Nigeria’s healthcare is in crisis. Despite the 10th HoR’s promise to "allocate a higher percentage of the national budget to the health sector, thereby aligning it with the Abuja declaration which recommends that at least 15% of the national budget be allocated to health," the proposed 2025 budget allocates only 4.81% to health—far below the 15% Abuja benchmark and even lower than the 5% allocated in 2024. Nigeria allocates a lesser percentage of the National Budget to Health than countries like Ghana, Kenya and South Africa, leading to avoidable deaths, mass doctor migration (over 10,000 left in 2023), and over 70% of Nigerians paying out-of-pocket (again more than in Kenya, Ghana, and South Africa). If Nigeria continues on this path—no power in hospitals, dilapidated facilities, unsafe conditions—the consequences are dire: rising maternal/infant mortality, deeper poverty, and a decline in national productivity. It’s time our leaders prioritize healthcare or we all pay the price. #FixOurHealth #KeepPromises @NigeriaGov @NGRSenate @Fmohnigeria @OfficialBenKalu

Promise of the Week: Reserve at least three cabinet positions for persons under the age of 40 and 6 more positions for members under the age of 50. Youth inclusion in governance is key to shaping policies that reflect the aspirations of a younger generation. President Tinubu promised to reserve at least three cabinet positions for those under 40 and six more for those under 50. A government that empowers youth today builds a stronger tomorrow. #KeepPromises

Great insights! At AdvoKC Foundation, we’ve been actively advocating for increased domestic investment in Nigeria’s health sector. The foreign aid uncertainty only amplifies the urgency of our campaign—pushing for the 15% Abuja Declaration benchmark in the national budget. This is a commitment in the 10th HoR Legislative Agenda Document. Our recent advocacy campaign highlights how chronic underfunding affects everyday Nigerians, from overburdened out-of-pocket expenses to failing health infrastructure. We are engaging policymakers, civil society, and citizens to demand better health financing, policy accountability, and sustainable investment in our healthcare system. Nigeria must not rely solely on foreign aid—it’s time for real government action.

This past Sunday, I had the privilege of joining @ARISEtv The Morning Show to discuss the recent uncertainties surrounding foreign aid in Africa's health sector. Upon hearing the news, I felt a wave of concern. Nigeria's healthcare sector is notably underfunded, both by the government and through venture capital investments. In the 2024 Federal Health Budget, the government allocated ₦1.38 trillion to the health sector, representing just 5.03% of the total ₦27.5 trillion budget. This falls significantly short of the 15% benchmark set by the 2001 Abuja Declaration. The most significant impact of reduced foreign aid will be on vulnerable and marginalized populations who depend on it for essential healthcare services, including primary care, maternal health, malaria treatment, HIV, and tuberculosis vaccinations. While foreign aid has its place, it shouldn't be our sole reliance. This situation presents a clear opportunity to invest in our healthcare sector, focusing on areas such as health financing, primary care infrastructure, the healthcare workforce, and medical equipment. During the segment, I also highlighted how @clafiya is working to reduce reliance on foreign aid by addressing the high out-of-pocket costs that often prevent access to health and wellness services. Thank you again to @ARISEtv for this incredible opportunity. We have many exciting developments to share with you this year. Stay tuned 😊.

Promise of the Week: We shall make permanent a biannual “State of the Youth” survey to create a platform for young Nigerians to give feedback to the government regarding their opinions on the performance of government, paying special attention to youth empowerment programs and policies. Youth voices matter! A biannual 'State of the Youth' survey would create a platform for young Nigerians to give feedback on government performance, ensuring that policies and empowerment programs truly meet their needs.
