Today on
#Eritrea
’s independence day, I want to share a speech I recently gave at the United Nations.
The only way we can meaningfully honour our freedom fighters is by continuing their fight. I hope this speech can shine light on why that is.
I don’t understand how people can minimise the pain many of us feel when we see how different Ukrainian refugees are being treated from other refugees. It’s painful to constantly be reminded that this treatment could’ve been possible for our loved ones if only they were white.
Tigray has never had this little humanitarian supplies. People are unnecessarily starving, dying, suffering. I have never felt as helpless as I do following & working on the conflict in Ethiopia. But the only thing we can do is to keep doing what we can until this nightmare ends.
Sudanese people are watching two men and their international sponsors destroy their country, all whilst getting no support from the outside world. The heartache must be unbearable.
I’m generally angry about many unnecessarily horrible things in the world but few things anger me as much as the human-made humanitarian crisis in
#Tigray
and the world’s (especially the African Union’s), response to it. People are literally dying. Do their lives not matter?
To All Eritreans: For 17 years, our government has used the war with Ethiopia as an excuse for their oppressive rule. Now that war is over, we need to hold them to account. Put pressure, be loud, don't give up - the future of Eritrea is determined by how we act now.
My statement at the United Nations, delivered with the Eritrean regime representative sitting on the same panel, was directed to all individuals and governments who claim to still have hope for the regime. I argued that what they have isn't hope, it is self interest. (1/3)
I don’t understand why many in the Eritrean opposition only have been ridiculing brigade nehamedu (when we know the reasons behind their tactics, lack of strategy and problematic statements) instead of exploring how we can help the first mass-movement of young Eritrean survivors.
To those saying we are politicising the situation in
#Tigray
⬇️
#AllowAccessToTigray
is about the Ethiopian government violating international law. It’s about human lives at risk, Ethiopians and Eritrean refugees alike. It’s about all the children. It’s really not controversial.

Don’t forget that there still is a communications blackout in
#Tigray
. Why would you cut off an entire region’s contact with the outside world? Who benefits from stories, images and videos not being able to be shared?
It was an honour to have been invited by the United Nations to talk about
#Eritrea
today. I talked about how tired so many Eritreans are of feeling helpless and hopeless, but that we never can allow that tiredness to defeat us. It is our patriotic duty to never give up.
#Tigray
is starving. The Ethiopian government has blocked ALL humanitarian aid from entering the region for more than a month. We urgently need to increase the pressure on
@AbiyAhmedAli
to allow humanitarian access.
#AllowAccessToTigray
Tomorrow it has been exactly 3 months since the conflict and humanitarian crisis in
#Tigray
started.
Join the twitter storm putting pressure on
@AbiyAhmedAli

Eritreans are suffering so much in our country and after they are forced to flee, and it's all because of a few individuals who are committed to destroying
#Eritrea
. How can their unnecessary suffering not anger more Eritreans born in the diaspora? Why's their pain not your pain?
We need to actively and loudly push for a
@UNHumanRights
investigation into what happened in
#Axum
and in the Tigray conflict as a whole. The victims, their families and the survivors deserve justice.
My heart is so full from all the love I have received about this so far. I do this work because it is my duty as a privileged diaspora born. I speak up bcs so many Eritreans are silenced in our country and in neighbouring countries, or exhausted from the trauma after they flee.

We need to continuously challenge the Ethiopian government when they claim that adequate humanitarian access has been allowed to

#AllowAccessToTigray
Fuel delivery into
#Tigray
is still restricted with no fuel allowed in more than six months (except for two trucks in Nov). The UN is unable to dispatch and distribute airlifted medical supplies due to lack of fuel.
Oh my god… The humanitarian crisis in
#Tigray
is disastrous and for over a year, have been terrified of how the lack of access to the region, killings of aid workers and comms blackout has weakened the life-saving humanitarian response. And now there will be none at all.
Aid agencies have suspended their work in an area of Ethiopia's
#Tigray
region after a deadly air strike on a camp for people displaced by the brutal war, the UN's emergency response agency said Sunday
Today it’s been exactly 10 years since Ciham Ali was illegally arrested in

We love you Ciham and will never stop fighting for your release 💜

Don’t forget that these abuses STILL ARE HAPPENING. Therefore, protection of communities needs to be key. Tigrayans held in detention sites must be released. Unhindered humanitarian assistance, with a strong protection focus must be allowed to Western

constantly have been at risk of violence or death, but never really knowing (bcs of the comms blackout) how they are doing. I really don’t know how they’ve done it.
It's wild that a war in the 21st century can be conducted in darkness and for massacre after massacre to be revealed so long after they have taken place. Watch and read

I honestly have so much more to say but this is just a response to the hypocritical supporters of a violent regime that now SUDDENLY are against violence. Will make another video responding to anti-gov ppl saying violence isn’t the answer, cause that’s a completely separate issue
Again, for the millionth time, this is illegal under regional and international law. Humanitarian access is non-negotiable.

