Millions of Americans who are immunocompromised or living w/ disabilities & chronic illnesses feel they are being left behind as society moves on after omicron by lifting mask mandates & distancing measures.

announced this morning that flights might be booked to capacity starting July 1st - doing away with its social distancing policy.
Another example of COVID-19 policies being at the whim of the airline, bc of no federal enforcement from FAA.
The federal government has continued to leave it up to the airlines to regulate themselves regarding masks and other policies to foster consumer confidence in air travel.

Just asked at WH COVID Press Briefing what msg should be to ppl who are living w/ disabilities or are immunocompromised & who feel they are being left behind as US moves on after omicron.
Walensky didn't rly answer the q, said considerations for high risk ppl are taken into acct
"The COVID issue - this is critically important. They told us so many things that turned out not to be accurate," says Rep. Jim Jordan, saying Republicans will conduct investigations on COVID origins if they take House majority, during McCarthy's Commitment to America rollout.

I'm joining the health team at
@axios
in August to cover health care policy and I couldn't be more excited!!
Lorraine Rogge was tested for STIs w/out her knowledge.
The hospital charged $12,000 for the tests & said she owed $3,000.
Fearing collections, Rogge started making payments. Then I called the hospital.

Just learned in the House Press Gallery that the Speaker apparently controls the temperature in the Chamber. But still no Speaker and a fifth vote now expected. So if you’re sweating in the Chamber that’s why!
but to many who are high risk who I've been talking to over the past week, it doesn't feel like their needs are being taken into account, as mask mandates and other covid restrictions are being lifted across the country, making it unsafe for many of them to leave their homes.
Some of the most prolific spreaders of anti-vax & covid misinformation on social media are doctors with active medical licenses & no disciplinary actions on their records. Why aren't medical boards doing more to stop them?

Reason number 1000 I love being a hill reporter…
The 19th Amendment is in the Capitol!!
It’s the very first time that the document has been brought back to the Capitol since it passed the Senate on this day 105 years ago.
🍨 a literal Scoop: Hearing per source familiar that Longworth Cafeteria is hosting a create your own sundae bar tomorrow from 11 a.m.-1 p.m. (while supplies last)!
And it’s free!!
Every single House Democrat voted "yes" for the Inflation Reduction Act, which means for the first time Medicare is going to be allowed to negotiate prescription drug prices. There will also be a $2,000 out of pocket cap for seniors. Plus, ACA subsidies extended for another 3 yrs
Mine is certainly not the only story that has covered this undercovered topic this week. The terrific
@edyong209
published a story on Wednesday in the Atlantic:
I'm grateful to the high risk individuals who were willing to share their experiences w/ me & I think that's the most important part of all of these stories. Amplifying the voices of people who are impacted by society wanting to move back to a normal that isn't possible for them.
This afternoon President-elect Biden said 100 million ppl who have pre-ex conditions could be affected if the ACA is overturned.
We've checked that one before and it's Mostly True, tho estimates on the number of those with pre-ex vary

This story took awhile, so I want to point out some of my other findings:
Someone please let a

reporter in the White House press briefing room next time.
I have lots of questions about the president's plans for a public option, drug pricing legislation and not to mention, getting through the rest of this pandemic!!
1/ Okay here it is, the Hideaway review:
Food is subpar, actually maybe actively bad. Surprising since I think it’s food literally being wheeled over fr the Members Dining Room.
Pasta was flavorless & not warm. And for $13??
@josephzeballos
rated it 4/10. Pro tem tots same…
Biden just held a press briefing to announce that his administration has purchased 200 million more doses of COVID vaccine (100 million from Pfizer and 100 million from Moderna) that will be delivered this summer. That increases the total the U.S. has ordered to 600 million.
Okay here we go: the Dirksen Thanksgiving™️ meal. This one was an overall win.
Everything was good, but special standouts were stuffing, mac n’ cheese & mashed potatoes. Only downside was the weight will get ya - Thanksgiving food is heavy! $16 for this. For cost giving it 9/10.
Bisi gave birth in her car to her son Dorian 2 months early, en route to hospital.
During Dorian's NICU stay, the year changed and so did his insurance. But the hospital didn't process it & stuck Bisi w/ a $550k bill.
Until I called.

