Once, in a workshop, a writer asked me define “arepa” in the text. So for the rest of the term, I asked her to define “toast,” and “bread,” every time she mentioned it in her own writing.

This was the screenshot that told me Olivia Wilde was absolutely correct to leave this man. From the scare quotes around "punished" to the hashtag.
In 2014 I got stopped in Chicago by police, asking if I was a migrant. I said I was a citizen. The cop asked for my papers, which I did not have. He let me go, but since then, I carry my passport card at all times. My citizenship is always under question.
SPOILER: I AM ONE OF THESE ARTISTS!!!
So honored and so grateful to the

I don’t know. I think cultural appropriation doesn’t work both ways. I think my using the work of dominant culture is not appropriation. Like... my quoting or using Emerson can’t be, as the power dynamic is in its favor, as a dominant text.
"In her coatdress, Dr. Biden looked comfortable and pulled together. She looked like everyone’s teacher: familiar but also a little bossy."
How differently that would have read if they'd used "familiar but also in charge."

I've been at war with italics for years. You should see people FREAK out when I don't italicize a word in a different language. Like... how will they know it's foreign if it's not a little slanted to the right?? Haha. My editors LOVE me.
All right Twitter, why does Market District Giant Eagle think these mini-quiches are not straight? Is it the fact that they're crustless? Is it the strawberry??

yesterday, in nonfiction everyone (lawyers, publishers, etc.) says “change identifying details.” In NONFICTION.
This is the problem with separating genres. People are not learning the rules that apply to all writing.

I was denied a job because I had an arrest, not even a conviction, on my record and they also gave me a booklet on how to be a “better” person according to their codes of conduct.
My desktop computer died today, and I used the last of the grant money I got from the Pittsburgh Foundation (
@PittsburghFdn
) to buy a new one, and anyway I’m crying, because I didn’t have to dip into my savings or my family’s $ to do that.
Someone just sent me an email calling me "a Steelers-loving, pseudo-socialist immigrant posing as an intellectual."
I'm thinking of making that my official bio.
Several people I know that can quote Butler and Baldwin have also committed micro-aggressions against me. My friends even.
So let’s not pretend any of us are clean of this, are in the clear, are beyond racism.
Myself included.
Every year I tell my husband that I'm done judging book prizes, and every year, as the books begin to arrive, he shoots me the worst looks.
Anyway, I got my first USPS notification. The books are coming.
Pray for me.
I won a thing and will be attending a gala with a fancy dress and I’m so excited but also really nervous because I need to get a maternity gown and omg what!?
I have a book to read, three essays to edit, and three essays to write in the next 48 hours.
The moment you realize that your horrific approach to college actually prepared you for something.
I’ve been laid off from my job as a columnist for the LA Times today, with 100 of my best colleagues. It’s a dark day. I was the only Latina columnist for the opinion desk. Trump is looming & I’m author of Hatemonger. If you're hiring, I’m at jeangue619

How will Mayim handle the Adriana (aydree-ah-nah) vs Audrey (aw-dree) pronunciation debacle? Will she succeed? Or will we both be called "awdree-ah-nah" to everyone's confusion? TUNE IN TO FIND OUT!!!!!!
The Press Club of Western Pennsylvania has named me a finalist for "Excellence in Written Journalism" for writing Editorials (mostly about books!)!!!
So that's exciting!
Airport pickups are such a show of love. Doesn’t matter if it is romantic or platonic. Anyone who picks you up from the airport that you aren’t paying to do so, actually loves you.
If you expect me to pay $16 for a burrito, it better have GOLD and all the flavors of my childhood, such that I burst into tears upon consuming. Because otherwise... WTF.
Look... my kids are dual citizens. If my uterus-having child decides to terminate a pregnancy, she is a citizen of a country that will protect her rights as a woman and human. I'm just... disappointed that it's not the country of her birth.
So Gary F on my flight to Chicago, sitting in the row in front of me, proudly declared to his row mates (who laughed) that since he moved to the west coast, he’s “learning Spanish to talk to the illegals.”
I’m still shaking with rage.
Having now written several award citations and 40-50 word book reviews, I think my secret talent might be distilling a whole book into two sentences.
Unless, of course, I wrote it.
Sometimes I get so emotional when I read my own work, I have to run away from it.
It’s kinda dumb, but also kinda perfect.
I always say that I write for an audience of one: me. I write the kinds of things I need to read.
Nurse: Do you feel more or less depressed than usual?
Me: I’m a woman of color in the United States.
N: So anxious and depressed, but that’s normal?
Me: YES!
Is sending an email at 5AM bullying someone? Like... I send emails at all hours. I thought that was the point. I send an email whenever and you read it whenever.
Susan is useless. Susan learned nothing.
Debates should all be moderated by Pauly Shore at this point.
I realize that reference dates me. I stand by it.

I spent all morning writing about Aztec mythology. I'm so down to watch this soap opera, or write for this soap opera, or play an Aztec princess in this soap opera. Mostly I just want to be involved.
I like to remind myself that I am the first audience for my book. I am the first reader. And my work is written with that audience in mind first and foremost. I want to write the books that I've needed to read my whole life.
A horror story.
A writer opens up latest draft of book. Writes one line.
Unable to continue, they then open their browser. They navigate to Twitter.
Boo.

but that's not true. There are Filipino people that live Mexico. There are Japanese people that live in Mexico.
Do you not watch films that only feature white, American actors (some are even filmed in Mexico).
Dude. You're racist. Deja tus pendejadas.
As someone who wasn’t able to pay off her undergraduate student loans until after she got married, I have this to say to everyone who got some loan forgiveness today.
Good for you! I’m so glad that the dark cloud hanging over you has been somewhat decreased!
If you know anyone that's successfully finished writing a book, congratulate them. Seriously, right now, go tell them how amazing they are.
BECAUSE THEY ARE AMAZING.
“Si se puede” does not mean “yes, we can.” It means “yes, it can be done.”
And finally, yes, something was done.
Here’s to the kids who have been holding their breaths for the last few years. Here’s to them, for finally getting to exhale.

Half my step count today is me walking into a room, forgetting why I’m there, walking back to where I started, remembering, then starting the whole process over again.
Sometimes I feel like I have lost that undergrad energy, but then I built a pretty decent looking website in one day, so maybe it’s still here, baby, underneath the ennui.
My favorite person in the world right now is Adriana of the Past, who got me a flight that leaves at noon from the west coast, and who paid a little extra for all comforts possible.
Adriana of the Past, I love you. You take such good care of me.
I keep seeing all these SUPER WOKE posts from a person that took every opportunity in graduate school to tell me how unfair it was that I got a fellowship reserved for minorities and how her whiteness was used against her. I’m really unsure how/what to feel/say.
The nice thing about going to a store in real life is that they don't send you emails for the rest of your life because you bought a t-shirt there once.
