Sports, like the real world, teaches you that effort+production= rewarded Seems obvious but most of youth is spent learning that outcomes can be achieved without it. Grades can be fixed with asking for extra credit. Universities can be gotten into when certain boxes are checked. Jobs can be given because of connections. To make it to C-Suite you must have a multi decade history of actual performance. Performance that is earned through self agency, grit, and production. Aka lessons learned through sports.

I enjoy the holidays because they let me spend time with, and learn from people outside baseball. There is a common denominator amongst the most successful….. consistent, unglamorous effort. The guys with the best health eat the same meals, and do the same lifts for years. The best dads are the ones who are present in their kids' daily lives. Driving to school, going to important events, consistent communication. The best businessmen work on solving one problem for decades. There are no shortcuts and certainly no hacks You can’t lose 30 pounds in a day by eating a specific meal or doing a special workout You can’t repair a relationship with your kid with one gift or grand gesture You won’t get wealthy working 15 hours one day, and 4 every day after that. The same applies to ⚾️. No special drill, cue, or event will make you a significantly better player than the day before. But boring, daily, quiet, deliberate work for years will get you where you want to be.

@pjonesbaseball It requires a level of physical and mental consistency over a long period of time. It counteracts with the instant result society we’ve all grown accustomed to.

@KySportsRadio If a kid takes college credits in HS and leverages this eligibility system, he could leave an NCAA school with a PHD.

@JeffPassan Players/Teams are going to prioritize the characteristics with the highest probability of success. If different outcomes are wanted then the incentives need to change as well.

High School players need to unemotionally asses recruiting class size and roster history when making a decision on a college. 15 guys in your recruiting class with a reputation of 50 guys on the fall roster. By 12/1…..16 of those players are gone. Do you think the majority of those players will be JR’s & SR’s or unproven Freshman? Make calculated decisions on what’s best for your future. Not what will look best on your instagram.
I had hoped this was just a rumor but here we go: 34-man Baseball rosters will be declared on 12/1. Thoughts: -This is materially worse than our current roster mgnt system... and the current system has huge issues. -We will be cutting massive #s of players right before finals.
