We have been quietly working away in the background on a groundbreaking project with @stcatherinespsy. We have been working with Primaries 5, 6 and 7, teaching them BSL every week. Working on basic sign language, deaf awareness and many different topics. The children have soaked it all in. This is the first time this has been done and is a huge step in the right direction for schools to not just have BSL taught in them but to have deaf BSL tutors leading it. This is a long-term commitment from the school. We even had a chance to chat to @EducationScot about the project and provided feedback about the benefits. Please share this far and wide. We want as many people to know about this as possible and are happy to chat about how to make it possible #BSL#BSLinschools #Deafled #Languages#Languages #Languages

Hi everyone, we still have a few spaces left for these sessions and they are going fast. Please feel free to pass this on, tag or share We have decided to offer festive sign language sessions to schools again this year. We will be teaching various vocabulary, the names of the reindeer, decorations, the food on the table at Christmas dinner and many more festive signs. At the end of each session, the pupils involved will be able to express opinions around all things Christmas and have a greater understanding of BSL linguistics. We are offering these sessions to East Renfrewshire, Renfrewshire and Glasgow at the moment. If you are from another area please let me know and we will try our best to accommodate. Prior to the above Christmas section of BSL, we would first have to give a basic understanding of both BSL and its importance. To do this, we would collaborate with the pupils teaching them about Deaf awareness, Deaf culture and Deaf history. We would then teach them how to fingerspell (BSL alphabet), how to ask questions, and to give responses. We will touch on BSL grammar and explain the structure to the pupils, so that they will have a much easier time following instructions when it comes to the Christmas segment. This first part will be our building blocks for the next section. After this, we would then move onto teaching them Christmas based vocabulary as mentioned before. Teaching them how express themselves using BSL to sign about Christmas dinner, presents, toys, decorations and so much more. They would be able to have a conversation where they could ask others, their opinions on all things Christmas as well as respond with their own. All fully in BSL. The session will last 1 hour and we can collaborate with up to 30 pupils (or one class) at a time. We are happy to accommodate multiple sessions if you are a larger school. These sessions will be suitable for ages 8 +. We are happy to offer a simplified sessions to pupils younger than this. We feel that this would be a fun introduction to BSL and that we hopefully inspire the pupils to think more about this beautiful culture and language. These sessions will be suitable for ages 8 +. We are happy to offer a simplified sessions to pupils younger than this. The hour’s session will cost £90. If your school may be interested in us visiting then please contact us at westscotlandbsl@gmail.com