NO humanitarian supplies (including food, medicine or fuel) have been allowed into

The situation for Eritrean refugees who have fled Khartoum is devastating. They don't even have the most basic supplies and no institutional support. Many talk about the incredible kindness from the Sudanese people in the towns they have fled to which is so beautiful… (contd ⬇️)
We need to be asking ourselves why the Ethiopian government is refusing to allow journalists, human rights orgs & investigations full access to
#Tigray
, why comms have been down in the region.
@berhe_lucy
is a journalist who has been working tirelessly despite these obstacles.
What’s happening in
#Eritrea
is not a question of politics, it's about human suffering that we have the power to end. I therefore urge all Eritreans to rise up and show up for our people. Because if we don’t do it, I assure you, no one else will.
#YIAKL
.....surely this is a joke...? If not, their next step must be to stop killing African refugees at sea, stop funding the torture & killings of African refugees in Libya & stop doing everything in their power to prevent African refugees from exercising their right to seek asylum.
Just to be clear: it doesn’t matter if a government has declared a state of emergency, arbitrary detention is still illegal under international law REGARDLESS of circumstances. Tigrayans in Addis are currently terrified for themselves and their loved ones. This needs to end.
Security forces in the Ethiopian capital, Addis Ababa, have targeted Tigrayans, including children and the elderly, with arbitrary arrests and mass detentions as part of an escalating crackdown.
@amnesty
’s press release:
Not a day passes that I don’t think about Ciham. Can’t believe it’s been 10 years this year since she was kidnapped by the Eritrean government. Without charge, trial - nothing. No one has heard from her since. But she will be free soon, I know it.
I’m just going to cry tomorrow. It’s all just too much. Yes, I’m so proud and we should celebrate AND criticise the situation in
#Eritrea
... But the situation is just too bad right now to celebrate. 30 years of fighting for independence, to then have for 30 years of this hell?
Just a little reminder that there is still no full humanitarian access to
#Tigray
and that the government still has not explained way. We need to keep pressuring
@AbiyAhmedAli

I have never supported any government in Ethiopia or Eritrea. My only concern is the well-being of their people and throughout history, they have all been let down by all leaders. I condemn TPLFs attack in Asmara with the same amount of force I condemned Abiy’s attack in Tigray.
Praying for my people who never seem to get a break from man-made destruction and oppression.
If you are Eritrean, I (as always) urge you to speak up for those who have deliberately been made voiceless and robbed from any influence in the politics affecting them.
I think the strangest, most self-centred group of people I have ever encountered are the ones who not only were silent about the Eritrean refugees suffering worldwide (incl. in
#Tigray
) but even denied that they were refugees… UNTIL *their* enemy was accused of attacking them
“I have a voice, I’m committed to using my voice. Not everyone feels safe. A lot of people are struggling to survive. But if you do have the time and energy to speak up, and you notice injustice - call out that injustice”

THOUSANDS of Tigrayans are still held in life-threatening conditions.
All those arbitrarily detained in Western Tigray should be released & Ethiopian authorities should allow int’l humanitarian agencies access to formal & informal detention sites.
When Tigrayan forces recaptured many parts of

authorities and forces escalated the arbitrary arrests and killings of the remaining Tigrayan residents of Western Tigray. We believe thousands are still held in life-threatening conditions.

My message is going to be simple - this is happening because of the actors deliberate decisions and the crisis will only stop when they decide to allow full and unhindered access.
"Doctors at Tigray’s main hospital are urging the Ethiopian government to allow supplies of insulin to be airlifted into the region, warning that their stocks will run out w/in a week and that patients with type 1 diabetes are 'at serious risk of death.'”
“The main hospital in Ethiopia's war-ravaged region of Tigray has sent home 240 patients after food supplies ran out last week, officials said. The decision underscores how little food aid is reaching the region”

All Eritreans need to commemorate the date 18 September because that was the day, 22 years ago, our free press was shut down, the arrests of the high profile dissidents started and Isaias took full control. It was the day our country forever changed.

