A few days ago I was released from HMP Bronzefield after a month on remand. I have been overwhelmed by the love and support I have received since. Thank you so much to everyone that supported me whilst in prison and on release. This movement has so much love, joy and hope.

After release from custody today I was given bail conditions not to protest on any road in the UK. Marching is a legal form of protest and has always been a part of our democratic process. Our freedom and democracy is under threat from this government.

I was prepared for backlash after this action, I did not expect so much would be focus our queerness. Queer liberation has not been won in this country or around the world. Yes, I have pink hair and pronouns and I’m proud.

Earlier this year the government was found guilty of not meeting their legally binding net zero agreements. Yet my friends are in prison for demanding the government do what all experts advise to avert complete climate catastrophe: end all new fossil fuel licences.

What makes a 21 year old so desperate they are willing to go prison? The short answer: science. I will never forget the first time I read the IPCC report and understood the reality of the future we are heading towards.

We cannot let their sacrifice be in vain. We have to keep resisting. If prison sentences are the worst they can throw at us we will never be stopped. We will not be intimidated by harsh punishment. Because we are fighting for our lives, how could we stop?

It is not all fear and rage. Although release is bittersweet knowing my friends are still in prison. These people are the bravest, most loving and caring people I know. Making the ultimate sacrifice of their freedom, some careers or studies, fighting for our planet and people.

I hope we end apathy to the biggest crisis humanity has ever faced.
I hope the government act to protect its people and listen to their scientists.
I hope we stop deadly new fossil fuel licences.
I hope we learn to love our planet and each other.

A year of refusing to be a bystander while we stand to lose all we know and love.
A year of civil resistance and proving the people have the power.

On our current trajectory the only future I see for myself is one of mass famine, climate disasters, more pandemics and societal collapse. Once you engage emotionally and intellectually with the future we are facing, you cannot switch the fear off. It’s shattering.

I don’t think the government should listen to a 21 year olds opinion on how we avoid climate catastrophe. Leading climate scientists say we can have no new fossil fuel licences. The UN say it. The IEA say it. The WHO say it. The World Bank say it.

Transition to renewable energy when renewables are 9x cheaper. Insulate British homes instead of billionaires pockets which would roughly half heating bills. Subsidise and nationalise public transport. Adequately tax billionaires energy companies. These are no-brainer steps.
