Mind is blown. Soul is fed. Heart is full. The HHMI Gilliam community and conference was everything I dreamed of and more. Honored to see my and @kevinmawright’s name in the HHMI campus hall. Until next year!

Echoing others: these 3 schools were deliberately picked for a reason. Seattle Children’s Hospital IDC is 95%…but the optics wouldn’t look good if NIH included that in this graphic
Last year, $9B of the $35B that the National Institutes of Health (NIH) granted for research was used for administrative overhead, what is known as “indirect costs.” Today, NIH lowered the maximum indirect cost rate research institutions can charge the government to 15%, above what many major foundations allow and much lower than the 60%+ that some institutions charge the government today. This change will save more than $4B a year effective immediately.

@hubermanlab What do overhead/indirect costs go to? I sense there is a “supposed to go to xyz” list that never gets accomplished and/or a lack of transparency from universities, hence the discontent with NIH funding but it would help to know where it goes

@hubermanlab Wouldn’t this be a slippery slope as this would make smaller universities collateral when the “pedestrian work” gets weeded? There is good basic science research there as well and I’m not optimistic we can get it back if it’s nixed.
