Yeah, this is definitely a retcon to Gohan’s character. The prior two arcs treated Gohan becoming a fighter and being more like Goku as a good thing and a sign of growth. Is it realistic? No but DB never is. Now this arc suddenly treats Gohan as a much more realistic kid.
