One finding that programs should be particularly aware of: over half of residents had concerns about surgical competency upon completion of residency due to #covid19 disruption in training. This was (predictably) more pronounced in high-covid regions

Our county hospital is officially back in #covid surge protocol while Reagan in Westwood is back to allowing patient visitors—socioeconomic disparities in this health crisis are not just headlines: one illustration of larger systemic issues

This should be expanded. E.g. Bill Withers ‘Lovely Day’ when a retained stent is not encrusted. Thoughts?

Hopkins estimates we need 100k in contact tracers. @ASlavitt proposing a $46B plan for testing &tracing. As someone who’s done contact tracing for UCLA, no specialized degree is needed—just training. Govt should hire from newly unemployed pool to train necessary contact tracers

The Birx White House plan called for declining cases & testing & tracing, but Trump and many governors of both parties don’t want to wait. They don’t want to be the bad guys, don’t want to deliver an uncomfortable message. 19/

Pre-published data from Italy shows 43% asymptomatic rate, no diff among age groups or viral load. (Confounding presymptomatic for asymptomatic?) If viral load doesn’t account for severe phenotypic differences, what does? Viral strain? Host factors?

⁦⁦Headline frm NEJM⁩ study of pregnant NYC pts:87% asymptomatic rate. BUT-can extrapolate little frm single sample study of healthy/young pts who are high-touch w healthcare. Big takeaway is how much we’ll understand once we can screen gen population

@physicsofus I think Gilead’s priority would be to have a positive study as quickly as possible—so, fewest patients necessary to achieve statistical significance (as @gaither_thomas said, hence the initial power calculation)

Understand it’s anecdotal—but this is in line with my experience at LA Hospitals—#covid patients continuing to present at what feels like a linear rate. Social distancing seems to be holding off that exponential growth felt by docs in NYC cc: @david_furfaro

Italy—where the testing situation looks much like here (gradually increasing with fluctuations)—had a period of 10-12 days where new cases were roughly at a plateau, before taking a more unambiguous turn downward. The US has now been at a plateau for 7 or 8 days. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Great thread extrapolating important takeaways from recent @NatureMedicine article about aerosolization of non-#COVID coronaviruses --wearing a plain mask (not N95) prevents viral shedding. US needs to eliminate stigma around wearing masks in public to safely de-shelter
