I've decided that I no longer want to contribute anything to Twitter – at least for now, given its direction.
You'll find me on MacStories, my podcasts, Discord, and our brand new Mastodon server.

Arrivederci, Twitter. 👋❤️
People in Rome, Italy, came together to play the Italian anthem at 6 PM from their balconies and patios during the
#coronarvirusitalia
quarantine. This is what we could hear.
Filling our streets with music – this is so awesome.
We'll get through this ❤ 🇮🇹 🇮🇹 ❤

Holy wow Universal Control is incredible.
This is me moving between a MacBook Pro, an iPad mini, and an iPad Pro using just the MacBook trackpad and keyboard. It's aware of position, lets you drag files, and supports iPadOS gestures.
The hype was real and it all just works 🤯
Today after 7 years, following my latest lab results, my oncologist told me I’m officially clear and they won’t need to see me annually anymore. I walked out that office for, hopefully, one last time, and it felt surreal.
For now, this victory is mine.

The Dynamic Island has to be one my favorite software-related surprises in a while.
In hindsight, it explains so much of Apple's recent design decisions on iOS: pill-shaped alerts, Live Activities, compact UI. They've been playing the long game. I love this.
#AppleEvent
So let me get this straight:
The base model iPad gets a landscape camera (yes) and a brand new Magic Keyboard Folio (yes!) with a detachable keyboard, kickstand (yes!!), and function keys (yes!!!), but the iPad *Pro* gets...none of this?
🙃
From Apple PR:
“iOS 13 will be available on September 19 as a free software update for iPhone 6s and later. Additional software features will be available on September 30 with iOS 13.1.”
Yes!

So I modded my AirPods Pro with an additional memory foam layer underneath the silicone. Much, much better seal for me, which also means warmer sound and better bass. Case closes perfectly.
Should I write about this?
Can you imagine having $48.2 billion cash on hand and YET still thinking "ah yes, those House of Fun Casino ads will grow our bottom line, let's do it"
Guy sitting next to me at the airport and using a Surface was very interested in my iPad Pro setup. And yep, this is a Logitech MX Master 2S mouse with 5 programmable buttons paired with iPadOS via Bluetooth 😍
iOS 14 has a new Back Tap feature in Accessibility and it's wild. You can perform quick actions by double- or triple-tapping the *back of your iPhone*. Literally quick taps on the back; works with a case on.
These include system actions as well as custom shortcuts.
I’ve been working on this for 3 months, and here it is:
My iOS 12 review:
I poured hundreds of hours into this, especially the big Shortcuts chapter (with tons of examples and videos).
Enjoy!
I’ve been working on this for 3 months, pouring hundreds of hours into it. And here it is:
My iOS and iPadOS 13 review:
I covered everything: iOS 13, iPadOS, Shortcuts, and iOS 13.1.
Enjoy!
iOS 14 comes with support for Sound Recognition in Accessibility. Your phone can now listen for specific sounds – a baby crying, smoke alarm, water running, etc. – and notify you.
Amazing feature for all kinds of users – inclusivity at its best.

I worked on this for four months, and here it is:
My iOS and iPadOS 14 review:
I covered everything I could: iOS and iPadOS 14, Shortcuts, and the upcoming iOS 14.2.
Enjoy!
There are two fantastic small changes in iOS 13.2 beta 2:
- You can delete apps from the Home screen long-press menu
- You change video settings inside the Camera app (finally,
@MKBHD
)
I’m not sure if Twitter compression will destroy this image, but this Deep Fusion thing is absolutely amazing when it works. iPhone 11 Pro Max, no edits, straight out of camera. Zoom in.
We did it everyone:
Safari in iOS 15 beta 6 features a new address bar at the bottom that sits below page content. A toolbar with buttons is back.
And we can put the address bar back at the top again 🎉
A while back, Apple asked me to share some thoughts about Shortcuts for Mac.
Today, you can find me on the front page of the Mac App Store, talking about 7 starter shortcuts I prepared for y’all.
I can’t believe this actually happened, but here we are:
Here's a pretty cool shortcut idea: use HDMI-CEC (if your TV supports it) to turn on your TV and switch input to the TV. Use the Apple TV IP address and serial number to do this.
"Hey Siri, turn on Apple TV"
Great new iOS 16 feature: built-in unit conversion everywhere, including Messages. This supports temperatures, currencies, and more.
Finally, I don't have to explain to my American friends what Celsius temps mean anymore 🇪🇺
It took my oncologists a few days to double-check everything (radiotherapy side effects: apparently it’s a thing), but:
My X-Ray is clear and I’ve “officially” reached 5 full years cancer-free. Onwards! 💪 💪 💪 💪 💪

