For speaking out about political prisoners, our account here on X has been recognized by the so-called "court" in Belarus as "extremist materials." âť—While we take this as recognition that we're doing the right thing, let us warn our followers from Belarus. Image: Mediazona

To escape torture and get out of prison, Palina Sharenda-Panasiuk revealed that she had to sign papers for "cooperation" with Belarusian security forces. This was the only way to save her life. Now, 10 days after release & in exile, she publicly canceled this forced agreement.

Another cruel attempt to isolate political prisoners in Belarus: they are now being cut off from financial support. New “blacklists” ban transfers to many more inmates. For years, letters have barely reached them. Now, even basic survival in prison is getting harder.

It has been 2 years since we last heard from Maksim Znak or Mikalai Statkevich. Since February 9, 2023, they have been kept incommunicado, with no letters, calls, or visits from relatives or lawyers. All because the regime fears them. This is an inhumane practice. It must stop.

Eduard Babaryka faces another trial for "disobedience" in prison. He was jailed for helping his father, Viktar Babaryka, run for president in 2020. It took the regime 3 yrs to fabricate charges. Sentenced to 8 yrs, then 10 – now they’re trying to punish him again for resisting.

Today, activist Yauhen Afnahel spends his birthday behind bars for the 5th year. He is kept in the most restrictive conditions possible in Belarus' penitentiary system. He should be spending this day with his loved ones, not behind bars. Freedom to Yauhen!

In her speech after arriving in Vilnius, Palina said she's worried about Viktoryia Kulsha, another political prisoner who's still behind bars. Viktoryia faces enormous pressure and has severe health issues. Seeing Palina free is a relief. But the fight for all political prisoners is not over.

Siarhei Tsikhanouski, a popular YouTuber, ran for president in Belarus in 2020. He was so popular that the dictatorial regime arrested him almost immediately. Siarhei is now serving almost 20 years in prison. Today marks 700 days since we last heard from him: Siarhei is kept incommunicado because the regime fears him. This must end – Siarhei must be free.

Belarusian journalist Larysa Shchyrakova has been in prison for more than 2 years. Like most political prisoners, she faces pressure. Other inmates are discouraged from talking to her. But Larysa remains strong & keeps hoping for release. Former inmates say she always smiles.

For nearly 4.5 years, @viasna96 volunteer Andrei Chapiuk has been behind bars in Belarus. His "crime"? Defending human rights. In August, he was set to see his parents – but the day before, he was thrown into solitary confinement. Andrei is not a criminal. He must be free!

Today is World Cancer Day. Several political prisoners in Belarus, including Ruslan Slutski 🎥 or Halina Dzerbysh, suffer from cancer. Harsh prison conditions put their lives at risk. Recent pardons give hope that Ruslan & others could be freed soon. The regime must stop prioritizing repression over human lives.

Alena Badziaka, 29, taught English at private schools in Belarus. Now, instead of a classroom, she’s in a courtroom. Alena is on trial – likely over comments on social media. Just for criticism of the dictatorial regime, Alena faces up to 12 years in prison.

A whole family is on trial in Minsk today for participating in protests in 2020. Almost 5 years later, the regime still fears Belarusians who spoke out against the rigged election & police violence. Mikalai (47), Alena (46), and their son Mikita (24) face trial for peaceful protests – their constitutional right. Repression continues.

On this day in 1838, Kastus Kalinouski was born. A leader of the 1863 Uprising against Russian rule, he is celebrated as a national hero by Belarusians, Poles, and Lithuanians. His legacy continues to inspire all of us – particularly the people of Belarus fighting for freedom.

Palina Sharenda-Panasiuk is free! After 4 years in prison, enduring beatings, torture, and severe health issues, she has finally been released. Now, we hope Palina can recover and reunite with her husband and two sons as soon as possible. This is a victory but the fight isn’t over. Advocacy and pressure work, and we must keep going until every political prisoner is free.

Belarusian opposition leader Mikalai Statkevich has been nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize. His commitment and brave struggle for democracy and human rights deserve global recognition. Tragically, Statkevich has been held incommunicado in Belarus for over 700 days, with no contact from him since early 2023. Lukashenka fears leaders like Mikalai but the world remembers them. Thank you, Mr. Auštrevičius @petras_petras!

Eduard helped his father, Viktar Babaryka, run for president in 2020. Their campaign gave hope to so many Belarusians that the dictatorial regime saw them as a threat and jailed them both. Today, Eduard is spending his birthday behind bars for the fifth time. Free Eduard!
