Received my @daylightco DC-1 last week. Returning it this week 🥲 Building hardware is fucking hard and I respect @AnjanKatta for taking this on. But here are my honest thoughts: getting it was long and annoying. - we ordered it in june 24 and received it in jan 25 - we had to pay a €100 customs fee in spain. - europe being europe? maybe, but would have been more pleasant if daylight had stated clearly that the device costs $800 including shipping and customs. what about the product? - feels like a larger, heavier, slightly smarter kindle. - I have the substack app on it so i thought that'd be awesome, and it is, but there are other tools that send substack articles to your kindle and that don't cost $700 what about the screen? - paper-like screen, but it's not e-ink. - there's this weird glare when it's flat on your desk and you're viewing it at an angle (they way you'd write in a book) - ironically the glare is really bad with sun light or some other light source like a lamp - writing is cool but realistically, it's never going to replicate the intuitiveness of pen and paper for the price, it should be a hell yes, but it isn't. doesn't replace any existing device but just adds to the entourage of devices accompanying us everywhere.

i'm torn - on the one hand, i do believe in the "just ship it" mindset, but it's 2025 and shipping WIP software isn't cute anymore? especially with AI making it so easy to go from 0-1, there's been a flood of new products and consumers seem to have a higher quality bar great piece by justin jackson, as always - 2024 me def feels attacked, but that's a good thing :)

maybe i'm missing something here but with open source alternatives to most software + @windsurf_ai + a little bit of tinkering you could locally run personalized versions of many (not all) of your fav tools and save $$? cc @_mohansolo

often wonder where humanity would be today if the library of alexandria hadn't been burnt down apparently jury's still out on who caused it
The sheer state of development of Egypt and Sumeria are strong circumstantial evidence that the history of civilization is far longer than previously believed. What we think of as the dawn of civilization is likely actually the peak of a forgotten #longhistory.

a lot of hype around service-as-software, but little discussion about the tools that help service providers (non technical humans like myself) build software -- companies like @windsurf_ai, @boltdotnew, etc silently selling shovels :)