Today, Apple is opening its new store in Rome, Via del Corso.
I visited the store yesterday with
@_silviagatta
. It's absolutely STUNNING: Apple restored the 19th century Palazzo Marignoli to its former glory. It feels more like a museum than a store.
Story coming soon!
For the past 7 years, the iPad has been my main computer.
In this story, I share everything I've learned, describe my entire iPad setup, and collect my wishes for iOS 13 and the future of iPad.
I've poured months of work into this.
Beyond the Tablet:
Okay Apple people, hear me out:
- iPad Studio (big drawing canvas, multi-column multitasking)
- iPod Studio (hi-res player + DAC for other Apple devices)
- HomePod Studio (giant speaker, long live iPod HiFi)
you’re welcome
iPhone performance was the hot topic of conversation with family over the holidays. I assumed Apple would give discounts on batteries soon.
I did not expect an apology with full technical details. This feels like the right move to me.
Huge App Store news:
Apple is reducing commissions to 15% for developers who earned less than $1 million in a year.
This is called the App Store Small Business Program, and it starts January 1, 2021.
We have all the details here:
Apple's new store in Rome is an outstanding blend of the city's architectural history and Apple's modern vision. I've never seen anything like this.
Here's my story, with photos:
A Palazzo Reborn: Inside Apple’s Stunning New Store in Via del Corso, Rome
I took a day/night photo tour of Rome to test the iPhone 11 Pro's camera. The results were incredible.
Here's my story with 50 full-res, unedited (!) photos of Rome, featuring night mode, Deep Fusion, Smart HDR, and the iPhone 11 Pro's three lenses.
Looks like iOS 12.2 beta introduces support for the Web Share API in Safari and other web views – meaning web devs can now create buttons to invoke the native system share sheet. (via: )
I tested this with a shortcut, totally works.
The Epic-Apple drama feels like the logical conclusion of what's been escalating for months.
I don't think Epic will win the lawsuit. But: this is terrible publicity for Apple, and more ammo for antitrust cases.
I have a feeling none of this will end well for Apple.
I regret to inform you that even in an alternate timeline, and even in deep space, there are still people who keep their macOS dock at the bottom
(For All Mankind, S03E04)
A "wow" moment for the iOS 16 Lock Screen:
Not only can the depth effect place subjects in front of the time, it even supports *transparency*.
In this case, I can make the time appear through sunglasses 🤯
The Italian PM just announced that the entire country has been placed on lockdown to fight
#COVID2019
.
I have to say: I have the utmost respect for this man and all government agencies and our healthcare system at this time. We will get through this, together. 🇮🇹

