Joan Didion wasn't available to write about Jennifer Aniston, so I did it!
On Joan, Jen, and narrative for
@LAReviewofBooks
.
(Yes, this is real. No, I am not kidding.)
This morning Broadway Briefing put out this list of Sondheim reflections… and every single one, in a list of 14, is written by a man.
I am positive women have thoughts on Sondheim too!
The Nederlanders being big time conservatives and Trump supporters was NEVER a secret.
And one reason it’s so hard for anyone to do anything about is that Broadway is essentially a monopoly.
My one and only theatre thought to end 2020:
Lear deBessonet has been talking about bringing back the Federal Theatre Project for YEARS. And I can't help wondering if the reason her name keeps getting omitted from discussions about it is because she's not on social media.
It is time for me to talk about the American theatre AGAIN.
By not commenting on Roe, the
@BroadwayLeague
etc are putting themselves outside the mainstream. Many entertainment organizations HAVE issued statements supporting reproductive rights.
Not commenting is NOT the norm.
This profile of
@KChenoweth
is delightful and I love that it pretty much exclusively concentrates on her work and why she's SO good at her job!
(and, yes, she is amazing on Trial & Error)
@blakeflayton
I’d add, from personal experience, they tend to have grown up in cities with large Jewish populations and are in total active denial of what it’s like to be Jewish in the rest of the country.
@JillFilipovic
My plan if I have to vote for a candidate I don’t like (but who is still, obviously, better than Trump) is:
1. Drink some tequila
2. Vote
3. Donate to a charity that works on issues I think that candidate is weak/problematic in
One of my points here is that the economic system of Broadway (and really all US theatre) is antithetical to equality. And that’s an economic system that includes Broadway theaters, non-profits, college BFA programs (don’t get me started) etc etc
Jewish People!
I know there are a number of Jewish political groups to follow and get involved with, but might I recommend
@USJewishDems
?
Yes, I might. And I am.
I haven’t taken a law class since summer camp, BUT given that Broadway theatres are finite— and that the only way to be on Broadway is to be in a Broadway theatre— and that the means of distribution are controlled by 3 orgs, how has there never been a legal challenge to this?
I know "Broadway is generally a good community" is a well-meaning statement, but I think Broadway would be better off if everyone admitted that it was actually a very flawed community. And that what the Broadway League is doing here is in fact 100% on brand for Broadway.
Broadway is generally a good community. But what the Broadway League does here--meeting to "judge" recent deaths and dole out variously sized tributes when it decides how much someone mattered--is grotesque. Pay tribute or don't. But don't make it a game.
I know everyone is talking about To Kill a Mockingbird as the Big Snub. But Lila Neugebauer not getting nominated is is a big snub too and here is why.
If
@WaverlyGallery
, helmed by Lila Neugebauer, wins Best Revival of a Play, it will be the first time since 2001 that the director of the winning play was not nominated for Best Director. Lila was the only woman to direct a revival on Broadway this season.
#TonyAwards2019
It seems worth saying that I know people who *have* stood up to Scott Rudin. And have stood up to other abusive people in the theatre. And just because it's not on social media does not mean it didn't happen.
If you’re talking about Hercules— and it seems everyone is— you should be talking about Lear deBessonet.
She made Hercules happen.
She made Public Works happen.
She is going to make a lot of other things happen.
Hercules directed by Lear deBessonet begins this weekend, so this seems like a good day to re-share this very in-depth profile I wrote about Lear, her faith, her work, and her ambition. She is a truly fascinating person. And is doing BIG things.
This is part of an ongoing issue in the theatre press (and the theatre community) with whose voice gets elevated and becomes the default when something is important and "needs authority."
A couple of examples...
When I profiled her in Feb. 2019, she mentioned it:
And in September of this year she spoke to a little publication called The New Yorke Times about it:
Fact I learned while being stuck in traffic:
Greta Gerwig was rejected from the MFA playwriting programs at NYU, Yale, AND Juilliard.
And she’s doing pretty well!
1. Important to remember how hard female directors have to work in order to have their careers at all.
2. And how truly hard they have to work to get their choices for design teams etc.
3. Leigh deserves a lot of credit for making it happen. It shouldn't go unnoticed.
My bookshelf just got better because now it has this Joan Didion first edition. Thanks
@andevers
&
@secondshelfbks
! If you are looking for first edition or rare books by women, check them out!
Anyway, social media isn't democratic or meritocratic and, personally, I think it's one of the bigger existential threats to the American theatre. Happy New Year!
Heidi Schreck getting multiple(!) Tony nominations today for
@constitutionbwy
is the first time since 2016 that I have had any faith that a small group of voters can make an absolute, 100% right choice for the majority.
I finally saw
@HillaryClinton
at the theatre!!!!!!
And at the MOST, most perfect show for this grand occasion: What the Constitution Means to Me at
@NYTW79
Congrats (again) to
@hbrikin
on this profound piece of work.
