Archaeologist,Universities of Innsbruck and Graz, Philippika Harrassowitz (2018) and Best Publication Award of the Austrian Academy of Sciences (2020) winner
Walking through streets of the Nubian village of Elephantine on a hot sunny day. Some of the houses are still built using mudbricks like in ancient Egypt and the streets are not wider. This street level view is entirely missing in archaeological publications.

I kindly ask the
@archaeologyEAA
to share this since artifacts from the Sudan National Museum will soon appear on the black markets in Europe and could eventually appear in auction houses. This a tragedy and a cultural genocide!
#BREAKING
: Artifacts from Sudan's National Museum, including antiques, statues, and archaeological treasures of significant national, historical, and material worth, are now available for sale.

This is not true. I lived in Münster, Germany from 2012 to 2017 where I did my PhD
@uni_muenster
. The Ausländerbehörde there was infested with rude racists and every time I went there I had to deal with all sorts of humiliations.
If someone told me that after a stellar career start in archaeology I would consider switching to management I would not have believed :)I learned that success in academia is not based on merit but on everything else.Still I will continue to research write and publish :) 💫

If archaeology departments are to be saved, archaeology has to be socially relevant. Unfortunately most of archaeological research does not deal with issues of our society or with topics of help to our society.

When they tell you that you should demonstrate research mobility to secure permanent employment they are lying 🤥
I lived in 3 countries, worked as an archaeologist in 5, had Post Docs and stand alone projects in 2. It’s not the merit!
Arrived to Egypt to finish studying the Early Dynastic to later Old Kingdom pottery from Kom Ombo and start studying some 400 complete late First Intermediate Period vessels from a silo room 🎉

I used to work here on the rescue excavations of the Swiss Institute from 2013 to 2017. I did not manage to visit since my last season and it was so emotional to come back today, see the excavation house and enjoy the beautiful views of Aswan landscape.

Egyptology:
1.A discipline in which development is understood as a discovery of yet another tomb or text rather than an explanation of any past phenomenon.
2.A discipline which glorifies persons and “their” sites rather than collective nature of knowledge production.

You are absolutely right!I finished PhD in 4 years,got 2 prizes for it,had 2 stand alone PostDoc projects, published 3 monographs, 3 edited volumes and over 60 peer reviewed papers.I have 11 years of fieldwork ex, I taught at 3 unis and lived in 3 countries!On01.09.23 unemployed
Following the event today I decided to share a recent experience.A colleague and I are working on a special issue of an archaeological journal which will deal with de- and postcolonial thinking in Egyptology. 1 Egyptian and 1 European colleague dropped out of fear (1/2)
When one of the most prominent researchers in history of sexuality and an world renowned Egyptologist has to quit doing research on this topic due to university politics and homophobia, all 🚨 alarms should be on!!!

I am especially glad that Egyptologists in Vienna had the opportunity to see how inequality is studied informed by social theory, a great lack in Austria.
A reminder that gender is intersectional, that Ancient Egypt was a patriarchal culture and that not all Egyptian women were members of the social elite, queens or female Pharaohs. Power is relational, gender is relational.

My first article in French is coming out soon in Egypte, Afrique et Orient :) My goal is to one day reach that level so that I can read Foucault in original!
@Jairo_I_Funez
Just because Fanon wrote it does not mean it’s correct or justifiable. Colonialism is violent, liberation is violent, but fostering violence creates a never ending loop of hatred and murder. No to war!
This amazing book on execration rituals reached my mail box today!Those interested should read Espinel’s and my paper parallel.We both argue the same thing reaching our conclusions independently and on different material, in his case iconography and texts, in my case archaeology.

They fear that by speaking up and providing a critical analysis they will loose all chances of employment.This is how the establishment works. Censorship and dismissal of arguments without providing contra-arguments.Luckily there are many of us who do not fear and think freely.