Just announced that we’re getting our second WH COVID Briefing under the direction of Dr. Jha tomorrow. They’ll be discussing the plan for under 5 years old vaccinations. The last COVID briefing was 3 weeks ago.
At the end of the briefing, Jha made a point to say that they have been talking to the media a lot and would be doing these briefings regularly. The last one before this was 6 weeks ago, so let’s see when they schedule the next one 👀
The time has come for the vending machine review…
Got the calzone ($8) & molten lava cake ($7). calzone wasn’t great, the bread was pretty tough and dry. Cheese pull was good tho. 6/10
The cake was pretty great (for one popped out of a machine), with a real molten center. 8/10
🚨 new hot food vending machine in Cannon Rotunda basement per House staffer who sent me a pic.
Offerings include: White Castle sliders, Stouffer’s Mac n’ cheese and a molten lava cake???
Prices seem kinda high but I’m gonna have to try it sometime during recess for the bit
It has come to my attention I may need to let y’all know that the *Rayburn Reuben* is a non-traditional reuben, very thousand island-cole slaw forward but I stand by it, it is SO GOOD
Okay truly have found the best value brekkie burrito to get you through a Thursday morning House vote, courtesy of
@Reporter_Mia
’s tip.
Egg, cheese, hash browns & bacon
FOR $3.80 from the House carryout.
Only served til 10:30 is the one downside. But other than that, 10/10.
During tonight’s debate, Biden claimed that soon after the ACA was passed, Bloomberg called the law a disgrace. It’s true. The evidence is from a 2010 speech Bloomberg gave at Dartmouth. The latest from me &

Republicans in tight congressional races are going silent on health care, not just scrubbing websites of anti-abortion language but also distancing themselves from past criticism of the ACA. My latest story looks into what the GOP stands for on health care
Did my very first network TV hit on
@CBSNews
today!!!! (And from of all places, the Russell Rotunda)!
Watch for a summary of what went down during today’s first COVID Select Subcommittee Hearing which focused on COVID origins and where we go from here.
Today’s Cap Hill value food find: A side of mac and cheese for $2 from the Senate carry out! honestly very creamy and it’s a pretty big portion - and so rich that I almost couldn’t finish it
Not pictured: the very sweet CBS camera guys who told me I was great afterwards (even tho I was nervous) and snapped a pic of me like proud fathers documenting my first time on camera!!
Alright so the basement neighbors in my rowhouse beat us to ordering the tests... while we have the same address, they put that they were in the "b unit" while I put we were in the "a unit." but still no dice on our unit being able to order tests. any others having this problem??
Guy at the COVID testing site saw that my birthday was Saturday, wished me a happy belated and then said “1991, huh?” And I said, “Yep, the big 3-0.”
As I walked out of the tent he shouted after me, “30 to 40 is the best years of your life!!”
Here’s to hoping that’s true!! 🎉
wildest part of the lorde concert thus far: she’s talking about swimming in the Potomac river today. lorde, I love you but noo it’s so contaminated!!!!

Another Hill reporter (who wants to remain anonymous) just stopped me and said I influenced them to try the Rayburn Reuben and they loved it lollll my brand remains strong ✨
Before leaving Fredericksburg, the Treasury Secretary crushes a hot dog with slaw at Mason-Dixon Cafe and washes it down with a chocolate soft serve at Carl’s Ice Cream Shop.
Highlights from today's WH COVID Briefing:
-biggest news is that Slavitt announced the Biden administration will be almost doubling the Medicare reimbursement rate for COVID vaccines
-the previous rate was $23 per shot and will now go up to $40/shot (so $80 for two-dose regimen)
House unanimously passes the bill requiring the Director of National Intelligence to declassify information relating to the origin of COVID. Passed 419-0. This bill already passed the Senate by unanimous consent previously.
The White House hasn't threatened to veto it.
Showed my mom around the Capitol today bc she wanted to see where I work… but she wouldn’t let us leave without trying the Rayburn Reuben!
Her rating: 8/10. Points were only deducted bc she wanted more cole slaw. Guess I am my mother’s daughter.
Dem Senators are holding a press conference now on protecting IVF.
Sen. Duckworth has a bill that guarantees the right to IVF. She’s going to ask for UC on the legislation tomorrow.
GOP senators told me last night that they need to look at the bill but it may be a states issue.
Biden answers a shouted question fr reporters on when he thinks we'll be back to normal (after announcing he expects every American to have access to vaccine by end of May):
"I've been cautioned not to give an answer to that," he said. He added he hopes by this time next year.
Big Capitol Hill lunch for me today, w/ my first visit to the Madison Bldg Cafe in the Library of Congress!
They have an extensive selection of nice sushi, poke bowls & bento boxes as well as a pho & udon noodle stand. Also actual nice outside views! Food & atmosphere are 10/10

An anon House staffer has been requesting that I review Ford Cafe for weeks (derogatory).
Vibes are bleak & so are food options. Hot bar items were actually quite cold when I got them and I had to wait ages to get fresh green beans. Cauliflower was inedible. Salad was okay. 4/10
Being a congressional reporter seems glam until you’re eating in a hallway outside a hearing room where food isn’t allowed in.
But I digress. This is the Cups chicken caesar wrap which is my go-to on days when I want to pretend I’m healthy. Huge points for inclu croutons. 10/10.
Okay live on the scene for the Hideaway’s opening. A bit disappointing for all the speakeasy-like hype - it’s literally just a pick-up spot for carryout food directly beside the Members’ Dining Room.
No one to take your order, you just have to order from an app called Everyday.

