anti-intellectualism is hard to come back from too. you destroy every tool you have, and you are delighted to do it. anyone who tries to help you is your worst enemy in the world you built. best of luck.

I have begged people to read Jamaican philosopher Charles W. Mills’ excellent paper, “The Wretched of Middle Earth” for years. He passed in 2021, tragically. Let me share his essential argument & the reason I call Tolkien’s world building and world development “race science 2.0”

it is so arrogant to think that “i don’t like it/it’s not what i would have done” translates to “and so this is bad writing.” “elrond disrespecting the dwarves despite acting like their friend is bad writing!” no. you’re uncomfortable with a damning character flaw.

big win, the high elves are still aryans, the zombies/mindless hordes that it is morally acceptable to slaughter are still arab, and the poc are only allowed to be humans, dwarves, and what tolkien has defined as elves that need the guidance and leadership of high elves

how did feanor end up The Character everyone reads as a colonizer when the loss of silvan as a language happens under sindar hegemony and finrod took nargothrond. elf hegemony is inwardly replicated imho, case of the former, outwardly justified, case of the latter.

yay, zombie arabs festooned in gold and jewelry and parodies of the traditional headdresses, animated by resentment and malice— this isn’t classic orientalism continuing the legacy of PJ, it’s just an artistic and narrative choice that will totally pay off later.

the silmarillion should be widely read simply because of the way it thoughtfully handles a devastating and volatile three-way divorce— “sunshine, are you lying and deceiving again?”— no! you dare? i am simply summarizing the canonicity of melkor/nienna/sauron.

lotr/rop, the hobbit, and bg3 replicate and exacerbate existing fantasy racism by trying to dress the inherent issues up in what amounts to shallow “inclusive” marketing. a fantasy race defined by and bound to fixed + inherent traits is just race science given legitimacy.

ROP deconstructed nothing; it reinforced the same system already in place by tolkien’s racist and orientalist worldview. the recent racism from the show is not new, and i am frankly appalled that you ever “forgot” white people, let alone amazon, were behind it.

personally, i have no idea how people have this much trust or faith in trop, when the marketing deliberately puts their actors of color front and center for abuse, the casting mostly sticks to the status quo re: fantasy racism, and the writers are two white mormon men to boot

THIS is a bad faith interpretation and as a result a bad faith argument. it is intellectually incurious, it ascribes its own ignorance to malice, and it pretends a single reference to a wider and ongoing discourse is the only existence of that discourse there is

fëanor teaching himself valarin and never passing it on or making any kind of guide for it is objectively the funniest thing he ever did. especially because his dialect, according to pengolodh at least, had way fewer valarin loan-words than the dialect of the vanyar did.