How can you be Eritrean and not be constantly angry? How can you think about the disparities between what our martyrs fought for and what currently exists, and not be furious? The Eritrean regime has destroyed Eritrea, and no one can deny that. How are so many people this calm?
The
@amnesty
report is out. According to our findings, the indiscriminate shelling of Axum by Ethiopian and Eritrean troops may amount to war crimes, and that the mass execution of Axum civilians by Eritrean troops may amount to crimes against humanity.
It breaks my heart that Eritreans literally have to leave the country to have any shot at a decent life. It’s such a simple thing but I can’t stop thinking about it. I will never understand how that is considered okay or normal for regime supporters living in the diaspora.
Can’t stop thinking about Ciham who is turning 27 years old today behind bars. Ciham deserves better. All the women and girls imprisoned without trial in
#Eritrea
deserve better. We can never stop speaking about them and never allow ourselves to normalise & accept their reality.
I hate the Eritrean gov for forcing our people to flee. I hate the EU and UK gov for killing them on their desperate pursuit for safety.

We need to talk about how the Ethiopian conflict & potential war is so closely tied to Eritrea & how it will affect Eritreans as well. Here I give some historical context to the conflict, explain how the intl community is complicit & argue why we *really* need to oppose this war.
This is has been going on in different degrees since the day the war started in November 2020. Can’t decide what’s worse - denying there is a blockade or making up excuses for it when they know there is no lawful excuse to blocking humanitarian aid.
#AllowAccessToTigray
Three-month-old Surafeal Mearig now weighs less than when he was born. His mother is too hungry to produce milk and the hospital treating him in Ethiopia's Tigray region has not had any supplies for months.
The government denies there is an aid blockade.
It's time for
@TiffanyHaddish
's support and defence of
#Eritrea
's dictator (a man who has been accused of crimes against humanity by the UN) to be called out. Check out my latest piece for
@BuzzFeedNews
explaining how she has done this and why it matters.
If not even this cruel and disgusting video of a man being burned alive makes people and institutions take a stance against the crimes in this war, then they clearly have no respect for human lives. May the man in the video rest in peace. I hope his family never have to see it.
I don’t understand Eritreans born in the diaspora (especially professionals with connections & sometimes big platforms) who have turned a blind eye to the suffering of Eritrean refugees? Like this shit has been BAD since early 2010s but in 10 years you have felt nothing about it?
For everyone saying we are exaggerating...this is how the UN spokesperson is describing the restricted access to

No more whitewashing: Aid is still NOT reaching civilians in desperate need in Ethiopia’s Tigray.
Hunger and malnutrition reach them faster.
In 40 years a humanitarian, I’ve rarely seen an aid response so impeded. We are failing as an int’l community.
“Those who eat alone, will die alone, is a saying in our Tigrinya language and people follow that. They share what they have with others even if it means they will starve tomorrow. There is so much solidarity to surviving together.”
#AllowAccessToTigray
Despite the comms blackout and restricted access to
#Tigray
and other areas in Northern
#Ethiopia
, there have been plenty of credible evidence produced about the unfolding disaster and shared widely. All leaders and institutions are fully informed. Anyone's inaction is a choice.
UNHCR has literally lost access to the only two remaining refugee camps in Tigray. They are being attacked and are running out of food, clean water. And the ones who managed to flee are speaking up for the ones left behind. But it shouldn’t be on them to do it, it should be on us
I just can't imagine the pain of losing someone as young as Ciham w/o a valid reason. She didn't get sick or get into an accident - she was forcibly disappeared by a government. Today, I'm thinking about her family, her friends and everyone who misses her deeply.

I will never get over how the Ethiopian government has been restricting humanitarian access to
#Tigray
since the very first second the conflict started, how confidently they have been denying it and how little that has been done to pressure them to stop this illegal practice.
NO humanitarian supplies (including food, medicine or fuel) have been allowed into
#Tigray
in 24 days (!!!!!!) because the Ethiopian government is blocking trucks from entering the region. Blocking humanitarian access is a crime. People are dying. Why is there not more outrage?
This can’t be the low, low, low standard we hold a government too. A vast majority of the needed aid is still being blocked after more than a month without any aid allowed in.

@antonioguterres
It’s been more than a year since this I tweeted so why is this caption still relevant? Why is
#Tigray

We need to continuously challenge the Ethiopian government when they claim that adequate humanitarian access has been allowed to

This interview made me furious and I could say a lot, but for now I’m going to keep it short:
