On B.C.'s coast, an invasion of the European green crab is happening below the waves. Their destructive impact on nearshore ecosystems is setting off alarm bells— but Hakai scientists are deploying a new tool making it easier to detect these invaders 🦀

The folks at @hakaimagazine published a great photo-essay featuring images from our long-term plankton survey. Check it out... Springtime delivers the world’s tiniest zoo babies.

Scores of scientific experts and students clambered over rocks and under logs, squelched in mud and tidal pools, and dove into frigid water in a race to discover, collect and document thousands of species during the recent Quadra Island BioBlitz.

@RaphsWall @TimRawlings4 @TheBugChicks No gold-coating, we've just been placing a reasonably dry sample on a mount. So it's very quick and easy, but at the expense of having lower resolution/magnification compared to a proper SEM. The people we borrowed it from use it for education and outreach.

@TheBugChicks @TimRawlings4 I guess 'somewhat' portable would be more accurate :). It fits in the trunk of a car, but not in a backpack. (see below, scissors for scale).
