@artillain Good idea, I do have a few saved for design inspiration but now I will actively archive it.

Not a fan of "building in public" culture. You end up creating an average of all loud opinions, burn yourself to mediocrity by pleasing everyone—sacrificing originality. The end result will be made by the people for the people, not by the artist. Feedback is useful if it is objective. It kills if it is subjective. Accept/Ignore either, it will chip away at your conviction. I think a good operating scheme is 95% conviction, 5% feedback. Or may be even 99%. Feedback stands directly in the opposition to artistry in a zero sum balance. More on this:

On retro UIs:

Good point. The only thing with retro UI's is that you have to separate their work in two parts. 1) It was designed in that way because it is good 2) It was designed in that way because of technological constraints. In other words, if the same team had 2025 technology at their disposal, would that still design the same UI? If we can separate out 1) from 2), then we can propagate 1) forward and discard 2) as technology improves.

The downside to extreme focus on measurements is that you can get deluded by false sense of assurance from data, especially in a fuzzily defined domain where cognition is involved. But it is worth noting the imprecision of it all and that insight alone is valuable.

Haha, ISS reminds me of US/Russia wrt to UIs. Cold war era stuff developed by Americans and Russians was also wild—they'd have different philosophies towards UI, mostly independently developed I believe. There are definitely areas where both US and Russian approaches had pros/cons.

@amadeus Hah, it is actually an ILS chart of Chicago Midway airport, just cropped. My point is unrelated to this chart, just using it as an example. But yeah, you can use anything, say Google homepage as an example instead.