While writing about Bernadette Peters I found out that during Sunday when she said she thought Dot needed to be more fully realized, Sondheim & Lapine thought it was just her being vain. Later they admitted she was right and changed it. So, yes, more women interpreting Sondheim.
It’s Stephen Sondheim’s birthday.
Did you know there have only been three productions of Sondheim musicals directed by women on Broadway?
Sweeney Todd by Susan H. Schulman in 1989.
The Frogs by Susan Stroman in 2004.
Sunday in the Park by Sarna Lapine in 2017.
When you think about it, maybe the most profound and prescient musical theatre moment of our time was actually
@KChenoweth
repeatedly yelling, "I can't stand it!"
For the record, this is also true for organizations like
@TCG
(as a non-profit, you're allowed to issue a statement supporting human rights) and publications like
@playbill
&
@broadwaycom
etc.
@MichaelPaulson
@nytimestheater
@TheTonyAwards
When people are voting on shows they saw a year/year and a half ago, I will be curious to see the correlation between votes and a show's/performer's presence on social media. Among other things.
I’m not popular enough for anything I say on here to really make any impact, but as Fran Lebowitz said, “holding grudges is the modern equivalent of having standards.” And what I lack in popularity, I make up for in ability to hold a grudge!
Standing in line at Russ & Daughters along with 1/4 of downtown Jews, all complaining, many of whom are reading the NY Review of Books, one reading Bonfire of the Vanities, and one midwestern tourist who has never seen a Jew before and is really getting an education.
Imagine a world in which a woman was given space in the Sunday New York Times to explain her play!
This ⬇️ says so much about how people view men’s work as being made of choices and women’s as being flawed.
Matthew Lopez has come under criticism for his depiction of the gay community in "The Inheritance." His response: "Avoidance of uncomfortable truths is not the role of the artist. Healing is impossible if you don’t understand the cause of the injury."
I was the one who tweeted this. I debated doing it for 45 minutes. Because I was afraid people would get mad at us for acknowledging anti-Semitism. That was 45 minutes too long.
For people who are feeling angry and upset over today’s anti-Semitic murders in Pittsburgh, here are three things you can do:
1. Donate to
@HIASrefugees
2. Donate to
@ADL_National
3. VOTE on November 6th
Today some intrepid New Yorkers commandeered a double-decker bus, put a giant "you're fired!" banner on it, and drove it down 5th Avenue. And I'm pretty sure it is now the holiday season in NYC.
I hate to use twitter for anything other than seeking validation and sharing photos of my cat, but
@kelliohara
and the
@nyphil
performing Knoxville: Summer of 1915 was spectacular and there are two more chances to see it and everyone should.
Today someone pointed out to me that, at the moment,
@TheIntervalNY
is the only major journalistic NYC theatre publication that has a woman as Editor-in-Chief-- and owner.
(meaning me)
(I am clarifying this tweet since apparently it needed it)
A few people have asked if
@TheIntervalNY
is doing anything for Women’s History Month and I’m realizing that “[stares into camera]” loses effect over e-mail.
@britnidlc
@washingtonpost
Who is going to tell the Hallmark executives that Irving Berlin was Jewish...?
Also it’s only Dec. 2nd but this is already my favorite thing written about the holidays.
Hooray for the incredible Jeanine Tesori!
And hooray for
@nytimestheater
&
@JesseKGreen
for publicizing this fact: With this win, Jeanine Tesori becomes the first woman ever to win twice for best score.
Lastly, one positive thing I will say, is that I appreciate that a number of Jews wrote about him, since there has been an issue with non-Jews erasing his Jewishness (something that happens disturbingly frequently when a lauded Jewish person dies).
Furthermore, I'd like to take a moment to remind everyone of when Sherie Rene Scott wrote this piece about sexual harassment in theatre. And a lot of people ignored her.
Every year for
@TheIntervalNY
we'd share the Top 10 most read stories of the year. Since we still did 6 months of work (and since I actually do know how to use google analytics), I'm going to share 2019's Top 10!
(also because they are interesting!)
Because 1/4 of the books on my shelves are about the Holocaust, a brief list of anti-semitism at the U.S. Capitol in the last 24 hours:
- Camp Auschwitz sweatshirts
- 6 million wasn't enough t-shirts
- Nazi flags
- Congresswoman saying "Hitler was right."
This is a very good and succinct piece about the inverted attitudes that many white Americans have about the police and how destructive those attitudes are. It is worth the few minutes it takes to read it.
I don't know how to summarize this for twitter, but this is one of my favorite pieces we've ever done for
@TheIntervalNY
and everyone should go look at it.
This is true for theatre too. And as theatres and institutions examine themselves, it would behove them to think about this and the people who were “emerging” and then seemed to have vanished.
the sad truth about this wave of media reckonings is that it feels way too late — so many talented Black journalists and media creators chose their sanity and moved on. grieving for all their careers / stories.