Bc both of these vaccines require 2 doses, that translates to 300 million Americans being able to be vaccinated. The U.S. population is 330M including children.
Biden also said: "But, the brutal truth is it’s going to take months before the majority of Americans are vaccinated."
Halle Berry in the Senate Swamp talking about a bipartisan bill introduced today that would increase federal research on menopause.
Many senators are sharing their own stories of going through menopause & how if men went through it there would already be extensive research done.

Since the President continues to say this, I must point out again the Trump admin has offered no replacement plan for Obamacare. That means tho Trump says he will protect those with pre-ex, we have no idea how he would do so.
Also he's said this forever:
We will have Healthcare which is FAR BETTER than ObamaCare, at a FAR LOWER COST - BIG PREMIUM REDUCTION. PEOPLE WITH PRE EXISTING CONDITIONS WILL BE PROTECTED AT AN EVEN HIGHER LEVEL THAN NOW. HIGHLY UNPOPULAR AND UNFAIR INDIVIDUAL MANDATE ALREADY TERMINATED. YOU’RE WELCOME!
Get you someone who looks at you like
@Ximena_Bustillo
looks at the Rayburn Reuben.
This was Ximena’s first Reuben & her review was it was homey & comforting but the bread was “too weak” & fell apart too easily. “I like strong bread,” she said. Which, valid.
Her rating: 7.8/10.
By popular demand, I’m finally reviewing the Cups chipotle chicken panini! (per request of
@DaniellaMicaela
)
Excellent cheese pull, good chipotle flavor & love peppers & avocado. My only qualm was I wanted chicken chopped rather than one long piece. But a solid add to list. 8/10
Fact-check: "During these 100 days, an additional 800,000 Americans enrolled in the Affordable Care Act when I established a special sign-up period to do that."
This appears accurate but needs context.
HHS's last announcement was 528,000 Americans had signed up during the SEP.
Update: after two years of avoiding it, I did test positive for COVID this morning. seems like there's a lot of people in D.C. testing positive right now, so this is just your reminder that allergy symptoms might actually be COVID after all☹️now please send me movie/TV recs!!

Stayed up til 1:30 for final debate & left it all on the field w/ another Pants on Fire. Trump claims 180M ppl would lose their private insurance to socialized medicine under Biden. That's ridiculous & conflates the public option w/M4A.

House bean soup also wasn’t very good. Hate to say it but Senate bean soup is better. 6/10.

Okay I’m done, someone page me when we get an actual speakeasy on campus.

I tried the Longworth scrapple this morning so you don’t have to… and you shouldn’t. This is not a dish I can get behind, it was so game-y I could only take one bite.
BUT I can say the biscuit and gravy was delicious, 10/10.

The COVID Select Subcommittee is starting their investigation into COVID vaccines w/ a new letter sent to the FDA today that asks for comms/documents around the Pfizer vax full approval & alleging the Biden admin fast-tracked the vax & didn’t follow guidelines.
Letter below ⬇️
Trump promised to release a health care plan by the end of August. Yet, it's Sept. 1 & still no plan.
Trump has a history of promising a health plan that never comes to fruition. Reupping my story from 2 weeks ago, tracking the many times he's said this.
In July,
@TheFSMB
-which oversees all state med boards- issued a statement saying doctors who spread covid misinformation could have their medical license suspended or revoked.
To date, there are only 2 reports of that happening.
It's possible doctors are being investigated rn.
🚨 NEW: Hideaway “new and improved” menu just dropped!!! (thanks to those who forwarded it to me)
Looking like they’re adding more bowls. Nixing the olive oil pasta (for the best) but keeping the $7 tots.
Am def interested in the Whip Count brownie though!
keep getting asked what I’m eating in the press gallery rn so here’s today’s value meal: a chicken wrap in which they chop up the chicken tenders(!) & put whatever veggies and sauce you want in there. it’s $6!, in Capitol Market (and it’s pretty big, I just had already ate half)
