LOL.
Very amusing that
@yorkuniveristy
&
@rhondalenton
constantly promote their DEDI strategy, but when it comes to putting it into action… they silence their students.

ATTN York U Community! Rhonda Lenton (RL), President of York University, is up for renewal. Let’s review York under her leadership, shall we? A thread.
The YFS has passed a motion of Non-Confidence in the Rhonda Lenton Administration and the Board of Governors. We urge the York administration to return to the bargaining and bargain in good faith to bring this strike to an end.
Enough is enough!

BREAKING NEWS: WE WON. In response to the Student Choice Initiative (SCI), along with
@CFSON
, we took the provincial government to court and we were SUCCESS in repealing this UNLAWFUL policy.
The York Federation of Students is deeply concerned by the statement put out by Rhonda Lenton regarding anti-Black racism. It reflects neither the views of the Black communities on our campuses nor what should be the community standard for fighting anti-Blackness. (1/2)
It is not enough to simply condemn anti-Black racism. We know that solutions begin with listening to and learning from those who face anti-Black racism, and by standing next to those fighting for a more just world. Read our full statement:

. We, the YFS, strongly urge the York University Administration to support students and return to the bargaining table with urgency. If the University bargains in good faith & offers a fair deal, instead of intimidating students, the strike can end.
Students are being told that they must cross picket lines, or fail. This is NOT the case.
1. Make your professor aware of Senate Strike Policy 2.2
2. Email your prof stating that you will not be crossing the picket. (1/2)

Our provincial government is about to make some big cuts to transit. There is a proposed end to the $1.50 co-fare discount for GO and TTC trips. This would hurt York students and our community at large. Join us at 12 pm at the YorkU subway station to flyer!
Thank you
@YorkUPresident
for providing an update on a meeting organized and conducted by the YFS and other unions on campus with our transit providers. We look forward to being included in your conversations going forward to witness your best efforts first hand!
TW: Suicide
Perhaps they’re afraid of the fact that on this same
@cbcfifth
episode, a Black professor employed by York University stated that the anti-Blackness he experienced at the hands of RL’s admin drove him to the point of attempting suicide.
We've reached out to York Administration numerous times in the past regarding advocacy efforts for BIPOC students, to no avail. If you’re truly committed to listening to those who face anti-Black racism, you can find our thoughts in your inbox or at . (2/2)
When a prof was xenophobic toward a student living under duress from a coup & military violence across Myanmar, Rhonda’s response was to reiterate her “commitment” to “upholding & promoting the values of respect, equity, diversity, & inclusion.” When have we heard this before?🤔
Attacks on racialized bodies at York continues. When it came to the incidents of Nov 20th, students were verbally & physically assaulted by non-community members for protesting for their right to feel safe. Even more shockingly, RL was aware of it and did nothing to prevent it.

Rhonda’s “commitment” allegedly extends to anti-Black racism on campus. Notably, Rhonda didn’t want to interview with

Supporting students isn’t a priority for RL. In her 1st year of leadership, RL managed to commit to the longest strike in Canadian history at a post-sec institution - disrupting the learning conditions of students + the working conditions of her staff & faculty for over 4 months.
RL isn’t just an expert at union busting, she’s an expert at stifling student activism too. During the 2018 strike, she took students to court for protesting and decided to appeal the decision when she lost. What kind of President sues her own students for voicing their concerns?
It’s a beautiful Friday and the YFS is sitting in provincial court! We are attending our court hearing along with
@CFSFCEE
and
@CFSON
regarding our case to REPEAL the STUDENT CHOICE INITIATIVE
On top of marginalized students being assaulted for peacefully protesting against non-community members in 2019, RL hired a retired Justice whose report claimed race was not a deciding factor in the incidents of that day, after claiming York’s “commitment to diversity &...”
Another area where RL cut corners is cybersecurity. A cyber attack in May concerned students & staff when their personal info was jeopardized. This has put serious doubts in the safety and security of York students during their online studies.
In response to the experiences from this episode, RL stated, “the University has accepted the finding of an independent external reviewer who determined that the allegation of anti-Black racism was unfounded.” This is just the most recent instance in a long pattern of dismissal.
CUPE 3903 has voted to commence legal strike action as of Monday. Unless a deal is reached bw CUPE3903 and the
#YorkU
administration over the weekend, the strike will begin on Monday morning.

Speaking of inaccessibility, Metrolinx gave the University the opportunity to bring buses back to the Keele campus as a result of student demands, but RL and her administration prioritized MONEY over student support.
Let’s see how RL has struggled to address real life issues of anti-Black Racism @ York! After 8 months of meeting with the YFS & student leaders, RL and VP Cote-Meek provided vague answers surrounding the implementation of the Anti-Black Racism Framework.

The TTC is planning to increase fares in 2019. Join TTCriders for a rally outside City Hall to deliver a giant card with our demands for LOWER fares and better service.
The $ definitely doesn’t go toward accessibility! Despite students being vocal about their concerns, even during a snowstorm, accessibility was not a priority. Students who use mobility aids COULD NOT safely get around campus or to their homes as a result of unclear paths.
The York University Strike continues.

Every step of the way, RL & her administration refused to accept any of the strike demands, even after vital strike issues were reduced. This included the refusal to reinstate the 700+ Unit 3 jobs cut from the previous collective agreement.
“We still have cops on our campuses that brutalize students... racist profs that say the N-word in classes,” said Azinwi Kien, president of the York Federation of Students & Black Caucus National Executive Rep, Ontario Racialized Constituency Chair.
But what RL isn’t vague about is profiting off students. A not so fun fact: The majority (55.6%) of voters on the Board of Governors are from a corporate background, the largest percentage in Canada. With only 2 student positions, the lack of student support is unsurprising.
It’s clear that
@YorkUniversity
's words don’t line up with their actions. When students and student leaders speak out about an ongoing genocide, they are *swiftly* silenced.

This university has a long history of stifling students’ ability to organize. Whether it’s building a kiosk in the middle of Vari, or erecting fences where students demonstrate, this university will continue to silence its students when given the opportunity.

So where does the money go? Under RL’s leadership, the City of Toronto threatened to shut off water to York’s Keele campus due to significant unpaid bills.
On October 12th, the three students’ unions at YorkU put out a statement of solidarity with Palestine. Since then, the university has condemned the statement and has threatened our autonomy as students’ unions.
