A debate about marital rape has been ongoing on Twitter for few days now, and it's deeply concerning that, under current Nigerian law, a husband cannot be prosecuted for raping his wife. This effectively means that a husband is legally permitted to have sex with his wife regardless of her consent, at any time and in any manner, even if she explicitly withholds her consent. While the law is clear, I must emphasize that morally, if you engage in any form of sexual activity with someone who has clearly expressed their unwillingness to participate, you are committing rape and ọlọhun lo ma ba ti ẹ jẹ 'No', 'stop', 'I don't want to', and 'I'm not in the mood' are all valid reasons for a man to immediately cease any sexual advances and respect his partner's boundaries. If a woman is unwilling to engage in sexual activity for any reason, it is not acceptable to coerce or force her into it. Paying a bride price does not confer ownership or entitlement to sexual favours on you as a man and marriage does not negate the requirement for mutual consent in sexual encounters. It is imperative that we hold our lawmakers accountable and advocate for revision and amendment of outdated laws. Specifically, marital rape must be recognized and prosecuted as a serious offence. This is a critical issue that feminist advocates should prioritize. Lastly, if your wife is denying you of sex without reason, it’s justified to dissolve the marriage and or if your faith permits, you may choose to marry another wife. However, no moral code condones forcing oneself on someone who has clearly expressed their unwillingness to engage in intimacy. Before citing your sexual right as a husband, consider this: how would you feel if your daughter or sister come home to complain to you that her husband had forced himself upon her? Maybe, just maybe if we viewed every woman through the same lens as our mothers, sisters, or daughters, our perspectives and opinions on gender based issue would be more balanced and empathetic.

Allah tests people in different ways. The latest one for our beloved sister is very painful. For someone who has been under constant tests for the past 7 years. We pray Allah grants her ease & the happiness he promised quickly and not delayed any longer. Please say a prayer.

This wouldn't have happened under Shariah law. Imam Al-Qurtubi in his Tafseer provided evidences that point to the fact that, If the father has no financial means at all, although the obligation to provide support remains, but becomes conditional on the availability of resources. This was well explained under the Tsfserr of the verse: "Let a man of wealth spend from his wealth, and he whose provision is restricted, let him spend from what Allah has given him. Allah does not charge a soul except [according to] what He has given it." (Quran 65:7). In fact, if the father is completely incapable of providing the child support, it becomes permissible for other family members (like paternal relatives) or the Muslim community (through zakat or charitable funds) to step in temporarily until he has a means. Which other religion has such leniency in its teachings? Which other manmade law has such excellent plan for the family laws? Ikenna would have been alive today if such laws have been followed.
