STARTING A NEW COMPANY IS A CREATIVE PROCESS.
Every detail, even the name, is part of this journey.
As with all creative endeavors, it’s crucial to be selective about whose feedback you consider. Accepting feedback from everyone will strip away the uniqueness critical for

Over the break I wrote down a draft for how I aspire to act in my business dealings:
1. Be discerning in your commitments, and honor them aggressively.
2. Have the courage to follow your intuition, especially when it does not enhance social status.
3. Be discerning about whom

It’s wild that Morris Chang had no equity in TSMC when he founded it. He bought equity along the way. TSMC now 10th largest company in world and Morris a billionaire. Hard mode.

I'm so grateful I've gotten yet another chance to beat my brain tumour. Thank you, Dr Athar Enam and Aga Khan Karachi for a skillful awake craniotomy procedure. To family & friends for their endless prayers. May you and yours stay safe. This is me crawling back into words:
If you start a startup that can only reach users by doing deals with big companies, the default outcome will be that you run out of money and die while waiting for them to make up their minds.

I have an idea for a new art movement.
Modern internet is full of photos that focus on visual aesthetics of a person. But that does not represent the true nature of the person. What is their character? A photo cannot convey that.

Exec hiring is basically about buying a very specialized form of experience to up level your execution. Given experience, my most useful heuristic in evaluating executives are track record and clarity of thought.

I don't see all app logic going to LLMs.. I think we'll end up defining some kind of abstraction for llms vs built on top like the difference between kernel space and user space..
Been reflecting on this and think it's the reason FAANG tech culture is devolving into general antipathy and entitlement. Hang out with doctors or artists and SV tech culture attitudes just seem unhinged in comparison..
An opera singer sees the joy on audience faces when she sings. A doctor sees gratitude when she heals a patient. This gives work meaning.
A software engineer sees lines of code. It’s too abstract to have meaning. This is a problem.
Dealing with bullies:
Don’t show weakness.
Build coalitions.
Do the work to know your position.
Punch a bully on the nose and he becomes your peer.
Bullies are often deeply insecure.

2 small thoughts on loyalty:
1) it's a long-term investment. it seems sub-optimal in the short-term but if you make bets on the right principles it pays off long-term.
2) you only realize the value of loyalty after the pain of disloyalty.

Jobs are evolving: In the next decade more people should focus on decentralized physical work like construction, carpentry, and mechanical trades.
Centralized physical roles have always been prone to automation, and AI is reshaping cognitive jobs.
There is already a shortage
Academia breeds political in-fighting because of its structure. Unlike a military org. it is unstructured (generates the best ideas but causes informal influence). Unlike a fast growing company there are a fixed number of opptys. for grants and tenure (breeds zero-sum thinking).

deciding factor of a startup’s success is the shipping velocity.
Companies have no long term moat, the only moat is a fast shipping culture.
SMBs are the most hit right now. # of bankruptcies will give us best indicator whether the economy will be able to return to normal post-COVID. It’s a very lagging indicator but so far only 18% more Chapter 11s in 2020 vs. same period in 2019.

The strongest engineering DNA comes from a consumer background
The strongest marketing DNA comes from a SMB background
The strongest sales DNA comes from an enterprise background
@zaydenam
Haha I appreciate the support! I'd caveat my statement with: this is necessary but insufficient condition. I just can't think of a great company that doesn't ship fast, but ofc there are a lot of companies ship fast but not great. 🙂
Observation: with current software and market trends there are an order of magnitude greater "mini-VC" opportunities in AI. Where the opportunity is not enough to underwrite a classic VC $1B+ outcome but is at least $100M+.
These teams will raise a smaller amount of capital, hit