@Lynnbrooklyn
@dramatistsguild
@tina24hour
Oy that is wrong. For the reasons others have mentioned but also because it propagates the idea that people in the arts “come from money” and that jobs in the arts are kinda sorta hobbies.
The Interval's Top 10 Most Read Stories of 2019...
3. Jennifer Ashley Tepper on Be More Chill And More
@SarahRebell
spoke with
@jenashtep
about being a young female producer on Broadway.
"So she preferred not to share it, or even much of the song list, 'earring on the side of caution,' as she wrote in an email, a nicely feminine typo."
As she wrote on twitter, a nicely sexist and unnecessary sentence.
They met on "Rent" and broke out with "The Last Five Years." Later, Norbert Leo Butz and Sherie Rene Scott had a "fracture" in their relationship. Now they're singing about it.
@Casey_Mink
I should add specifically Marcy Heisker and Zina Goodrich. And actually her other speciality song, 14G, was composed by Jeanine Tesori.
(yes, I do know random Kristin Chenoweth facts...and yes my life is very fulfilling lately)
Not high school, but when I was 8 I auditioned for Annie with "Luck Be A Lady" from Guys and Dolls, complete with original choreography by me (who had never taken a dance class).
I did not get in.
So excited for all the little girls who know that someday, if they direct a critically acclaimed movie, they too can get snubbed for an Oscar nomination!
"We’re in a moment where the American musical, and particularly the classic American musical, is being reconsidered in so many ways."
@JackViertel1
, who is stepping down after 20 years as artistic director of the Encores! program at
@NYCityCenter
I wrote about
@OfficialBPeters
and women who are too much and take up space. Also about Lucille Ball, Sonny & Cher, and Eve Babitz. But mostly the other stuff.
As someone who is a
@roundaboutnyc
donor (and someone they put on a “leadership committee”*), I’d like to point them towards this tweet. But only if they hire a woman to direct!
(*this is me leading!)
Did you enjoy
@TheIntervalNY
's social media last night during the Tony Awards? Then take a moment and thank
@whatthebeautyis
for the tweets and
@desinasim
for the graphics. They both like cookies and women breaking glass ceilings.
Announcement!
I am now going to say something almost nice about Ben Brantley.
I appreciate that in his Pretty Woman musical review, he credits women liking the movie not to Richard Gere or it being romantic (because it’s not), but to Julia Roberts.
This is
@TheIntervalNY
's Tony stats thread. When we started doing this a few years ago, there were no stats about women and the Tonys anywhere. It's a lot of work. And that work is done by the small but mighty Interval staff. Especially
@whatthebeautyis
and
@desinasim
!
It's TIME...
2019 statistics about women and the Tony Awards!
(Please note that the following stats count nominations, not individuals, unless otherwise noted.)
#TonyAwards2019
People often (occasionally) ask what
@TheIntervalNY
would have done for content over the last year & a half. We would have done a series of interviews with a mysterious Bway diva who was running amok (played by me!). And let me tell you, the world is missing out on this content.
Yes, Broadway's innate favoritism towards women must be why there are so many women in all categories that don't have the word "actress" in them! Obviously!
... And just think of the money Broadway could save by hiring female directors because they can pay them less than men! And they say girls are bad at economics!
Looking ahead to the new season, we sure do have a lot of exciting musicals coming in! Some about women, too! But of those announced, there will be *takes out fingers to count…* A SINGLE ONE directed by a woman.
Lear deBessonet as the artistic director of Encores is an excellent, excellent choice and means I will continue to steal my mother’s subscription tickets.
Walking to a protest wearing my
@Janefonda
t-shirt and, as I walk by a line of police cars while NYPD helicopters fly overhead, I pass someone wearing a Lily Tomlin t-shirt.
Hello World!! The time that we've all been waiting for has come...
I am briefly coming out of talking-about-theatre-retirement to weigh in on Bad Art Friend and THE THEATRE.
"The holiday celebrates a deliberate act of compassion toward an enslaved people, and calls on us to emulate that divine conduct ourselves. 'Passing over' is a morally neutral act; a 'sacrifice of compassion' is not."
I talked to Rachel Hauck who designed two of the most complicated sets on Broadway this season. If you are interested in visual storytelling or development of new work, you should read what she has to say!
Tonight
@hadestown
begins performances on Broadway. Directed by
@rachelchavkin
, it’s the only musical in the 2018/19 season directed by a woman.
There was also only 1 musical directed by a woman in the 2017/18 season.
In recent years, Ohio politics haven't gotten a lot of attention on the national level and, meanwhile, reproductive rights in the state have been slowly chipped away. So if you're donating to abortion funds, might I suggest
@WHOohio
and
@PretermCLE
.
One of the best theatre profiles to appear in the NYTimes recently is about a woman and by a woman-- and also by someone with no background in theatre, which I actually find not so surprising but an interesting thing to note and, you know, mention on twitter.
