My favorite part about skate writing these last few years is all the times the skaters share the text with their families. Parents, siblings, lovers, spouses have all reacted to this work. One skater even told me his parents now take him more seriously. Breakthrough!

I like it when someone ollies onto something. When they clear the height and set their back wheels down first, slowly settling into the new context. Almost like a sigh, they decompress from the elevation gain they've just absorbed. The actual trick is still another 10 feet ahead.

I used to think people jumped high. But now I realize they just lift their legs really high. Everything else, still a dark art.
