families who lost loved ones to police violence.
