I am the unnamed "college professor" mentioned in the tweet below😆but seriously I had a great convo w/
@NPRCodeSwitch
about
@sanbenito
and my class "Bad Bunny & Resistance in Puerto Rico." Link: Oh and the
@BadBunnyCourse
syllabus project is now live.
🚨🔊NEW EP ALERT! 🔊🚨
What can Bad Bunny tell us about anti-colonial politics in Puerto Rico? In this week's ep, we sit down with a college professor whose new course aims to tackle that very question.
Bad Bunny’s Grammy performance tonight was an incredible exhibition of unapologetically (inclusive) Puerto Rican pride. Caribbean pride. Latine pride. Bomba. Plena. Black. Queer. PUERTO RICAN PRIDE. This is so much more than just “Latin flavor,” as so many are calling it 🇵🇷✊🏽💯❤️
Teaching the course "Bad Bunny and Resistance in Puerto Rico" starting next week! Finalizing my syllabus. Any suggestions for what I must add (academic, popular media, films, etc.)? Also, launching the
@BadBunnyCourse
syllabus project w/ Petra Rivera-Rideau soon!
@sanbenito
Some news: I have *earned* tenure and promotion at

Taught 1st zoom class yesterday for intro to Latinx studies. Student stayed in zoom after to tell me she was Puerto Rican +was so excited to have a PR🇵🇷 teacher for the 1st time. Same feeling I had 1st year at NYU when I took

Last night I took my class “Bad Bunny and Resistance in Puerto Rico” to see
@sanbenito
live and put all of the course material to work. The concert became the classroom. Grateful for
@LoyolaMarymount
’s dedication to innovative, student-centered pedagogy. Unforgettable experience!
If folks couldn’t yet understand how or why he is worthy of study, worthy of being taken seriously as a ground breaking artist, worthy of university courses like mine, tonight’s performance should have clarified things.
This is particularly meaningful considering only 4% of US faculty are Latina. I think I am the only Puerto Rican faculty member at LMU (if there is another🇵🇷, let me know and I will adjust tweet + rejoice accordingly). I was the first Puerto Rican ever hired into my department.

Instead of simply demonizing the paparazzi, we need to hold the larger corporate media + celebrity systems accountable that demand these photographs, and profit endlessly from their circulation. Paparazzi are the easy scapegoats for a much larger issue. I wrote a book about it!

She was both serious and sarcastic. I was the only reporter who talked to her and the other Black women walking the carpet that night. This was not the first time a BIPOC celebrity had referenced the racial imbalance in celebrity reporting in an interview with me.

Yea my annual contribution to the AAAs is usually organizing a panel w/likeminded ambivalent anthros that is some version of wtf is wrong w/anthro and why are we still here. But carving out that critical space never stops feeling important/necessary.

Yes, I do the same. I think it can be useful when we teach it specifically to critique that approach and teach it alongside alternative forms of knowledge and knowledge production. As long as the bottom line emphasized is: it’s white supremacist garbage
They are prob your BIPOC colleagues who you’ve been ignoring for decades, dismissing their work as not theoretical while you now try to make sense of the things they already theorized. For those who do critical race work, addressing what is happening now requires no gymnastics.

Such a long history of this for BIPOC women in and colonized by the US. From 1930s-1970s about 1/3 of Puerto Rican women on the island were forced into sterilization. It’s widely documented, but still not widely known. This is more of the same.
@DrJonathanRosa
I def hope my book helps ppl parse through this farce. Hollywood has always (re)produced racism and inequality. Some of these folks (I’m classy so won’t name names but she played Veronic Mars) have organized to criminalize the 1 Hollywood job that is mostly BIPOC—paparazzi