YES – Apple is launching a karaoke mode for Apple Music called 'Sing'. I've always wanted this in a music streaming service, and Apple Music has the best real-time lyrics experience of all. I absolutely cannot wait for this. 😍
For the past several months, I've been collecting and updating all the workflows and shortcuts I've ever created for Apple's Shortcuts app.
Today we're launching the MacStories Shortcuts Archive – 150 custom shortcuts, all free to download:
I always wanted Apple Music to launch a “Year in Review” feature…so I decided to build it with Shortcuts.
*two months later*
Apple Music Wrapped is a shortcut to generate a personalized report for your top songs, artists, and genres of the year. Enjoy!
Over the past few years I struggled with stress, anxiety, and not taking care of myself after cancer.
So 6 months ago, I decided to live my life differently.
This is my story of how exercise, mindfulness, and gratitude are changing me.
❤ 💪
iPad Pro connected to a 4K UltraFine display with support for Bluetooth keyboard, mouse, and DualShock 4 controller.
Just need a single USB-C cable to go from tablet to dream iOS workstation, now with cursor support 😍
(I re-use the same accessories for my Mac mini.)
Also new in iOS 15.4:
Live Text integration in Notes and Reminders. You can now create new reminders or add text to a note by just scanning it with the camera.
Big news for EU citizens:
iOS 15.4 will bring support for adding EU Digital COVID Certificates in the Health and Wallet apps.
I tested my Italian vaccination record and it worked with Health. Not in Wallet yet. These will show up under Immunization records in the Health app. 💉
ECG and irregular heart rhythm notifications set up. I continue to believe the Health/Activity teams at Apple are making some of the most important contributions to consumer tech in modern history.
Go update your Watches and enable these in the Health app ❤
I finally went ahead and deactivated my Facebook account.
I’m tired of this platform allowing the proliferation of ‘no vax’ groups, fake news, and the organization of “COVID doesn’t exist” events. The final straw was one of these ‘protests’ in my hometown. 🧵
Here is how Shortcuts is a game changer for personal automation:
In a simple flow of actions, control Do Not Disturb, HomeKit, and Music – and summon everything via voice, without ever opening the app.
Creating an automated assistant will be amazing 😎
Amazing feature in iOS 14.5 beta 2: you can now share lyrics from Apple Music.
Long-press any line in real-time lyrics to share. There is support for Instagram stories and even iMessage cards, which will play that specific part of the song in Messages.
My region lifted age limits for at-risk patients, so guess who got his first sweet vaccine shot this week? ✋
Fuck COVID. Stay safe and get vaccinated. 💪 💉
I've seen a few shortcuts for
@OpenAI
GPT-3, but I wanted to build my own to have a true, long conversation with AI.
Here's me, having a back and forth conversation with GPT about Rome with several follow-up questions. With a log at the end.
Simply incredible. Way beyond Siri.
Hey
@jack
here’s a CRAZY idea:
Perhaps someone creating multiple accounts to wish my cancer came back should be flagged by your company’s very intelligent algorithms?
Or do you think this “serves the public conversation” too?
Apple has quietly rolled out the new Apple Music mood and activity playlists for Siri announced on Monday.
We've spent hours searching Apple Music and found over 250 of them.
So we collected 250+ direct links to open them, and I also made a shortcut:
I skipped my annual x-ray last year because of COVID (didn’t want to be around hospitals / clinics), which made me anxious. Never again.
Did it now that I’m fully vaccinated, and everything is still in the clear and unchanged.

😎 💪
I interviewed Apple's Craig Federighi about iPadOS, the new pointer, and the iPad's versatility on my podcast
@AppStoriesNet
.
Listen to our 50-minute deep dive here:
I spent the past few weeks working on a shortcut to create custom Home screen icons on iOS.
Home Screen Icon Creator lets you add custom icons to launch any URL, custom shortcut, or action for a specific contact. It also supports solid color icons.
I've spent the past 24 hours using the Magic Keyboard for iPad Pro. It already feels like a game changer for pro iPad users, but it also keeps the iPad's nature intact. Here are my thoughts.
A New Breed of Laptop:
In iOS 13.1, Apple re-enabled the option of launching specific Settings sections via URLs and the Shortcuts app.
So I tried to document all these URLs.
Here are 120 URLs that launch specific pages or sub-sections of the Settings app.
Whoa – Apple listened to feedback and there are some BIG changes to Stage Manager for iPadOS:
- Stage Manager on the iPad's screen is now supported on 2018 & 2020 iPad Pros
- External display support on M1 is getting delayed to a future software update
Here is my shortcut to make iPhone XS and XS Max screenshots prettier with device frames.
No configuration needed, supports both phones and both orientations, can also combine multiple screens together. Enjoy.
