one of my profs during phd used to say “you can drive a truck through the holes in any given paper. so you look for what you *can* learn instead.” and being the smartass grad students we used to think driving that truck was fun. after so many years, i now appreciate her wisdom >>

proposal: why don’t journals accept/evaluate papers in a simple, generic pdf format at first submission and early revisions, and only impose their unique format requirements after conditional acceptance? would save us all time but still have papers published in desired format.

What's strange is that it's supposed to be surprising/problematic that we arrive at different results under different models making different assumptions, using different methods that also make different assumptions. It's almost as if our inference depends on the model/method.

ok my final verdict: i absolutely abhor the “methods and materials at the end of the paper” journal format. it didn’t make sense while writing it, still doesn’t while reading. it is so unnatural to talk about results before having introduced methods and ruins the logical flow.

At the end of every semester, students thank me for not assigning a textbook. If you haven’t before, consider whether you can teach just as well or better without one (I sure do). Or use an open access textbook instead of asking them to pay hundreds of dollars.

This 2019 article by Feest makes a strong case against the usefulness of direct and conceptual replication studies (specifically in psych) as well as against the existence of a "replication" crisis. It's sharp, incisive, on point. Five key points:

Pls tell me I’m not the only one who notices that in academic threads men’s comments always get more likes/shares than women’s. Part of it, I think, is many women in the thread use “likes” for acknowledgement and men don’t. Part of it is that women’s comments are just invisible.

Just a thought I'm revisiting: There's nothing intuitive about statistics. Trying to make it intuitive to masses bypassing all the learning that needs to precede it does more harm than good in the aggregate. Intuition is fallible & can't/shouldn't replace hard work or knowledge.
@zerdeve
Berna Devezer

Intuitiveness is not a measure of whether something makes scientific sense, is useful, or is well written. Intuition takes years of hard work, deep thinking, troubleshooting to develop, and even then it's not infallible. Reading research needs just as much rigor as doing it.

I think it's worth trying to critique papers, however bad we think they are, without snark, condescension, mean jokes. Meanness toward colleagues makes our already troublesome academic culture even more alienating and deflating rather than screaming rigorous science.

OK a little subtweet: It’s a bit gross that a colleague would liken himself to my father and feel disappointed by me. What the freaking entitlement?! I’d also like to think that my father, when he was alive, didn’t throw tantrums when his work was critiqued.

Theory matters. Models matter. Assumptions and assumption violations matter. Methods are not equivalent in their assumptions or statistical guarantees. We do not make inference in a vacuum. That's also why reproducibility doesn't mean what people think it means. All in the paper.

Prereg: Any minute now journals will start announcing that they’ll fast track anti-racism research and in the next months we’ll see a surge of sloppy race research primarily from white male academics.

“Philosophers long made a mummy of science.” Opening words of Hacking’s Representing and Intervening. Maybe this’ll be a thread too. Maybe not. Only if it inspires interesting thoughts and puzzling questions 😊
